SAN DIEGO -- Qualcomm announced Tuesday that the company reached an agreement to purchase Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors. One of Qualcomm’s subsidiaries will pay 7.50 per share for all outstanding shares of the company.Boards from both companies agreed on the deal which is contingent upon 70 percent of NXP’s shares being tendered. RELATED: Qualcomm rejects Broadcom's 'best and final' offer"The acquisition of NXP will enable us to accelerate our growth strategy," said Qualcomm board member Tom Horton. "The board unanimously believes this is an attractive acquisition at this price for Qualcomm stockholders based on NXP's recent strong financial performance, the growth in key strategic areas such as auto and (the internet of things) and our high confidence in management's ability to execute upon the synergy opportunities."The billion deal comes one week after leaders of Qualcomm met with Broadcom executives to discuss a 6 billion buyout.RELATED: Broadcom submits 'best and final' offer in attempt to acquire San Diego-based QualcommQualcomm has rejected buyout offers from Broadcom twice. Broadcom said during the last talks between the two companies that this was its “best and last offer” to purchase Qualcomm.Officials with Qualcomm cited low per-share price and lack of assurance from Broadcom that it would do everything it could to ensure the deal would pass regulatory scrutiny. 1432

SAN DIEGO — The latest shutdown order has not been kind to San Diego restaurants this holiday season, but some chose to remain open on Christmas despite being relegated to takeout-only service. Harry Kim made the executive decision to keep north park diner open on Christmas for the first time. And to say the restaurant is stretched thin would be an understatement.“it’s hitting us really hard,” Kim said. “When we had outside dining I had employees, five of them. Right now I just work with me and my wife.”Kim has owned the diner since 2007, and says opening on Christmas provides an opportunity for more sales if everyone else was closed. He says it paid off with some extra takeout orders and others through UberEats and GrubHub.Meanwhile, at downtown's Gaslamp BBQ, a skeleton crew handled a steady stream of takeout orders. Owner Tarik Marogy always keeps the restaurant open on Christmas, so 2020 would be no different.“We know we are going to be busy today because a lot of the restaurants usually close,” Marogy said.Marogy says the barbecue has been hit hard in the pandemic. He reduced his employees from 20 to 8. In all, nearly 110,000 San Diegans worked in local restaurants in November, down more than 15 percent compared to November 2019, according to the latest state data available. That was before the most recent shutdown order went into effect.Margoy said, however, that Christmas night orders exceeded his expectations.“I didn’t expect that I'm going to have that much business because of the Covid. But I was surprised, and thank God business was good,” Marogy saidHe says he's hopeful things are going to get better in 2021. And the barbecue will be open January 1 to ring in the new year. 1721

SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to smuggling two Mexican nationals in East San Diego County.Mambasse Koulabalo Patara was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint, about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The court documents claim Patara told Border Patrol agents he was an off-duty officer and showed them his LAPD identification.Patara had two men inside his black Toyota Corolla and appeared to be very nervous, shaking and avoiding eye contact, the Border Patrol said.Agents seized Patara's service pistol from his waistband after he told them he was armed.Patara was taken into custody after authorities say two of the men inside the vehicle admitted they were not U.S. citizens.Fermin Lopez and his nephew, German Ramirez-Gonzalez, admitted to being citizens of Mexico. At his arraignment, Patara pleaded not guilty. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted. 975

SAN DIEGO – Delegates at the California Democratic Party State Convention failed to endorse any candidates for U.S. Senate, governor and attorney general, denying Dianne Feinstein endorsement in her bid to stay seated in the U.S. Senate. The indecision sent shock through the party with 54 percent of the vote going to state Senate leader Kevin de Leon and 37 percent for Feinstein."The outcome of today's endorsement vote is an astounding rejection of politics as usual, and it boosts our campaign's momentum as we all stand shoulder to shoulder against a complacent status quo," de Leon said late Saturday in a prepared statement.Still, Feinstein holds a sizable lead over de Leon in statewide polls.Meanwhile, the gubernatorial vote was split between Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom. State Treasurer John Chiang, former state Superintendent Delaine Eastin and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The convention wraps up Sunday at the San Diego Convention Center with delegates expected to adopt the 2018 party platform. 1039

SALEM, Idaho -- A neighbor who lives across the street from Chad Daybell is describing what he saw in the months after two children went missing. The remains of those children were discovered on Daybell's property.Family members confirmed the remains recovered by Rexburg police and the FBI belong to Joshua JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. JJ would have recently turned 8 years old, and Tylee was 17.Both disappeared at different times from Rexburg, Idaho, last September.Matthew Price said he's lived across the street from Chad Daybell, the entire time Chad and his family have lived in Idaho. He's been following the investigation into the missing children, and the suspicions that centered on his neighbor."We've been very concerned the whole time for JJ and Tylee," Matthew said.He watched out his windows and from his yard as law enforcement spent two days digging in Chad's yard, and searching the property.Matthew recognized the area where investigators brought in a backhoe to dig a deep hole, where it appears they recovered the children's remains. Now that he thinks back, he is remembering some incidents that stand out in that exact spot."We noticed they were having a few bonfires that were kind of out of the ordinary," he explained. "They had a big bonfire last fall, and they had two or three big bonfires this spring."Last fall, no one knew about the disappearance of JJ and Tylee. Matthew described that things seemed okay, aside from the bonfires, but that he did have one weird interaction with Chad.He said Chad and his late wife, Tammy Daybell, came over to his house to buy pumpkins."He was strange, he was different," Matthew described. "He didn't talk a lot, didn't make eye contact with us very much. Normally he would."Matthew said it was very out of character, but he figured Chad was having a bad day. He said Tammy died a week later.Eventually, Matthew learned about the search for JJ and Tylee, and the investigation into Chad Daybell and his new wife Lori Vallow Daybell, JJ and Tylee's mother. After Lori ended up in jail in nearby Madison County, Chad returned to his Salem home. Matt recalled that Chad kept to himself for the last couple of months, barely leaving the house. He said when Chad did leave the house, it was late at night.Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. Matthew was standing outside when he said he saw a convoy of law enforcement coming down the road to serve a search warrant. They surrounded the home, he said, and made all of Chad's adult children leave the house. Chad also left, but Matthew said Chad sat in his car for hours. Then suddenly, Matthew saw Chad try to leave."I saw his car take off down the road headed south towards Rexburg," Matthew said. "Just seconds later, the marked police cars had their lights and sirens, and floored it to go catch him."Now, Matthew's neighbor of several years is in jail, and police have made a devastating discovery right across the street from Matthew's home.Wednesday evening, police turned the home back over to the adult Daybell children. They were seen packing up and moving furniture out of the home, loading it onto a trailer and into truck beds. They quickly left.In all of this, what helps give Matthew peace of mind: "Just knowing there's closure for JJ and Tylee," he said.Next, the community is hoping for justice. 3317
