ENSHI, HUBEI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's most difficult mountain railway was linked up in Enshi Prefecture, central China's Hubei Province, and is expected to open within the year, according to officials at the railway's construction headquarters Wednesday.The Yichang-Yiwan Railway, totalling 377 km in length, runs from the Yiwan District in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to Yichang City of Hubei Province.It was designed to greatly shorten the journey between the mountainous regions in the southwest and the eastern parts of China, according to Zhang Mei, head of the engineering administration center of the Ministry of Railway.The railway trip from Chongqing to Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, for example, will take only five hours once the link is open to rail traffic, instead of the previous 22 hours, said Zhang.The railway was first laid out in 1903 by Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Kuomintang party, over 100 years ago.The reason the construction had not begun till 2003 is that the railway must travel one of the most mountainous regions in China's southwest, whose difficult terrain made the construction work the most difficult in China's railway history, said Zhang."Beneath the luxuriant mountains we encountered myriad natural barriers, such as underground rivers, limestone caves, and coal seams," said Zhang.To link the line, workers had to build 253 bridges and dig 159 tunnels, which account for 74 percent of the total railway length, winning the railway the title of the "tunnel and bridge museum."Starting in late 2003, it took seven years for the construction to be completed, said Zhao Hui, project manager of China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group, which undertook the construction."I joined the project at the age of 25, and now I'm 32. BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Long March and its legacy had contributed to shaping an extraordinary China, said former U.S. national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, when he called upon the headquarter of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) in Beijing on Monday.His meeting with senior Chinese military leader Xu Caihou started with the memory of the Long March which set Brzezinski in mind of his trip to retrace the Long March in 1981."I learned you had retraced China' s Long March with your family before and your wife is a well-known sculptor," said Xu, who showed Brzezinski around the meeting hall where a set of stone carvings were placed portraying the Chinese Red Army and their epic Long March from 1934 to 1936."Currently China's modern construction and its reform cause are another new Long March, and to stick to a peaceful development road is China's long-term and strategic choice," said Xu, CMC Vice Chairman.Brzezinski, who served under former U.S. President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981, had retraced part of the route of the Long March with his family when visiting China in July of 1981.After that China tour, he wrote an article for the Life Magazine titled "An American Family Retraces Mao's Long March", in which he said "For the emerging new China, the Long March is more than an epic of almost unmatched heroism. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, has risen to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, with 505 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.The county education department said Saturday that primary and middle schools in Zhouqu will start the autumn semester on Aug. 25, ten days later than scheduled.This was because hundreds of homes and one primary school were buried and more schools were damaged or inundated in water.
