SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wherever you may go this Halloween, it's unlikely you'll see cuter Halloween costumes than those adorning newborns at the Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health.Babies in the center's neonatal intensive care unit were dressed for the holiday as a way to spread smiles and give parents a memorable Halloween with their newborns.Giovanni Desantiago (hedgehog), Anthony Julian Caballero (Batman), Aniyah & Aaliyah Ortiz (monkeys), Max Waterhouse (C3PO), and Alizae D’Gracia (cat) were among those dressed up as part of the celebration.The NICU at Jacobs Medical Center provides care for newborns born prematurely, at times, some weighing less than a pound or with health issues that require hospitalization. Infants in the NICU who were born even a few weeks too soon can face health challenges. 829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new technology just reached San Diego and Border Patrol agents say it’s going to help them do their jobs faster, easier and more efficiently. They’re called Mobile Video Surveillance Systems. Each unit is grounded to a Ford F150, the controls to operate the cameras mounted on a mast in the bed of the truck are inside. San Diego is the second place in the nation to have truck like these. Border Patrol says they’ll be rolling out in just a couple days. The first place to have Mobile Video Surveillance System trucks is Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Michael Scappechio is a supervisory with Border Patrol and he tells 10 News, “the looming threat of the migrant caravan in Tijuana and more people potentially on the way we need to make sure we’re prepared for that”. The two cameras allow the agents to see two pictures at all times, a daytime camera and an infrared camera. While Scappechio says the need for this kind of technology is needed in San Diego, it’s their increased rate of arrests that landed the trucks here, “nearly a 90 percent increase is significant, that’s going to get attention, that’s going to get resources, that’s going to get man power, infrastructure and technology”.Border Patrol tells 10 News these trucks won’t replace the border wall but instead, will go hand in hand with it. 1334

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego students had mixed feelings regarding their university's involvement in a national scandal. The complaint states Robert Flaxman paid 0,000 to get his son in the "side door" "through [the USD varsity coach] and [USD varsity sport]".Most students said they didn't know his son, an Industrial Systems Engineer Major. They did have opinions on the act itself.Former soccer athlete Lexi Phillips, who is a Sophomore, said it was like a slap in the face, "colleges, when you're applying, definitely ask if you're an athlete or not because they recognize how much work it is and so people who haven't been doing that and saying 'oh well I've been doing that' just to get into an elite school definitely isn't fair and isn't fair for someone who's been trying even harder to get in and they take their spot."Other students like Missica Derhalli, who is a Freshman, say it makes them sick, "I really can't believe that we would be doing something like that. I picked this college particularly because I felt like it was a good, holistic place for me to be and I was going to be getting a truly good education.""Just knowing that there are people who aren't putting in effort and I spent 13 years of my education just working so hard and these people aren't working at all and it's just it's very disheartening," Missica added. She volunteered more than 1,000 hours helping special needs children and has a merit scholarship.On the other side of the spectrum, some students weren't surprised at all. "This is basically like a smaller version of my high school and I saw this stuff like this happening there so this is all somewhat normal for me as bad as that sounds," Sophomore Jacob Asher said. When 10News asked the university who the varsity coach involved in the scandal was, they said they couldn't tell us, and that they're being as transparent as they can be.They sent this statement out yesterday:"The University of San Diego has been cooperating with the United States Department of Justice’s investigation involving an alleged criminal conspiracy to facilitate cheating on college entrance exams and admission into colleges and universities.We have no reason to believe that any members of our admissions team, our administration or staff, or our current coaching staff were aware of or involved in the alleged wrongdoing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego police officers responding to a call for a shoplifter in Ocean Beach ended up buying the suspect clothes and shoes instead of arresting him.It happened on Jan. 6 around 5 a.m. at the location on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. SDPD officers Christian Nimmons and Dominic Collins said employees at the drugstore reported that a homeless man had come in, stolen a sweatshirt and refused to leave.The store declined to press charges but wanted the man out of the store.But knowing it was very cold outside, and seeing the man also didn't have a shirt or socks and shoes, the officers decided to buy them for him."We looked at each other, asked how much the sweatshirt was going to cost, and had the same mutual decision of giving him the sweatshirt," said Collins.Both men told 10News it was simply the right thing to do and part of their job as officers to show compassion for those they come in contact with."I think he was more shocked that cops were doing something for him," Nimmons said. "We couldn't leave him like that. That was really it. It's what we joined to do. To help people."The man, only known to the officers as Daniel, reportedly put on the items and left. 1201
