SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police arrested a suspect following an early-morning shooting in the Gaslamp Quarter that left one man dead. The shooting was reported at around 2 a.m. Monday on Market Street at 5th Avenue, according to San Diego police.According to several witnesses, the shooting erupted following an argument outside of a venue between two groups of people. Witnesses told 10News the victim swung a folding sign at a group of men when one person in the group opened fire.The 33-year-old victim suffered at least one gunshot wound, and police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.RELATED: Friends remember father killed in Gaslamp shooting After the gunfire, witnesses said two men got into a cab and left the scene. However, police stopped the cab a short distance away and detained the men for questioning.Jonathan Hernandez, 23, was arrested after the shooting and booked into jail for murder. Shaun Spearman, a friend of the victim, told 10News that his friend “just had a heart of gold, always took care of people.”Spearman continued, “He’s the one that deescalates things … I’ve seen him, multiple times, have to bring things down. He’s a calming guy, he knows how to talk to people … It doesn't make sense yet. I'm just trying to make sense of it.”The victim has not been officially identified.Market Street, between 4th and 5th avenues, was closed for several hours due to the investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person is dead after being struck by an Amtrak train near the Sorrento Valley train station Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.Amtrak has called this a "trespasser incident." Pacific Surfliner trains 583 and 785 are severely delayed, Amtrak reported. The medical examiner is on the scene, and San Diego Police and sheriff's deputies are investigating the incident.No other details are available at this time. This is a developing story. 10News will update as information becomes available.   572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Prosecutors say streetlight camera video revealed the killer of an East Village business owner. A bevy of surveillance and streetlight video was released during the preliminary hearing for Kevin Cartwright and Lorena Espinoza, accused of killing of Tony Radda, 49.October 2018. Just before 3 p.m., store surveillance video shows a woman wearing a purple wig and sunglasses enter the store.Video shows Radda and the woman going towards the back, possibly to show her some merchandise. Right away, a man in a mask is seen trailing behind them, lurking. When Radda and the woman return, the man in the mask attacks Radda, dragging him out of camera range. Prosecutors believe that is when Radda was shot several times and killed.Soon after, the masked man is caught prying open a cash register. Prosecutors say while the woman took off in an SUV; the man walked away.According to prosecutors, that walk was captured by a string of streetlight cameras. In one of the videos - about 12 blocks away from the store - the man in the mask sheds it, revealing a face, police eventually identified as Cartwright. On Friday, the judge is expected to decide whether the two will go to trial. 1206

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Overall crime rates in San Diego are at historically low levels. But it's a mixed bag when you break down new statistics today from SANDAG.The good news is that property crime is down so far in 2017.Car thefts are down by 13-percent while burglary and larceny are each down by 9-percents for violent crime, it really depends on where you live.SANDAG breaks down the numbers into 17 jurisdictions. Violent crime is up this year in 12 of them.Those communities with a rise in crime were Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Encinitas, Lemon Grove, San Marcos, Santee, Vista, Fallbrook, Lakeside, Spring Valley, and Valley Center.Homicides are down 14-percent and rape is down by three. But robberies are up 3-percent and aggravated assault has increased 1-percent. 791

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - North Park’s Chicken Pie Shop is celebrating 80 years in business Friday and Saturday with deals for customers.The restaurant was originally located on 5th Avenue downtown. Then-owner George Whitehead moved his business to Hillcrest. The storefront at 5th and Robinson now houses a Starbucks.Eventually, Whitehead’s longtime employee John Townsend bought the business and moved it to El Cajon Blvd. at Oregon St. Townsend handed it down to his two sons.“Our father worked so hard for so many years. It’s a grind; you gotta be up for the task each and every day.”Bob Townsend is proud of the Chicken Pie Shop's history. He estimates the number of chicken pies sold at more than 30 million.“People just keep coming,” said Townsend. “They respect good old-school cooking.”Townsend described customers who travel to San Diego and head straight to North Park from the airport. Others buy coolers to bring home some of the restaurant’s frozen creations. Some devoted patrons included boxer Archie Moore and Mesa College coach Bill Sandback, both of whom Townsend served regularly until they passed.It’s not just the customers who stick around. The restaurant's dessert baker has been working for Chicken Pie Shop for 55 years and is now in his 80s.“If I made him retire, he’d probably die,” Townsend said.While Townsend is invested in the family legacy, his wife Lisa takes care of day-to-day operations while Townsend works as an instructor at Riverwalk Golf Course in Mission Valley. The Townsend family tradition may continue.
