BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, China's top political advisor, urged the municipality of Beijing to intensify efforts to promote the development of service and manufacturing industries.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks during his inspection tour in Beijing from Wednesday to Friday.During the tour, Jia visited factories, construction sites and communities to exchange views with officials and civilians. LOS ANGELES, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Air pollution poses a threat to the health of about 154 million Americans -- or more than half of the U.S. population, the American Lung Association (ALA) said on Wednesday.The air is so polluted in some areas that it is often dangerous to breathe, the ALA said in its annual report on air quality across the United States.About 48 percent of U.S. residents live in counties where smog (ozone) is too high, 20 percent live in areas where there are too many short-term spikes in pollution and six percent live in areas with harmful year-round soot (particle pollution), said the report.About 17 million Americans live in areas afflicted by all three air pollution hazards, the report noted.The report listed California as the most polluted state, where people are breathing some of the worst air.Compared with other states, California has more polluted places, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Riverside, Bakersfield and Fresno, the report said.Honolulu in Hawaii and Santa Fe-Espanola in New Mexico are the only two cities in the nation that had no days in which smog and soot levels reached unhealthy ranges, making them the cleanest cities in the nation, said the report.Research suggests air pollution threatens human health -- and not just the lungs.Small particles of pollution can lodge deep in the lungs, triggering an inflammatory process that, over time, can spread elsewhere in the body and damage blood vessels and the heart, according to Dr. Norman Edelman, the ALA's chief medical officer.On days in which smog levels spike, there's an increase in hospital admissions for respiratory illnesses, heart attacks and stroke in the two or three days following it, said Michael Jerrett, a professor of environmental health sciences at University of California, Berkeley's School of Public Health.In addition to posing both long-term and short-term risks, pollution can also contribute to low birth weights, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke and, ultimately, shorter life spans, he warned.

HARBIN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A therapeutic apparatus to treat Parkinson's disease has been developed in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, according to the provincial science and technology department. It is a worldwide breakthrough in treating the disease with transcranial magnetic stimulation, concluded an expert panel with the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology.The team said it came to the conclusion after evaluating technical documents and clinical test results Monday.This is the first time that transcranial magnetic stimulation has been adopted to treat Parkinson's disease, said Sun Zuodong, chairman of Aobo Medicine Apparatus Co., Ltd. (AMA), the developer based in the provincial capital Harbin.Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a noninvasive method which causes depolarization in the brains' neurons so as to restore the functions of brain nerves.The apparatus consists of three parts, namely brain wave stimulator, field effect cap and multiplier, said Sun.Clinical tests over more than 100 patients showed that the apparatus had a 70 percent success rate in reducing the disease's symptoms, according to Wang Aili, planning manager of AMA.The new equipment will help generation of dopamine, the reduction of which within the brain caused the disease, said Wang Weixiang, a consulting doctor with the Heilongjiang Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital.Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the neural system, which leads to limb tremors and difficulty in walking and other movements.China has 2 million patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, mostly people over the age of 50, and the number is increasing by 100,000 annually, said Dr. Wang.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 8 (Xinhua) -- YouTube on Friday launched YouTube Live, a homepage for live content on the site and a new live-streaming platform.As part of the service, the world's largest video-sharing website introduced a new browse page, www.youtube.com/live, where users can view live events and add upcoming events to their calendars.YouTube said it would gradually roll out a live streaming beta platform, which will allow certain YouTube partners with accounts to stream live content on the website.The new service will "integrate live streaming capabilities and discovery tools directly into the YouTube platform for the first time," YouTube said in a blog post.U.S. media recently reported that YouTube is planning a major overhaul and is negotiating with Hollywood and music producers for materials to offer on a lineup of new channels, with the aim to compete with broadcast and cable television.
