NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A video show about Chinese people made its debut on screens at Times Square on Monday, presenting Americans a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people.With China's traditional red as the theme color, the 60-second video was shown on six screens simultaneously at Times Square with a billboard written "Experience China" on top of the screens. The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. "I learned in class that U.S. and China started diplomatic ties from playing the table tennis," she smiled.For Si Yaqin, who came to New York with her son for vacation, watching the debut of the video is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "It's my first time to New York, first time to Times Square," she told Xinhua. "How lucky I am here to witness this moment. I feel so proud as a Chinese."The video is part of the public diplomacy campaign by the Chinese government ahead of Chinese President Hu Jintao's U.S. state visit. The video will be shown at Times Square 15 times every hour from 6 am to 2 am next day, totaling 20 hours and 300 times a day. BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Saturday discussed the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula in phone calls with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and Japanese foreign minister Seiji Maehara.The discussions follow an artillery exchange between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in waters off the west coast of the divided peninsula on Tuesday.During the conversations, Yang said safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula served the common interests of concerned parties.Those parties should call on the DPRK and South Korea to exercise calmness and restraint and hold dialogue and make contacts, and not to take actions that would escalate the conflict, he said.He said all parties should work together to help cool the situation as soon as possible and effectively ensure no repeat of such conflict.Meanwhile, the Chinese minister expressed the hope that concerned parties would take a reasonable and pragmatic approach to actively create favorable conditions for resuming the six-party talks.The parties should also commit themselves to establish related mechanisms at an early date to eliminate various factors threatening peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole region.Lavrov said Russia agreed with China on the latest situation and was ready to keep close contact with China to help defuse the tensions on the peninsula and create conditions for a restart of the six-party talks.Maehara said that Japan is willing to work together with China to jointly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and push forward the denuclearization process of the Peninsula.During Tuesday's incident, shells landed on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island near the contentious sea border called Northern Limit Line (NLL). BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China released an amended anti-corruption regulation on Wednesday in which it sets out unprecedented penalties that include imposing punishments for corrupt Party officials, even if they have left their posts or retired.The amended regulation, the latest move of the Communist Party of China(CPC) to battle corruption, was jointly implemented by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, China's cabinet.Based on a version that took effect in 1998, the amended regulation adds more articles detailing punishments for corrupt officials. It has expanded from 17 articles to 32 articles.Those newly added articles were mainly dedicated to detail the supervisory instructions and liabilities by imbedding provisions from various other regulations in recent years. For example, previously, to punish a retired official was something that was rarely heard of in China.One of the notable changes in the past decade was the popular use of the Internet, which opened up a new channel for the public to supervise officials, said professor Wang Yukai with the Chinese Academy of Governance.The public is able to report more corruption cases through the Internet and by implementing the new regulation, and corrupt officials will have to spend a lifetime constantly 'watching their back,' analysts say.The amended regulation underlines CPC officials' responsibility in promoting transparency when exercising their power and stresses mutual supervision among officials who respectively exercise the power of decision-making, enforcement and supervision.In addition, different punishments were specified for the collective leading organizations and individual leaders in the amended version.In article 18 of the amended regulation, the public is asked to supervise CPC officials, despite no specifications being mentioned in how they might participate.Law enforcement and strengthened supervision from the public and mediaare the key to fighting corruption, professor Wang added.

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) announced Monday that it will guide the nation's banks to a scientific pace of lending this year as it stressed bank loans should better serve the real economy.The CBRC said in a statement on its website that it will also expand and improve financial services in the country's rural areas and encourage banks to support borrowing activities from small-sized companies.The CBRC said it will carry out more studies in stepping up support for the country's affordable housing program, which aims to build 10 million affordable housing units for low and middle income residents this year.The commission also said it will continue to implement the differentiated home loan policy adopted last year, under which bank loans for third home purchases are suspended and down payments for all first-time home buyers are at least 30 percent of the purchase price, while second home buyers will have to pay an even higher amount of down payments, at 50 percent.Further, the CBRC said it would tighten controls over lending to local government's financing vehicles in order to ward off risks.Government data showed new yuan-denominated lending in China reached 7.95 trillion yuan (about 1.2 trillion U.S. Dollars) last year, overshooting the government's full-year target of 7.5 trillion yuan.
