ZHENGZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a bridge collapse last Saturday in central China's Henan Province has risen to 37 with 29 still missing, rescue headquarters said at Tuesday midnight.Among the killed people were three tourists. The headquarters counted retrieved bodies and asked family by family about missing people to get the numbers, which may rise as witnesses say they saw about 100 people on the bridge when it collapsed.China Central Television (CCTV) reported Tuesday night that at least 50 people died in the collapse without giving the source. The Yi River Bridge collapsed at about 5 p.m. Saturday in Luanchuan County, Luoyang City, plunging the people on it into the rushing waters, a local government spokesman said.Thousands of rescuers are still searching for missing people and possible survivors.Villagers from seven villages and soldiers have launched a massive search for survivors, said Li Guangming, deputy head of the administrative office of Luanchuan county government. The rescuers are focusing on spots that could hold people who were rushed away by torrents, such as banks with lush plants, said Qi Weiming, deputy head of Luanchuan's military office.News broke of the accident after Luanchuan's government wrote an apology which was published in Monday's Luoyang Daily, saying "we are deeply sorry for the heavy loss of life ... and we take responsibility.""The bridge was crowded with people who had come to watch flood torrents when it collapsed. They were villagers and tourists from a nearby nursing home," said survivor Li Xianghong in an interview with local media Dahe Daily."More than 10 people fell with me, including my nephew, at the southern end of the bridge which collapsed first. For a moment, the river was full of struggling people."Li was caught by a tree branch and rescued by other villagers.Witnesses say the two ends of the bridge collapsed first. And the whole bridge fell in about one or two minutes, most people on it did not manage to escape. The bridge, built in December 1987, was over 200 meters long and more than 10 meters high. It was the only bridge on a about 4-km section of the river. An initial probe shows the dilapidated bridge collapsed after fallen tree trunks became stuck under it, blocking the passage of the raging flood waters, Luoyang officials said.Officials said they were continuing the investigation and vowed to severely punish those who were to blame. The flood has damaged a local tap water plant, cutting drinking water supply to the county's residents. Transport to the county was also disrupted by the flood with some bridges and roads damaged.

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April. The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said. The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said. The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China provided 56,000 hectares of land for residential use in the first six months of 2010, up 135 percent over the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Land and Resources.A significant increase in the availability of land for housing was reported in areas like Guizhou Province, Beijing, Jiangxi Province, Heilongjiang Province and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, said a statement on the ministry's website. The land and resources management departments at various levels have been working hard to ensure land supplies, especially for indemnificatory housing, shantytown relocation housing, public rental housing and middle-sized and small apartments, the statement said. The departments will work hard to ensure land supplies for public residential purposes, it added.China implemented a series of measures to rein in soaring home prices and curb property market speculation in April. The measures included tighter scrutiny of applications for financing, limiting of loans for third-home purchases and higher down payment for buying second-homes.Latest data indicated the red-hot property market has started cooling as average housing prices in 70 major cities fell 0.1 percent in June from May.

KHARTOUM, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Special Envoy to Darfur Liu Guijin on Sunday urged the parties of the Darfur conflict to work to find a peaceful solution for the conflict through the Doha negotiating forum."The only way to resolve the problem in Darfur is through peaceful negotiations, through the political process, any boycotting of the political process, any choice of remaining outside the political process is not acceptable, is not conducive to peace and to the resolution of the problem," Liu Guijin told reporters after meeting with Ghazi Salahuddin, Sudan government official in charge of the Darfur file, Sunday in Khartoum. The Chinese official stressed China's support to Doha peace talks, saying that "we have been consistent in supporting the political process in Doha. All parties should get on board."He further urged the international community to support Sudan to find a peaceful settlement to the Darfur issue, saying that "it is time for the international community to work closely together with the government of Sudan, with all the relevant stakeholders, to have a peaceful resolution."Liu, meanwhile, reiterated China's supportive stance for peace in Sudan, in both its north and south, saying that "we will continue to be the development partner of Sudan, all of Sudan, not only in the north, but also including the south. We are ready to work with all the stakeholders to peace, not only in Darfur, but also to the southern Sudan issue."The Chinese official said his visit to Sudan tended to exchange ideas with the Sudanese authorities and discuss the future strategies regarding south Sudan referendum.
