The report found that companies were often pressuring consumers into deals that were too good to be true."No deal is too good to pass up,” says Grant. “If the deal is good today, it's going to be good tomorrow."There are ways you can protect yourself. Grant says it's best to do your research; never sign anything on the spot. Also, avoid digital contracts that require you to sign on a phone or tab. You should ask for a copy of what you are signing."You want to shop around and see what the costs are of other companies and compare their reputations as well," suggests Grant.Checking the company’s reviews on the Better Business Bureau is a good place to start when choosing the right company.  1749

There's a new program aimed at helping Black and Latinx students succeed.The Equity in Education Initiative was built through a partnership between Walmart and North Carolina A&T State University.The program acknowledges many of these students start at a disadvantage, because they go through under-funded school districts.“These students are coming in sometimes with academic gaps that are due to no fault of their own. It's not a difference in ability, it's just a difference in their zip code,” said Kevin James, Dean of the Deese College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T.The program is broken up into four focus areas, addressing specific needs of different students. They include financial resources and mentorship while in school, and then network building to create career opportunities their white counterparts may already have.“So many people actually obtain their jobs through networks, because they know someone who knows someone, and many of these students, most of them come in without those built in networks and their families don't have those networks,” said James.The hope is that the positive effects of the program will extend outside of school, allowing successful students to invest and give back.“It's not just about the impact on the student. It's about multi-generational impact on families and about extending those impacts into communities that often times have been under resourced,” said James.Some parts of the program, like the Black Male Initiative, will make resources automatically available to students.There will be an application process for the Leadership Cohort and scholarships.The program starts early next year. 1683

This year, more than half of all U.S. states have had confirmed or possible cases of acute flaccid myelitis, the polio-like illness that can cause paralysis and mostly affects children, according to an exclusive CNN analysis.CNN reached out to health departments in every state; 48 states responded, plus the District of Columbia. Of those, 30 states said they had cases that were confirmed, suspected or being investigated -- including 15 states that said they had confirmed cases in 2018.In total, CNN found 47 confirmed cases and 49 more that were suspected or being investigated, for a total of 96.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which releases only confirmed numbers, says 16 states had 38 cases as of September 30. There's a new concept to contraception, and you may start seeing more advertising for it soon.It's an app, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just gave it the green light to start marketing.Natural Cycles claims to help prevent pregnancy by allowing women to track the days they are most fertile. It uses a woman's monthly cycle information and their body temperature, which users input daily.The app provides a calendar of green and red days. Green days indicate you're not fertile, while red days suggest you are.The app claims its’s 93 percent effective if used correctly. That estimate may be high though.Planned Parenthood, in general, claims fertility awareness is only between 76 and 88 percent effective.Regardless, the app does nothing to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.   The president of Advocates for Youth, a national organization that promotes young people’s rights to sexual health information, says there are some concerns surrounding the app.“Especially for many younger women, their cycle isn’t exactly regular, so if you've got an irregular cycle or you really don’t understand the implications of using fertility awareness, it’s a tough method to use,” explains Deb Hauser. “It’s not by any means foolproof.”The Natural Cycles app costs for a year or a month.The free trial offer isn't really going to help you, because it takes a few months for the app to get to know your body. 1445
