It is a common sight this time of year---Amazon delivering packages, but this time it's some of Baltimore's 4,000 employees of the company helping it deliver 2,000 so-called "boxes of smiles" to those who need them the most in the city."This includes toys, gifts, items of personal care and so and so forth," said Amazon Operations Director Preet Virdi as workers brought the gifts into the City Hall Rotunda. The need for such essentials became evident earlier this year when the city attempted to put a number on its disenfranchised citizens."We have approximately 2500 men, women and children who were experiencing an episode of homelessness at that time," said City Homeless Services Director Jerrianne Anthony. For those who have experienced life without a roof over their head, the boxes of smiles represent far more than a collection of gifts and essentials."Amazing. Amazon. The gifts. We need them. We need the Mayor's Office of Human Services, because without them, we have no hope," Sakina Ilyas told the crowd. But once she stepped out of the spotlight of this staged event, Ilyas opened up about her own experience with her family's past homelessness."It was very, very stressful especially during the holidays. No family. Nowhere to go,” said Ilyas. “The problem here in Baltimore City is lack of housing. Lack of affordable housing. There are over 17,000 abandoned houses that are just sitting there."In the meantime, just 10 days from now, on December 20, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City will no longer accept applications for public housing, citing a waiting list of 14,000 that averages seven years to deliver. While the unexpected gifts, along with a check for ,000 are appreciated, Ilyas is left pondering the obvious."More is needed, because when this is gone, the stage is set, the curtain is open, but what happens when it's over?"The city did adopt a three-year action plan on homelessness earlier this year with the goal of combining action, results and concrete steps to address the problem. 2036

It’s been more than four months since Elana Mugdan used her smartphone. Mugdan was the winner of Vitamin Water’s contest that asked participants to go smartphone free for a year for 0,000. When she found out she was selected, Mugdan was thrilled, stating, “I would love to get rid of my phone for a year and reclaim my life.”While most of us wouldn’t ditch the smartphone for an entire year, Mugdan was up for the challenge. She wasn’t completely tech-free, though. Mugdan was allowed to use a computer and a 10-year-old flip phone in case of an emergency. She says the hardest part has been navigating her way around new areas. Mugdan is an author, and she’s currently on a book tour. Her solution? “I go on Google Maps [and] print out directions,” she says.Despite some frustration, going without a phone has given her clarity and she encourages others to cut back.Mugdan recommends first limiting your screen time. Don’t check it first thing in the morning, and do not look at right before you go to bed. Even if you cut back an hour a two a day, Mugdan says, you will see and feel a difference. 1112

Lawmakers have agreed to ban the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21 and repeal three health care taxes designed to help pay for the Affordable Care Act as part of the sweeping year-end spending agreement, according to multiple people involved in the talks. The restriction on tobacco sales has long been a push by a somewhat odd compilation of members, ranging from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a Kentucky Republican, and Republican Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Todd Young of Indiana, and some of the chamber's top Democrats, including Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois, Tim Kaine of Virginia and Brian Schatz of Hawaii. Those lawmakers have been looking for a means to get the prohibition across the finish line, and now they've found one by attaching it to a must-pass series of bills to avoid a government shutdown. The final version of the bill is expected to be released later on Monday, and the increased age restriction for tobacco purchases is one of several provisions outside the spending measures themselves that will be attached to the broader .4 trillion spending agreement and likely become federal law.The medical device tax, health insurance tax and "Cadillac" tax on employer plans -- all of which have faced bipartisan opposition on Capitol Hill and have been targeted by health care industry lobbyists for years -- would also be repealed in the agreement, the people said. Their opponents on Capitol Hill have been looking for a popular bill that they can be attached to, and this spending package is the last train leaving the station in 2019.Negotiators have also agreed to extend the Export-Import Bank for an additional seven years and provide financing to shore up miner pensions that are at risk of running out of money, the people said. The spending bill also includes million for gun research at the Centers for Disease Control and PRevention and the National Institutes of Health, which has long been a Democratic push. It maintains the 2009

INDIANAPOLIS — As he prepares for his seventh round of chemotherapy to treat leukemia, Pastor Arvery J. Bush is looking for a match.Pastor Bush, who was diagnosed in July, is preparing to undergo his seventh round of chemotherapy."In my life, I have to walk by faith and not by sight," Pastor Bush said. That used to be the church motto at Christian Faith Missionary Baptist Church, but now those words have taken on a life of their own for Pastor Bush."If I go by what I see, I would have given up a long time ago. I would have thrown in the towel," Pastor Bush said.Pastor Bush's life has been a journey of twists and turns ever since he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia five months ago."They told me I had a chromosome called Philadelphia Chromosome," he said. "One out of five have it, I just happened to be one of those ones."Due to the genetic abnormality, there's a chance the cancer will keep coming back without a bone marrow transplant. Friendship Missionary Baptist Church will hold a bone marrow registry drive from 2-5 p.m. Sunday. People can also register online by going to use page on 1127
