BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Seven of the 20 top selling American prescription drugs will lose their patents by the end of next year, making way for less expensive generic versions, according to media reports.It's a shift that could save consumers billions of dollars -- assuming those big-ticket medications are willing to give up a trusted brand name for an off-label replacement.The prices of medications such as cholesterol-fighting Lipitor and blood thinner Plavix are expected to go down significantly, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Lipitor will lose its patent in November. When that patent expires, people are advised to buy atorvastatin, the generic equivalent. Other brand names include the anti-psychotic Zyprexa and the rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis drug Enbrel, of which the patent will expire in October and October of next year, respectively.Over the next 10 years, an estimated 120 more brand-name prescription drugs will lose their patents in the U.S.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Google and the British Library announced Monday that the Internet search giant will digitize 250,000 out-of-copyright books from the library's collections, making up to 40 million pages from 1700 to 1870 available to the public online.In a joint statement, the British Library and Google said they will work in partnership over the coming years to deliver the content free through Google Books and the library's website, and full text search, download and reading will be available. Google will cover all digitization costs.The project is going to cover a huge range of printed books, pamphlets and periodicals dated 1700 to 1870, a period of political and technological turmoil, from the Industrial Revolution to the French Revolution, from the introduction of the income tax in Britain and the invention of the telegraph and railway.It will include material in a variety of major European languages and will focus on books that are not yet freely available in digital form online, said the statement.Since December 2004, Google has announced partnership with some 40 high-profile university and public libraries, planning to digitize and make available some 15 million volumes within a decade through Google Books service.The project has triggered controversy as publisher and author associations oppose the plan to put copyrighted titles online in a class action lawsuit.

STOCKHOLM, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Meat diet, a dietary habit popular in some developed countries, can produce more greenhouse gas and thus is likely to actually cause more impact on climate, said a Swedish study published Tuesday.According to Swedish Radio's Ekot news program, the meat diet, also known as Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) diet, doubled the greenhouse gas emission compared with the balanced diet recommended by the Swedish Food Administration.Many Swedish people have abandoned the diet habit of eating root vegetables and fruits, and switched to LCHF diets. The LCHF diet has more meat, fat and unusual greenhouse gas emission. But these root vegetables, such as potatoes and carrots, and other naturally grown vegetables can be planted with less greenhouse gas emission.The report also revealed that many of the LCHF diet advices are actually given by the researchers sponsored by meat industry.

WASHINGTON, May 30 (Xinhua) -- After nearly 12 days together in orbit, U.S. space shuttle Endeavour undocked from the International Space Station on Sunday night, NASA announced on Monday.According to NASA, the undocking took place at 11:55 p.m. EDT ( 0355 GMT Monday) as the spacecraft sailed 215 miles (346 km) above Bolivia.Pilot Greg Johnson, at the aft flight deck controls, flew Endeavour in a circle around the station at distances of about 450 to 650 feet. SAN FRANCISCO, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Apple Inc. plans to introduce a new iPhone in September featuring faster chip and more advanced camera, U.S. media reported on Wednesday.The new iPhone model, which will closely resemble iPhone 4, will include the A5 processor, a more powerful chip that Apple added to the iPad 2 tablet computer earlier this year, along with an 8-megapixel camera, up from the 5-megapixel model in the iPhone 4, Bloomberg quoted two people familiar with the product as saying.The device will run the iOS 5 operating system Apple previewed at its annual developer conference earlier this month.Aiming at attracting customers in developing countries, Apple is also working to finish a cheaper version of the iPhone which will use chips and displays of similar quality to the current iPhone 4, said the sources.Meanwhile, it was reported that Apple is also testing a new version of the iPad with a higher resolution screen, which, similar to the one currently used on iPhone 4, will be about one- third higher than iPad 2 and feature a more responsive touchscreen.According to a recent projection on smartphone market by the International Data Corp.
