The China-Pakistan trade volume only accounted for one-tenth of Pakistan's overall foreign trade, he said, voicing his hope that the two-way trade could top 10 billion dollars as soon as possible.With regard to trade imbalance, Wen said China understood the concern of Pakistan on the imbalance, and has taken measures to address the issue."China is ready to work closely with Pakistan to push forward the building of a bilateral free trade area in an all-round way, and gradually grant zero-tariff status to more Pakistani products," he said.He vowed to send a trade and investment promotion delegation to Pakistan for purchase purposes at an appropriate time, hold commodity fairs for South Asian countries, and offer favorable terms for Pakistani products.Calling trade cooperation a link for the China-Pakistan cooperation, Wen said the bilateral trade has witnessed remarkable growth and benefited both peoples.Bilateral trade volume increased to 6.8 billion dollars in 2009 from 1 billion dollars in 2000.Though affected by the global financial crisis and natural disasters, the two-way trade in the first 10 months of 2010 reached the total volume of 2009, an increase of 27 percent over the same period of last year, Wen said.

MANILA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- A cargo ship with 24 Chinese crew aboard sank off the waters of the Philippines' Batanes province on Friday afternoon, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Saturday.Quoting a report from the Batanes provincial police office, PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz said Saturday the Panama cargo vessel MV Hong Wei met the incident about 120 nautical miles (222 kilometers) off Itbayat island around 3:22 p.m. Friday.Cruz could not immediately say what caused the vessel to sink or the vessel's destination.A passing vessel, MV Shun Tong, and a ship from China's Taiwan region's coast guard rescued 12 crew and two passengers, respectively, said Cruz, adding that at least three ships from Taiwan region's coast guard are currently at the scene to conduct search and rescue operations for the 10 still missing crew members.A rescue vessel from the Chinese mainland is expected to arrive at the site anytime Saturday to join the search and rescue operations, said Cruz.Wang Ben, police attache of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Philippines, told Xinhua that the embassy has confirmed the incident with China's Ministry of Transport. The ministry said that rescuing vessels from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan are conducting joint search and rescue operations, said Wang.The Philippines, a Southeast Asian archipelago country, is located to the south of China.

BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday responded to Japan's new defense guidelines, saying China had no intention of threatening anybody.Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu made the remarks when responding to a question on the subject."A certain country has no right to act as a representative of the international community and make irresponsible remarks on China's development," she said.Japan adopted the National Defence Programme Guidelines Friday. Media reports said the guidelines claimed China's military development and lack of transparency were matters of concern to the region and international community, and urged nations to encourage China to act responsibly.China unswervingly follows the path of peaceful development, and its defense policy is defensive in nature, Jiang said, adding that China poses no threat to anybody."The fact is that China's development since its reform and opening up, has brought huge opportunities of common prosperity to the world, including Japan," Jiang said.

TOKYO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Japan Friday for the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which is slated for Saturday and Sunday in Yokohama.Hu and his wife, Liu Yongqing, were welcomed by senior officials from the Japanese Foreign Ministry at Haneda airport.Chief Executive Donald Tsang of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua were also present at the airport to greet Hu.President Hu, who flew into Tokyo from Seoul after attending the fifth summit of the Group of 20 (G20), was traveling by car to Yokohama.With the theme of "Change and Action," this year's Economic Leaders' Meeting will focus on the regional economic integration, a growth strategy for the Asia-Pacific region, human security, the economic and technical cooperation, and the assessment of achievement of Bogor Goals by APEC economies, according to the meeting agenda.The Bogor Goals call for free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for industrialized economies and by 2020 for developing economies. BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- A draft amendment to China's Criminal Law remained unchanged in reducing the number of crimes subject to the death penalty.The draft amendment was submitted Monday to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, for its second reading.In August this year, the NPC Standing Committee discussed the draft amendment during its first reading. The draft amendment will make 13 crimes exempt from capital punishment, if it becomes law.The crimes included: smuggling cultural relics, gold, silver, and other precious metals and rare animals and their products out of the country; carrying out fraudulent activities with financial bills; carrying out fraudulent activities with letters of credit; the false issuance of exclusive value-added tax invoices to defraud export tax refunds or to offset taxes; the forging or selling of forged exclusive value-added tax invoices; the teaching of crime-committing methods; and robbing ancient cultural ruins.During the process of the NPC Standing Committee's discussion, when the draft amendment was released for public submissions, some people suggested some of the 13 crimes be given death penalty while others thought that more crimes should be exempt from capital punishment.If the amendment becomes law, it will be the first time the number of crimes subject to the death penalty has been reduced since the People's Republic of China enacted its criminal law in 1979. It will also be a move by China to limit the use of the death penalty, after the Supreme People's Court in 2007 began to review and approve all death penalty decisions.The current law allows the death penalty for 68 crimes. The draft amendment, if passed, will reduce that number to 55.
