BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Eight Conference of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification (CCPPNR) came to an end Thursday, re-electing senior leader Jia Qinglin the council's chairman.     Jia is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).     He attended the closing session and congratulated its success on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, saying facts indicate that the council has become a major link between the mainland and overseas Chinese, and a bridge between Chinese compatriots living on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.     He highlighted the role of the CPC in the great changes of New China in the past 60 years, stressing, "the Chinese nation will definitely play an even more splendid movement in the process of its great rejuvenation." BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI) decline pace would slow down in the second half and the CPI would drop about 0.5 percent for the whole year, Lian Ping, chief economist of Bank of Communications, the country's fifth largest lender, told Xinhua Sunday. China's CPI, a main gauge of inflation, dipped 1.1 percent in the first half from a year earlier, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) figures. China's consumer price index (CPI) decline pace would slow down in the second half and the CPI would drop about 0.5 percent for the whole year, Lian Ping, chief economist of Bank of Communications, the country's fifth largest lender, told Xinhua Sunday    "China might see a CPI rise in the fourth quarter along with the recovery of the economy," Lian said.     He predicted that China would see a moderate CPI rise next year, with the growth pace less than 4 percent.     The Shanghai-based bank said in a Saturday report that China's economy would continue to recover from the world financial crisis in the second half and expand at the rate of 8.5 percent for the whole year.

URUMQI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A key expressway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region began construction on Wednesday in a move to improve the region's road network and serve its economic development.     The 135-km expressway will link Kuytun City to Karamay City. The project, funded by the central government and Xinjiang regional government, will cost 3.87 billion yuan (about 567 million U.S. dollars).     The road is bidirectional with four lanes. It will be completed and put into use in November 2011.     Dai Gongxing, vice chairman of the Xinjiang regional government, said at the groundbreaking ceremony in Kuytun that the expressway, also part of the national expressway network, would improve the regional transport and promote local economic development.

BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is to be held from Sept. 15 to 18 this year, according to a statement issued Tuesday after a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     The decision was made at Tuesday's meeting, presided over by Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.     Participants at Tuesday's meeting discussed a draft document on improving Party building which is to be submitted to the four-day plenary session for deliberation.     The CPC has to improve the Party building to cope with "major development, reform and adjustment in the world" and to better lead all ethnic groups to concentrate on construction and development, the statement said.     To sum up the Party's invaluable experience of strengthening self-building since the founding of the People's Republic of China 60 years ago, and enhance the Party building in the new situation, the CPC should stick to the following principles detailed in the statement:     -- The CPC should be strict with the Party members by conducting strict education, administration, monitoring and self-criticism.     The Party should also make redoubled efforts to improve the Party's work style, build a clean government and fight corruption to maintain its advanced and immaculate nature.     -- The CPC should focus on theological and ideological construction to enable the Party's theory and practice to keep pace with the time and be creative.     -- More efforts will be made to enhance the CPC's creativity, cohesiveness and fighting capacity to guarantee the Party to do a better job in governing and rejuvenating the country, and building socialism with Chinese characteristics.     -- The CPC should stick to scientific and democratic rule and rule by law to make it always a representative of the development requirements of China's advanced social productive forces, the progressive course of China's advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people.     -- The CPC should meet the essential requirements of building the Party to serve the public interests and running the government for the benefit of the people.     -- The CPC should improve itself in an innovative way.
