CLARENCE STRAIT, Alaska -- A deer is back on dry land, thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska.A crew was patrolling the Clarence Strait, off Alaska’s southern coast, when they spotted a deer in the water.The animal was caught in a current and struggling in the 49 degree water.The Coast Guard crew slowed their boat and got close enough the deer could swim up to them. They pulled the animal onboard and brought it back to dry land to be released. 457

COVID is wreaking havoc in the Southeastern Conference.On Wednesday, the conference announced that they postponed the No. 12 Georgia Bulldogs vs. Missouri Tigers football game due to a COVID outbreak within the Tigers football program.With Missouri already playing Dec. 12, the conference pushed back the Georgia and Missouri's game to Dec. 19, the conference said in a press release.This is the fourth game the conference has had to postpone this week."While it is unfortunate to have multiple postponements in the same week, we began the season with the understanding interruptions to the schedule were possible and we have remained focused throughout the season on the health of everyone around our programs," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in the news release. (KGTV)— More than three business owners in Coronado have been hit by criminals using fake 0 bills to make small purchases.Sam Frederick’s shop, Little Sam’s Island and Beach Fun on Coronado Island has all things fun. But last Saturday, fun was not on his mind, after somebody took advantage of his new employee.A man tried to buy three towels with a 0 bill. But at the last minute, he changed his mind to buy just one.“He realized that my guy was going to cash the 0 bill, so he puts two towels back, and he got more money that way,” Frederick said. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe clerk took the bill, gave the man in change, and left. When Frederick checked the cash register that night, he said something was not right. “I knew right there… The Ben Franklin wasn’t in shape at all,” he said. Coronado police say he is not alone. Investigators are looking into at least three more counterfeit 0 bill incidents in the last week. Joshua Jordan owns Treasures from the Heart, next door. He too was hit. Then he pulled out a 0 the last minute, very apologetic, saying “can you break 0?” Jordan said. They did. But the incident happened not once, but twice. “He saw that it was an easy mark, went to the next store, came back again, and bought a little more to look better,” Jordan said. He did not use the change he got from the first transaction but paid with another fake 0 bill with the same serial number. The bill was immediately rejected by the bank the next day.“I know maybe to some companies, 0 is not much. But to me it really hurts,” Jordan said. As Coronado Police continues their investigation, they are also encouraging business owners to check each bill with a pen and a black light machine, ask for ID, or call them if they are suspicious. “Right now we are working in cooperation with the secret service to see if this is an isolated incident in Coronado, or part of a larger trend in San Diego as a whole,” Det. Congress has been unable to agree on a new stimulus package, and now, a key feature of the last package--the 0 enhanced unemployment benefit--has lapsed.“We definitely anticipate significant increases in the number of families and individuals that will begin to rely on emergency food programs more heavily as a result of the loss of this 0 additional benefit,” said Zanita Tisdale, who works with the Food Bank for New York City.The Food Bank for New York City has provided more than 30 million meals from March to April, just in New York. With many on unemployment losing almost two-thirds of their income now, there will be an even greater need in the city and beyond.“Our network of over 1,000 emergency food providers across 90 percent of the zip codes here in the city are really bracing themselves and making sure they are already bringing in enough resources,” Tisdale added.A study done by Feeding America shows 1 in 6 Americans could now struggle with hunger as a result of the financial hardships caused by the pandemic. That is 54 million Americans, 17 million more people since the start of the pandemic.“About 30 to 40 percent of estimated clients that are coming to food banks have never called a food bank before for help,” said Zuani Villarreal with Feeding America.“The deeper we get into this economic crisis and also taking into consideration that Congress is essentially late in passing new legislation, the more significant our economic challenges are going to be as a nation,” said Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst with Bankrate.com.Hamrick warns if Congress doesn’t act fast to end the lapse of enhanced benefits, not only will more people go hungry, but our economy will take a more troubling hit.“The deeper we get into this lack of action on the part of elected officials, the more it exacerbates the level of uncertainty that we have,’ said Hamrick. “I do believe, and I hope I am not overly optimistic, that both sides will come together.”Currently, the House’s idea for a second package, the HEROES Act, was passed in May. However, it has been mostly ignored by the Senate. It’s a trillion plan that proposed extending the 0 benefit in full. Within the past week, Senate Republicans have revealed their own plan, the HEALS Act. It’s a trillion plan that reduces the former 0 a week enhanced benefit to 0.Since any plan has to pass in both the Senate and House, it’s unclear when an actual stimulus plan will be seen. Until then, food banks around the country are bracing for many more Americans to need their help.“Of course, we want our elected officials to do the right thing, but we are going to be here ready and waiting with no barriers to services, no questions asked,” said Tisdale. “This is a judgment-free zone.
