SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Ocean Beach could be getting a new Target, but only if the big box store figures out a way to get around a decades-old parking issue with the city. News of a possible Target Express store moving into the old Antique Center building had some residents like Zeb Ryan shaking his head. “Why do we need more corporate businesses here?” Ryan said. He pointed at the nearby CVS, saying everything he would get at a new Target Express is already around the corner. Other residents agreed, saying it’s a battle of the C’s — comfort vs. convenience.“I don’t know if you’re getting any comfort from a Target,” OB resident, Drew Sibley said. “You’re getting convenience. But not character. You’re getting a bunch of red stuff”The City if San Diego said that “Red” Store has some hoops to jump through before even thinking of coming to OB.The city has a longstanding parking agreement with the former Antique Center and popular restaurant, South Beach Bar And Grille.During the Antique Center's business hours, the lot adjacent to their store was theirs. When they closed at 5 p.m., it was designated specifically for South Beach Bar and Grill patrons. So if a Target Express were to move in, that parking agreement would be grandfathered in. That means the new Target Express must close it’s doors by 5 p.m. as well, unlike many of its other stores that are open until 11 p.m. or midnight.“It sounds like a mess,” Ryan said. Ryan believes it has been a mess all along, saying the original parking agreement was odd, considering the distance between the restaurant and the lot. The two are almost two blocks apart.“It’s a far walk to South Beach [Bar and Grille],” Ryan said. “You can just park in the pier for free.”But if it keeps Target from moving in, Ryan said he was all for it.”Why don’t we turn it into like an indoor skate park or something,” Ryan asked. Target Corporation sent 10News this statement:"Target is always exploring possible locations for new stores, and we’re continuing to pursue the site on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. Among them were Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco and Jeri Ryan.Fifty years to the day after the first moon landing, Trekkers got an intergalactic treat at San Diego Comic-Con. At the panel, fans got to see a sneak preview of "Star Trek: Discovery The Third Season" and the new animated series "Star Trek: Below Deck". The biggest applause came when Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard appeared on stage. Stwart returns to the franchise in the new series, "Star Trek: Picard," a story about the Captain after "Star Trek: Next Generation"."I knew that something very unusual was going to happen, and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. They reopened for a few weeks in June, but state restrictions forced them to shut down once again.The alley has been closed ever since."So, they are really on the brink," said Greim. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California voters are right to think they already weighed in on how big cages should be for egg-laying hens.In 2008, voters ushered in Proposition 2, which sought to free egg-laying hens from tiny cages. It didn't outlaw cages but barred California farmers from keeping hens — as well as calves raised for veal and breeding pigs — in pens so small they virtually couldn't move.Since then, supermarket shelves have filled with cage-free egg varieties. Corporations like McDonald's, Costco and Taco Bell have committed to using cage-free products.RELATED: Proposed California initiative seeks to end high-speed railBut a decade later, voters are being asked to revisit the issue with Proposition 12, the Farm Animal Confinement Initiative.The Humane Society of the United States, the issue's primary proponent, says the measure is needed to update California standards and to apply those standards to out-of-state farmers selling their products in California. The earlier initiative simply stated the three types of animals must be able to turn around freely, stand up and fully extend their limbs — but set no specifics.A "yes" vote for Proposition 12 would create new minimum size requirements for confinement pens for all three animals and require that all egg-laying hens be cage-free by 2022.It would also ban the sales from other states not meeting California's standards.RELATED: No vote coming in 2018, but measure to expand convention center qualifies for ballotThe Humane Society calls the measure a "commonsense reform" that strengthens a decade-old animal cruelty law and gives farmers a phase-in time to shift to more humane practices."Most of the eggs sold in California come from birds confined in cages where it's hard for them to even move. San Diego (KGTV)- Homes and businesses aren't the only things being affected by power shut-offs Thursday. Traffic lights are also out, and it's causing a lot of confusion for drivers. Just before 10 a.m., a crash happened at the intersection of Poway Road and Highway 67, where the traffic lights had no power. A car slammed into the side of an SUV. Good Samaritans ran through traffic to assist and call 911. Both drivers are expected to be okay. Hours earlier, traffic backed up for about half a mile during the morning rush hour. Drivers were confused about their turn to go. "A lot of these people have been coming to this intersection for 30-plus years," says Deputy Nicholas McGregor. "They have an expectation that when they get here, it's going to be smooth, flow traffic. So when the lights go out, I think it's a hazard."Wednesday night, a car rammed into the back of a truck after power was shut off at the intersection of Scripps Poway Parkway and Highway 67. The car burst into flames moments after the crash.The Sheriff's Department says there are only about two hours of battery life on the traffic lights after the power is shut off. Deputies try to put as much signage out for drivers but say they should remain cautious. 1247
