As we head into cold and flu season, you can expect things will be handled differently at workplaces, schools, day cares and medical offices because of COVID-19.Anyone with symptoms like a runny nose, a cough or sneezing will likely be asked to stay home.“So, I think there's going to be a requirement for any of these symptoms for employee health at the workplace to take a larger role in screening patients probably a lot more testing,” said Dr. Scott Joy, Chief Medical Officer at Englewood Primary Care.Joy spoke with us about how people should handle these symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. He recommends staying home for 24 hours when you have a cold without a fever.If you have a fever, isolate for up to six days or until you've been fever free for a full 24 hours. If you're coughing or sneezing more than four times in an hour, you should probably stay home and see a doctor.“We haven't had a metric like that before, so we're going to experiment with that data point and see what it does to our workforce and our clinic infection control over this season,” said Joy.Joy also reminds people to get the flu shot.A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found people who got the vaccine had 25% fewer episodes of upper respiratory infections than those who didn't. That means fewer sick days from work and fewer doctor visits.The hope is that COVID-19 measures like handwashing, mask wearing and watching your distance will lead to fewer respiratory infections overall. BALDWIN, La. — New details are emerging as law enforcement investigates the death of a 15-year-old boy who died under suspicious circumstances in Louisiana.KATC obtained police reports from Oct. 30 when the teen, Quawan “Bobby” Charles, was reported missing from his home in Baldwin and was found dead four days later near Loreauville.Records show that Charles’ mother contacted the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office around 8:10 p.m. on Oct. 30 to report that her son was missing. The mother stated that her son did not come home and had on a West St. Mary High School jacket.SMPSO then dispatched an officer with the Baldwin Police Department to the 600 block of MLK Street in Baldwin.At 8:45 p.m., BPD spoke with Charles’ father and mother who said that he was last seen at around 4 p.m. Police then entered Charles’ name into the National Crime Information Center, which is a nationwide database used by law enforcement to locate missing persons, as a missing juvenile.According to a police report from BPD, Charles’ mother said that she was not present at the time that he went missing because he was staying with his father because the two did not live together. Charles had only recently been allowed to stay with his father for the two weeks prior to his disappearance.Charles’ father told police that he went to the store around 4 p.m., but after returning a few minutes later, he attempted to knock on the door to Charles’ room several times without a response.The father told police that he then used a tool to gain entry into the room and discovered the teen was missing.Both parents told police that Charles had not been a problem at home but had been placed on a curfew by the 16th Judicial District Court because of disciplinary problems at school.The parents told police that Charles did not have any friends and had never left home before without them knowing about it.The police state in the report that there was a football game taking place at West St. Mary High School in Baldwin as well as an event called Boo on the Bayou in Franklin. Charles’ father told police he would begin searching those areas. However, he later contacted SMPSO and said he was not able to locate Charles’ at either location.This is when police entered Charles’ name into the NCIC database as a missing juvenile while being on the lookout for him.Charles’ mother then told police that she would be heading back to her home in Youngsville to check and see if he had returned there.Charles was found dead four days later on Nov. 4 in a rural area off Ed Broussard Road near Loreauville. Since then, some family members are claiming Charles was murdered, and believe police ignored their initial cries for help.The family tells KATC they were told by investigators that Bobby drowned, but that they don't believe that. They cite a graphic photo of his body circulating online.Family members also say Charles left his home with a 17-year-old friend and the teen's mother without permission.Several dozen people, including Bobby's family, people from the community, and an organization called Stand Black, gathered on the courthouse steps Wednesday evening. They're demanding a thorough investigation of the case.The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. Deputies have not said if Charles was killed. IPSO says it's being investigated under suspicious circumstances. ATLANTA, GA. – The prevalence of adult obesity is increasing in the United States, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The CDC said Thursday that its 2019 Adult Obesity Prevalence Maps show that 12 states now have an obesity prevalence at or above 35%. Those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. This is up from nine states in 2018 and six states in 2017.The data also shows that racial and ethnic disparities still persist across the nation.A total of 34 states and Washington D.C. had an obesity prevalence of 35% or higher among non-Hispanic Black adults, 15 states had a prevalence of 35% or higher among Hispanic adults, and six states had a prevalence of 35% or higher among non-Hispanic white adults.Addressing the prevalence of obesity in America is more important than ever, because the CDC says obese adults are at heightened risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19. It increases the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.The CDC says obesity also disproportionately impacts some racial and ethnic minority groups who are also at increased risk of COVID-19.“These disparities underscore the need to remove barriers to healthy living and ensure that communities support a healthy, active lifestyle for all,” wrote the CDC in a press release.While system and environment changes can take time, officials say Americans can take small steps now to maintain or improve their health and protect themselves during the pandemic.“Being active and eating a healthy diet can support optimal immune function and help prevent or manage chronic diseases that worsen outcomes from COVID-19,” the CDC wrote. “These actions, as well as getting enough sleep and finding healthy ways to cope with stress can help with weight maintenance and improve overall health.” 1934
