SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 352 new COVID-19 cases and no new fatalities, raising the region's total to 57,102 cases with deaths remaining at 891.Of the 12,879 tests reported Saturday, 3% returned positive with 239 people hospitalized.The county avoided the state's purple tier, the most restrictive, for yet another week on Tuesday, remaining in the less restrictive red tier of the state's four-tiered coronavirus monitoring system.The county's adjusted case rate dropped to 6.5 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population.According to the California Department of Public Health, the county's unadjusted case rate is 7.4 per 100,000 -- enough to be in the purple tier, which has a floor of 7 per 100,000. This adjustment has kept the county in the red tier for several weeks, saving it from having to shut down nearly all nonessential indoor businesses.The state data, updated every Tuesday, reflects the previous week's case data to determine where counties stand in the state's reopening system.San Diego County did show modest improvement, dropping 0.4 from last week's unadjusted case rate of 7.8. The testing positivity rate continued an upward trend, rising 0.2% from last week to reach 3.5%, but remains low enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier. If a county reports statistics meeting metrics in a higher tier for two consecutive weeks, it will move into that more restrictive tier for a minimum of three weeks.The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the lowest healthy conditions, dropped from 5.5% to 5.1% and entered the orange tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance.All students at San Diego State University are under a stay-at-home advisory until 6 a.m. Monday. University officials said the move was made to discourage students from participating in Halloween events in which physical distancing cannot be done. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority announced a 10-year agreement with its airline partners Tuesday to improve transportation access to San Diego International Airport and potentially pave the way for a Metropolitan Transit System trolley route to the airport.The investment pact, totaling more than a half-billion dollars, could eventually fund multiple infrastructure projects to increase transit connections between the city of San Diego and the airport. The agreement includes funding from both the Airport Authority and its associated airlines that serve the San Diego International Airport.The projects, which are not yet approved, could include a multi-modal access road between the city and the airport, which would reduce traffic on Harbor Drive by roughly 45,000 vehicles each day.
