SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 10News team is celebrating the return of morning reporter Marie Coronel."I'm so glad to be back here with you guys," she told the morning 10News team in an emotional appearance in the studio Wednesday.About three and half years ago, Marie and 10News photographer Mike Gold were in Mira Mesa preparing for a live report on storm damage when heavy branches snapped off a massive eucalyptus tree crushing the both of them. Mike was able to recover from his injuries and was back to work a few months later, but it's taken years for Marie to recover from multiple injuries and return to the newsroom."This has been a crazy long journey...it's been so tough emotionally, physically, and me going through physical therapy, then doing all of this while raising our three little boys," she said.During her recovery, the native San Diegan stayed active and connected in the community through social media. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic is preventing many seniors in skilled nursing facilities from seeing their families. UC San Diego students are working to help combat their loneliness with their Sunshine 4 Seniors project. Students would spend their weekends visiting seniors as part of a volunteer project before classes were canceled at UC San Diego. The pandemic halted their visits. "We came up with this project, which was creating cards for seniors at St. Paul Senior Services," says student Olivia Michael. The goal of the project is for students to "step in and fill the loneliness and isolation that the senior citizen communities are feeling, especially during this pandemic," says Morgan Montoya. The students say loneliness in seniors can have damaging effects on the brain. "Olivia and I are near-cognitive science majors," says Montoya. "Our majors really helped us to understand the problems that loneliness poses. With senior citizens having an abundance of isolation and loneliness, it can actually deregulate the brain and cause a progression of Alzheimer's or depression."The Sunshine 4 Seniors project launched nearly a month ago. So far, more than 200 cards have been sent to seniors in skilled nursing facilities. The students say there are thousands of seniors who are not allowed to see their loved ones during this time. They hope to spread some sunshine to as many seniors as they can. "The goal is just to get as many people writing cards as possible," says Michael. "Any means that you have to do it, I just encourage you to get started." 1586

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego could make the unorthodox move of refusing to reveal a directory of its 11,000-plus employees.A new memo from City Attorney Mara Elliott's office says officials fear doing so could increase the risk of cyber attack. "You have indicated that releasing all City employee email addresses at once could create a potential threat to the City's cybersecurity because it would make it substantially easier for bad actors to launch phishing attacks against the City, which could interrupt critical City operations," says the Sept. 20 memo. The Union-Tribune recently made a California Public Records Act request for names, work email addresses and phone numbers of all city employees, which is disclosable under the act. Cyber security experts say public agencies have been facing a barrage of hacking attempts because they control critical civic operations. Last year, hackers shut down some operations at the Port of San Diego, and the city of Atlanta has spent millions to recover a system after a ,000 ransomware attack. Ted Harrington, an executive partner at Independent Security Evaluators, said hackers often try to get victims to open attachments in emails, known as phishing. "It's an attack method where when the victim either clicks a link or downloads an attachment, that automatically installs some sort of malware or directors that particular victim to a malicious website, and then all kinds of bad things can happen from there," he said. The City Attorney's memo existing case law suggests there are circumstances where not disclosing the list of workers outweighs the public interest in disclosing them, but leaves it up to the city on a final determination. Jeff Light, the editor and publisher of the Union-Tribune, said in a statement that he understands the cyber security concern, but that it shouldn't keep the information from being disclosed. "Public information law in California says that 'access to information concerning the conduct of the people’s business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state,'" Light said. "I don’t see how that principle squares with this theory that the government should not reveal the phone extension or email of a city employee."The City Attorney memo notes that while the city may not release a full directory, residents do have access to contact information for city officials they may need to contact. A San Diego Police flyer indicated he was prepared to meet friends and never arrived.Billingsly earned a degree in business administration and marketing from SDSU. He traveled to his native Sacramento and earned money for his return to San Diego, his mother Christel told 10News.Christel Billingsley said her son was looking for a job and wanted to save on rent. After June 1, he did not have a permanent address and started couch-surfing at friends’ homes in Pacific Beach.Wesley and his Ford Expedition disappeared June 12. “It’s completely out of character,” said his mother.Christel paid her son’s phone bill and described him as a social media junkie. About two months ago, the phone stopped showing activity.“Everything stopped on June 12. He just vanished off the face of this earth,” Christel said.Christel is employed as a school officer manager in Sacramento and recently returned to her job after summer break.
