SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego lawmakers responded Friday to President Donald Trump’s comments about border wall construction and funding as the government shutdown stretched into day 13. Trump declared he could keep parts of the government closed for "months or even years" as he and Democratic leaders failed in a second closed-door meeting to resolve his demand for billions of dollars for a border wall with Mexico. “We did a lot of wall in San Diego,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “They wanted it very badly.” Trump cited concerns about the U.S.-Mexico border, including entry by terrorists, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. San Diego County’s congressional representatives emailed comments to 10News regarding the president’s statements. “San Diegans view our proximity to Mexico as an opportunity, not a threat, and we recently celebrated building a bridge between our two countries – not a wall – a bridge with adequate customs staffing so people can travel back and forth easily, and legally,” wrote Rep. Scott Peters. “San Diegans want smart, innovative border security – not the wasteful wall that President Trump wants to build as a monument to himself.” Congressman Duncan Hunter, San Diego County’s lone Republican representative, issued a statement through his public information officer. “Congressman Hunter believes President Trump needs to stand strong on the issue of border security and his description of it as a ‘national emergency’ means he has a firm grasp of its importance. A border barrier is absolutely necessary, some of which is already in existence which many in Congress initially supported. What the President is asking for in terms of funding is not unreasonable and holding Congress accountable is exactly what he was elected to do.” 10News is awaiting responses from Rep. Juan Vargas, whose district includes the South Bay, and Rep. Susan Davis. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue unveiled two new tools Wednesday that will help their dive team be faster and more efficient. "They move about 5 times faster than a diver can swim," Sergeant Rob Brown, with the SDFD Dive Team, said. The first hour during a search is crucial, he added. It could mean the difference between life or death. According to the website, DiveX, the scooters can go up to 600 feet underwater and can drive about 3 miles-per-hour. "It reduces our air consumption, allows us to stay under longer, as well as reduce diver fatigue, so we can get more reps in while we're conducting searches," Brown said. The team's had scooters since the 1990's but the new Piranhas are three generations ahead of what the team's been using, according to Brown. The need became apparent in August of 2018, when a 12-year-old girl fell off a boat in the San Vicente Reservoir. Her body was found days later. The team's request was answered by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Foundation. They donated two scooters to the team, costing about ,000 each."We cannot say enough how grateful we are for the support of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Foundation in getting this equipment to us," Brown said. The foundation is accepting donations to afford four more scooters here.Brown said the scooters are lightweight and they can buy the batteries at Home Depot, saying they're the same as those power tools use. 1415

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has been battered by storms this winter, showering the county for a bright and beautiful spring. But with that comes the possibility of more little creatures living off all that glorious foliage. So can San Diegans expect more mosquitoes buzzing around this season? Simple answer: Maybe. While it's possible the county could see more mosquitoes in the spring, more rain doesn't guarantee it, Jessica Northrup, from the county's Land Use and Environment Group, says.RELATED: Swarms of Painted Lady butterflies spotted in North County"... When it comes to mosquitoes, you have to wait and see if more rain equals more bugs. That is because increased rainfall can create more—or fewer—places for mosquitoes to lay eggs and breed. Places where water may have been stagnant could be flowing and mosquitoes don’t breed in flowing water," Northrup said. That's why the county urges residents to dump out standing water that may have collected due to recent rains. That message was amplified Friday, as the county reported the first sign of summer as a dead hawk in Lakeside tested positive for West Nile virus. While officials said the infection appeared to be an old one, it served as a reminder that the virus is established in the county.RELATED: Sunshine and warmth return to San Diego this weekendBringing the message back to the start: While more water doesn't equal more mosquitoes, residents are cautioned to take action where they can."On the other hand, places that otherwise would not be holding water in dry years could be holding water now," Northrup said. "It is important that residents dump out standing water that has collected during the rain to prevent mosquito breeding."Chris Conlan, supervising vector ecologist with the County of San Diego, says the same rains that have led to a recent boom in butterflies around the county could not only mean more mosquitoes, but also gnats, ticks, beetles, and "mosquito hawks," which are not mosquitoes but look strikingly similar.RELATED: California drought free for the first time since 2011" ...You have have to shift your strategy and adapt to where the mosquitoes are growing," Conlan said in a release. "Things are going to get a bit more buggy as we get into the spring."Residents can learn more about how to prevent mosquito breeding, report issues, and how to protect themselves on the county's "Fight the Bite!" website. 2425
