SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Scripps Ranch man left for the storm ravaged Caribbean Island of St. Maarten Monday. RELATED: 70 percent of St. Maarten homes badly damaged, as Jose prepares to hitDrew Goodwin is volunteering his time and equipment to help recovery crews with his drones.Irma pounded the islands when it made landfall there last week.“I know (military personnel) are going to help restore order and make things safer so people can get in to start recovery,” Goodwin said.Goodwin is with Emergency Response Drones, a nonprofit that provides drone services to agencies.  He’s assisted with search and rescue efforts locally.He raised money so he can fly himself and his equipment to the island.“I have the support and resources, and if I didn’t do it, I would be ashamed of myself,” Goodwin said. 822

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego professor is one of 55 people to make up California’s Electoral College for the 2020 election. Peter Bolland is the Chair of the Philosophy and Humanities Department at Southwestern College. He’s been at the school for 30 years and during that time taught Ammar Campa-Najjar, who is the person who selected him to become an elector.California gets 55 electors because of the 53 congressional districts and two senators. Electors are chosen by the party’s nominee who won the popular vote. Campa-Najjar got the most votes for Congress’ 50th District primary election in 2020, making him the person to choose the elector. Campa-Najjar chose Bolland.RELATED: In-Depth: How the Electoral College works"He called me and said, 'hey you want to do this,' I’m like, 'you mean the Electoral College the thing that everyone hates? Sure let's do it,'" said Bolland.Bolland said he’ll be flying to Sacramento on Dec. 14 to cast his vote. That vote, however, can only be for one person."I don’t even have any choice about who to vote for because California, like 48 states, is a winner-take-all state. So Biden won California, I’ll be casting my vote for Biden regardless of what my political views are," said Bolland.He added that he’s honored to be chosen in such a historic role, but acknowledges the flaws in the Electoral College system."Politically, I’ve had my concerns and questions about the Electoral College. It’s fundamentally anti-democratic," he said.The Electoral College was created by our founding fathers in 1787. They wanted to find a balance between giving too much power to the people with a simple popular vote, without giving all of the power to Congress. The Electoral College was their solution.Bolland points out that it makes some votes useless.“Last night, Joe Biden won by like 60 something percent and Trump lost by 30 something percent. But that’s a lot of people in California who voted for Trump and with the Electoral College they get erased,” he said, adding that there are Biden votes that get erased in right-leaning states as well. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego police officer was involved in a shooting outside a music venue in downtown San Diego just before 7 p.m. Saturday.San Diego Police Lt. Mike Holden said that a white man in his thirties was acting violently on top of a vehicle hood on the corner of W. Ash Street and India Street.The man was only wearing pants and did not have a shirt or shoes on and was standing on the hood of a car yelling at the driver, police said. A police officer tried to take the man into custody and used a Taser, which did not subdue him. Police said the man continued to act violently.The officer then fired one shot, which did not hit anybody."The officer continued to struggle with the suspect," said Lt. Mike Holden of the San Diego Police Department. "At one point during the struggle the officer feared for his life. The officer fired one round from his handgun, but missed the suspect."The suspect, Brent Zadina, 30, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for observation. Police do not believe Zadina was armed.The officer sustained minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital, Holden said. Police are investigating the incident near the Music Box. The roads were closed nearby for the investigation but have since reopened.This is a developing story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An innovative K-12 curriculum created by the Cajon Valley Union School District (CVUSD) is gaining nationwide attention.World of Work aims to tackles problems seen in the education system head-on. "The programs that we have here at Fuerte are really empowering the students to think differently. They are really empowering them to challenge the adults to rethink education," said Kristen Goodrich, Principal of Fuerte Elementary. Through various activities, students discover which of six personality traits fits them best and the careers that could be a good match.It's called the RIASEC Model:RealisticInvestigativeArtisticSocialEnterprisingConventionalOn Tuesday, education and state leaders toured schools in the district as part of the ExcelinEd 2019 National Summit on Education Reform. "I jumped at the opportunity because it sounds like there's a lot of things going right here," said Wendy Horman, an Idaho State Representative. World of Work students receive hands-on experiences, meet a professional in the career, and practice skills needed in that career.By fourth grade, students are creating resumes, and by fifth, they're applying for jobs and doing interviews. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534
