American Airlines is taking its long-grounded Boeing 737 Max jets out of storage, updating key flight-control software, and flying the planes in preparation for the first flights with paying passengers later this month.The airline invited press reporters and photographers on board one of the planes Wednesday to demonstrate its confidence in the plane’s safety.All Max jets worldwide were grounded in March 2019 after the second of two crashes that together killed 346 people. In the meantime, the airline plans flights with employees on board.Some relatives of people who died in the crashes — and who still believe the plane is unsafe — expressed outrage at both Boeing and American over what they termed a publicity stunt.Zipporah Kuria, a British citizen whose father died in the second Max crash, said Boeing and the FAA should instead turn over documents on changes made to fix the plane and how they were tested. The company has withheld the documents, saying they cover trade secrets.“I feel like Boeing is using the press to leverage public trust instead of actually genuinely earning public trust,” she said. “I’m really disgusted by the whole thing and the fact that American Airlines would pay for that. Their focus is more about the profit and corporate interest than it is about consumer safety.”Some people who lost family members believe that the FAA erred by not accepting all the recommendations made by pilots and aviation professionals during a public comment period on its proposal to let the plane fly again.Scrutiny of the plane has focused on a flight-control system called MCAS, which repeatedly pushed down the nose of the plane before both crashes. Boeing, which describes changes to the plane on its website, and the FAA say the system has been made less powerful and easier for pilots to override.Some of the family members, however, wanted a deeper, nose-to-tail review of the plane. And they don’t trust Boeing or the FAA, which allowed the plane to keep flying after the first crash, in Indonesia in 2018.“It hasn’t been evaluated to the point where we can say that it’s safe,” said Nadia Milleron, whose daughter was killed in the second crash, which occurred in Ethiopia. “This plane hasn’t flown very much with this new software, the revamped MCAS, interfacing with the plane. It’s not responsible for them to put you on this flight.”Chicago-based Boeing said Wednesday it has flown more than 1,400 test flights on updated Max planes. The FAA said its people put in 60,000 hours reviewing and testing Boeing’s work.American is likely to be the only U.S. carrier using the Max for several weeks. United Airlines expects to put the plane back in its schedule during the first quarter of next year, with Southwest following in the second quarter. Regulators in Europe and Brazil have cleared a path for their airlines to resume Max flights in a few weeks.It’s unclear whether the flying public will accept the plane or avoid it. Some industry officials believe that fear of getting on the plane has lessened with time. Which could come in handy as some people consider small holiday gatherings.It’s more risky to be in a small room compared to a large gym. If people are calm and quiet, it is safer than singing or exercising no matter how distant they are.Given these types of scenarios, and the “rapidly advancing science” of how COVID-19 droplets behave, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created the COVID-19 Indoor Safety Guideline application.Here’s an example:An average suburban house that is 2,000 square feet, with 25 people inside wearing cotton masks and talking in a whisper, can reduce their risk of transmission by only staying inside for 4 hours.If those same 25 people, in the same house, are not wearing a mask and are talking normally, the length of time to reduce transmission drops to just 50 minutes.And if those 25 people, in the same house, are singing along to Christmas music, without masks on, that time to safely reduce COVID-19 transmission indoors drops even further to just 8 minutes.If the size of the gathering is only 5 people, and there is still singing, no mask wearing, and it’s still a 2,000 square foot house, it becomes unsafe after just 27 minutes.The MIT website offers users the ability to select room size, number of people and length of time, then using previous research and scientific knowledge of airborne viruses, it predicts the risk of the indoor event. If the restaurant has 100 people, to reduce transmission risk, they should only remain inside for 64 minutes.The researchers note current general social distancing guidelines (remain 6 feet apart) suggest 138 people would reduce their risk in the same size of space for an indefinite amount of time.Another example, a Boeing 737, the researchers’ model predicts 100 people can be onboard a 737 wearing masks and still reduce their risk of transmission by staying onboard less than 6 hours.The CDC updated their guidance about COVID-19 this fall, acknowledging ongoing research that shows coronavirus droplets “can remain suspended for many minutes to hours (in the air) and travel far from the source on air currents.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also says coronavirus droplets can remain even when an infected person has left the room and can travel farther than six feet. 2800

An online Good Samaritan challenge that's gone viral prompted two Michigan brothers to offer free lawn mowing to people who can't easily do it themselves.Now, the nationwide challenge's organizer is headed to metro Detroit to recognize their efforts.16-year-old Sam and 13-year-old Hunter have mowed 51 lawns in Westland for free since April. It's a task most people hate, especially in the summer heat; but Sam loves it. So when his parents told him about the "50 Yard Challenge," it was a no-brainer.“We get the feeling that we’re helping people who really can’t help themselves," he said.Rodney Smith, Jr. created the challenge. He's the founder of Raising Men Lawn Care Service in Alabama."Back in 2015, I came across an elderly man outside mowing his lawn. It looked like he was struggling, so I pulled over and helped him out. That night I decided I’ve to start mowing free lawns for the elderly, disabled, single parents, and veterans in Huntsville, Alabama," Smith told WXYZ. Two brothers from Westland mowed 51 lawns since April FOR FREE. They’re offering help to the elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, or anyone who may need some help. So it was really cool to see the amount of community that came out. The boys have actually made what we think are going to be long-lasting relationships with some of these that don’t have contact with the outside world," their mom Keri told WXYZ.Fifty other kids from around the country have also completed the challenge, and about 1,000 are in the process of doing it now.“It’s just great. Especially when things kind of hit, a lot of the activities they weren’t able to do anymore. We couldn’t play baseball, we couldn’t go out to school, we couldn’t have activities to actually do," said their dad, Kyle.They may be helping others, but the boys said they're getting something really important out of the work too.“It’s heartwarming. We just get to meet nice people that just... that really want to have connections with other people that just can’t really go anywhere," said 13-year-old Hunter.“They appreciate what we do," Sam told WXYZ.
