SAN DIEGO — The race between two Democrats vying to become San Diego's next mayor is neck and neck, according to a new scientific poll. The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows State Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry 39 percent to 38 percent, with 24 percent undecided. The results are well within the SurveyUSA poll's 5.3 percent margin of error. The race is even closer now than it was a month ago, when a similar poll showed Bry leading Gloria 37 percent to 34 percent, also within the margin of error. While both are Democrats, the poll showed Bry getting a majority of her support from Republicans and Independents, while Todd Gloria retained a lead among Democrats. "Barbara Bry is talking about neighborhood issues and slowing down the growth of San Diego, whereas Todd Gloria is talking about addressing housing and doing some growth," said Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego. "That finds a political divide over growth that often separates moderates from liberals, or Democrats from Republicans even though both of these candidates Barbara Bry and Todd Gloria are both strong Democrats."Gloria took home 41 percent of the vote in the March primary, with Bry coming in second with 23 percent. She beat out Republican Scott Sherman by 1,189 to get into the top-two runoff, and his voters appear to be supporting her. SurveyUSA's poll shows 46 percent of Republicans voting in the mayor's race are supporting Bry, while 46 percent of independents voting in the race also plan to support Bry. Meanwhile, 24 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of independents voting in the race are supporting Gloria. Gloria's support is coming mostly from Democrats, with 53 percent of members of his own party planning to vote for him, compared to 27 percent for Bry. The remainder are undecided."There are different shades of blue within this city and this mayoral race is all about deciding what kind of Democrat San Diego will be governed by," Kousser said. In a statement, a spokesman for Gloria said they were focused on November 3. “The only poll that matters is Election Day," he said. "Our campaign will continue working hard to reach every San Diegan in every community and to earn every vote.”Bry's campaign also released a statement, saying the results were in line with their internal polling, showing the race in a dead heat. "We’re confident once voters understand the very real differences between the candidates – on issues ranging from protecting residential neighborhoods to re-starting our local economy and being independent from City Hall special interests – that we will prevail on November 3," the statement said. The poll surveyed 547 likely voters and was conducted between Oct. 1 and Oct. 5. 2762

SAN DIEGO (AP/KGTV) — Unlike most Californians, people in San Diego will be able to get a reprieve from the heat this Labor Day weekend by heading to movie theaters and dining inside a restaurant. Among California’s 10 most populous counties, San Diego is the only one with virus cases low enough to meet state standards for reopening theaters, museums and gyms, and resuming indoor dining — all with limited capacity to provide for physical distancing. San Diego County is listed in the state's second tier, or "substantial" tier, for cities reporting four to seven daily coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents and a positive test rate between 5% and 8%.As of Thursday, San Diego’s case rate is 5.8 and the testing positivity percentage is 3.8%. Since one of those metrics is in the second tier, the county isn't eligible to begin the 14-day countdown to qualify for the next tier of easing restrictions.Local officials say an aggressive reaction to outbreaks and a bipartisan approach have helped the county deal with the pandemic. While San Diego County has kept case rates low, the county reported two new outbreaks — in a business and in a restaurant/bar — on Thursday for a total of 17 community outbreaks in the last week.Officials warned this week that Labor Day weekend poses a threat to those gradually decreasing metrics and encouraged residents to be safe and avoid gatherings over the holiday weekend. 1422

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 48-year-old man riding a motorized bike may not survive the major injuries he sustained when he crashed into a vehicle Friday evening in the Grantville area of San Diego, authorities said. The victim was riding a motorized GT bike in the 6500 block of Mission Gorge Road about 7:55 p.m. when he attempted to cross from the west side of the street to the east side and crashed at a nearly 90-degree angle into the passenger side of a gray 2014 Subaru traveling northbound in the No. 2 lane, causing the bike to overturn, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department. The victim was taken to a hospital with major blunt force trauma and his survival was in question, Heims said.Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, he said. The SDPD Traffic Division investigated the accident. 825

SAN DEIGO (KGTV)-- Millions of students from around the world skipped class and took to the streets to call attention to climate change. San Diego was one of more than 3,600 locations that held the global Climate Change Walkout. Hundreds of teenagers marched from San Diego High School in Downtown to the San Diego Civic Center, hoping to make an impact, three days before the United Nations Climate Change Summit. It's a fight against time. Time, they say, the planet does not have. "Climate change is the existential threat of our generation," Elea Castiglione said. The sophomore at San Deigo High School organized the walkout with her friends. She and hundreds of students hoped their actions would inspire world leaders to take aggressive steps to combat climate change. Point Loma High School senior, Kisi Apaak performed her spoken-word piece, "Madness," at the San Diego Civic Center rally. Being 17, she said she does not have an income, nor does she have the right to vote. She said spoken-word is her way to show Mother Nature that she cares."This is all I know how to do, is write and talk and get out and take action," Apaak said. Many said they were inspired by Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist, who has now become the face of the movement. Activists here said San Diegans should be more involved, considering our geography."I think that San Diego as a city needs to go carbon neutral, and we also need to be leaders as a coastal city in our protest for nationwide and global change," Castiglione said. Change, they hope to see in the world, before it's too late."I'll pray. Pray with my hands and my feet and my voice. I'll pray that you join me before we don't have a choice," Apaak said in her performance. Several area school districts, including San Diego Unified, passed resolutions to support the campaign. Most of the walkouts required some form of parental permission. 1930
