SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. — Authorities are asking people to be on alert after a man in a white SUV attempted to lure a 10-year-old girl in San Tan Valley, Arizona on Wednesday. According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, shortly before 4 p.m., a 10-year-old girl was walking with a friend near a park in the North Pecan Creek neighborhood when a man driving a white SUV pulled up next to them.The man reportedly told the girl that her brothers were in a serious accident and that she needed to go with him. The girl then asked the man what the "code word" was, but the man did not know and drove off."Kudos to the parents of this child for having a code word and talking about to their children about stranger danger," said Sheriff Mark Lamb. "We hope by putting this out, it will encourage parents to have that conversation and create a plan with their children, so they know what to do if they are in that situation."The SUV has been reportedly seen circling the park several times a day, according to children who live in the neighborhood. “This is generally what I consider a pretty safe area, I’ve never heard of anything bad,” said Patrick McDonald, who lives nearby.“This one time, it saved my daughters life,” said Brenda James, the girl’s mother.James talked to KNXV and the media so that other parents could learn about code words as she did.“We actually just came up that few months ago. So it was something really recent from a story that I read,” James said.The man is described as being possibly in his 40s with a short beard. Christopher Barajas said he was pulling up to the line to head into the U.S, but turned back. "Everyone started screaming before I even get to the line," said Barajas. It happened around 7:30 p.m. when police and Customs and Border Protection officers say the driver of a white pick up truck refused to stop at a secondary inspection area. Instead, the twenty-three-year-old allegedly accelerated and tried to drive straight through the port into the United States before being blocked by a vehicle. Police say the driver started firing shots from inside his truck and then got out and continued shooting at officers. Seven C-B-P officers returned fire, hitting the man at least once. Officers and San Diego Fire Rescue crews performed life saving measures, but the suspect died at the scene."If they didn't find any individuals in there, smuggling, he was probably hiding something in there," said Barajas.White plastic garbage bags could be seen sitting on the truck's tailgate, but police haven't released any information about what, if anything, was found. SAN ONOFRE (CNS) - Authorities Thursday were searching for a hit-and-run motorist who struck and killed a pedestrian on Interstate 5 in the far northern reaches of San Diego County.Dispatchers received a call shortly before 6:40 a.m. from a person who reported seeing a body off of southbound Interstate 5 just south of Cristianitos Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Smale said.Officers responded to the area and found a pedestrian lying near the highway, Smale said, adding that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.No details about the victim or the vehicle involved were immediately available.Officers shut down the onramp from Cristianitos Road to southbound I-5 and the right two lanes of southbound I-5 north of Basilone Road to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.Anyone with information regarding the crash was asked to call the Oceanside CHP office at (760) 643-4300. 921
