(KGTV) — A fundraising t-shirt made for an Escondido Police officer fighting brain cancer was banned from Palomar Hospital after someone deemed it racist.Escondido Police Officer Brett Byler, 31, seemed to have it all: a beautiful family and his dream job. But in February, his life turned upside down."He went for a bike ride, and he collapsed," Officer Byler's father, Jim Byler said. "He went to the emergency room, and four days later, he was having brain surgery."The young father of three was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Byler said the news was devastating, but the community immediately showed their support. Within days, a friend and employee at Palomar Hospital, where Officer Byler was doing rehab, asked if they could make a fundraiser t-shirt for Byler."I thought it was awesome. It was just an act of kindness and generosity, and it kind of overwhelmed us," Byler said, tearing up.The friend designed an original logo with the family's silhouette in front of an American flag with red white and blue stripes, each color representing fire, medical personnel, and police.Byler said it was a big hit. Along with the Gofundme, it raised a lot of money, and hospital staff wore the T-shirt for months."Everything was good, and then we found out that the shirt was being characterized as something that it was clearly never intended to be," Byler said.According to Palomar Hospital, a patient and staff member recently reported that the shirt was racist and that they were offended by it. The blue line in a similarly designed shirt has caused national controversy in recent months, where some have interpreted it as "Anti-Black Lives Matter." So the hospital asked staff wearing the shirt on-duty, to take it off immediately. The Bylers said they were appalled."It's so upsetting that such a positive, unifying message morphed into and mischaracterized into something that is so hateful," Jim Byler said.A hospital spokesman told ABC 10News that they support Officer Byler. They are filled with residents like Suzanne Bridges."I get up at 4 in the morning; I’m here by 4:30,” she explained.Bridges and all the others in line are waiting for a necessity to live.“Water. Water is the main source in my home. We drink a lot of it,” Bridges said.When asked if she trusts the water that flows from her faucets and shower in her home, her answer is clear.“No,” she said.Throughout the day, the line of cars continues to grow. As it stretches down the street and around the block, it becomes clear how the Flint water crisis continues to live on.“As you can see, the lines after five years are still very, very long, and the need does not seem to get any better,” said resident Sandra Jones.Every week, Jones is at the front of the line.She runs the RL Jones Community Center, which hands out cases of bottled water to people who live in the City of Flint.“I’ve seen it all because I’m out here with them, and if you don’t have a heart, I don’t even understand. I’ve seen parents who have not been able to potty train a child at 4 years old, and these people come through these lines that hurts my heart.”In June of 2019, at a National Press Club event, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler said Flint’s water is safe to drink.“We test their water on a regular basis. We’re working with the local city, as well as the state,” Wheeler said. “We’re still providing bottled drinking water to people if they need it, but at this point, the water quality in Flint, Michigan is safe to drink.”But in Flint, trust in the water and the government has run dry.“Even though they say it’s safe to drink, we still are afraid of drinking the water,” said Steven Atkins, a Flint resident."It’s something that we have to have. It’s important that we need it, but now we just can’t trust it,” said resident VanNessa Taylor.In August, the state of Michigan agreed to a 0 million settlement with those impacted by the water crisis, and 80 percent of the money will go to children.Jones says that money will only go so far. Transparency must bring back trust.“That’s where we are,” she said. “This was a marriage and you cheated on me for your benefit, not for my benefit.”Jones says the pandemic has made giving bottled water away even more difficult. She’s faced a shortage of volunteers to give away the water to the cars that come through. She says the lines grow outside her community center each week, six years after the Flint water crisis first began.However, Jones says she will continue to fill trunk after trunk until the cars no longer need to come through.“This city has got to get back whole again. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live on Bonita Drive in Encinitas want the city to stop a 10-home development on their street. They say it will make the area more dangerous if a wildfire breaks out."It's a huge concern," says Sione Schad-Siebert. "When the fire starts, and Santa Ana winds blow, they move fast, and you need to get out fast."Plans for the project call for 10 single-family homes to be built on a mostly empty 2.4-acre lot. People who live around it say adding the homes will allow fires to spread faster and cause more congestion on the street if people need to evacuate.Schad-Siebert showed 10News parts of the street where the road narrows to just over the width of a couple of cars. She says fire engines can hardly get through as it is. She also worries that a nearby open-space nature trail could catch fire and decimate the neighborhood."If there's ever a fire in the canyon or if a house here catches on fire, the fire department will not get here in time to stop the fire from spreading through the neighborhood because of poor access," she says.The City Planning Commission approved the project in November, but the residents have filed an appeal.In the appeal, they list fire danger as one of six problems the new homes will bring to the area. Among the other claims are traffic issues, environmental concerns, and questions about ways they say the project skirted city rules during the approval process."I feel like the city's kind of losing its soul," says Schad-Siebert. "I feel it's selling out to developers from out of town that just want to make a lot of money."Housing has been a problem in Encinitas, where city leaders have traditionally shunned large developments. Until 2019, it had been more than two decades since the city successfully submitted a housing and growth plan to the state. The mayor says that has to change.As for the appeal, the Planning Department staff issued a 23-page memo refuting the claims point-by-point. It says the City Council should deny the appeal and move forward with the project.Schad-Siebert says if that happens, she and her neighbors plan to file a lawsuit to stop the construction.The Encinitas City Council will vote on the appeal at Wednesday night's meeting, which begins at 6 pm. (KGTV) — An Escondido restaurant forced closed by the county for violating health orders has been approved to reopen.Hernandez Hideaway was closed last week after its owner allegedly refused to comply with San Diego County's public health orders for facial coverings and social distancing.According to the restaurant's Facebook page, the location was allowed to reopen on June 27.RELATED: New restrictions placed on bars, restaurants in San Diego County amid coronavirus“Hernandez Hideaway is clear to reopen. They have agreed to follow state restaurant reopening guidelines. This includes their commitment to use facial coverings and ensure social distancing. ERIE, Colo. — A woman says the man she met online and dated for a month-and-a-half robbed her of thousands of dollars worth of valuables, tried to pawn them for cash, and then disappeared. Police have now issued a warrant for his arrest.“I let him into my world completely and I was completely betrayed,” Michelle Cohagan said.She met Joshua Law on the site Plenty of Fish. They dated for a few weeks and became close, with Law spending a lot of time at her Erie home. One night, Cohagan noticed that two of her digital cameras and her roommate’s GoPro camera went missing. A few days later, Law disappeared.“I haven’t seen or heard from him,” she said.Law originally told her he had plans to close on a house nearby. Then he claimed he had to fly across the country for a family emergency. The realtor of the home was the one to tell Cohagan that Law wasn’t actually buying the home. That’s when she noticed even more things were gone.“My grandmother’s wedding ring, a mother’s ring, pearls my father had given me,” she said.“She had about ,500 worth of items between her and her roommate that had been stolen,” Erie Police Department Commander Michael Haefele said.Now Erie PD are involved. They’ve been able to track Law and the missing items to multiple local pawn shops.“We were able to get a signed arrest warrant for the suspect in the case,” Haefele said.“He had been taking and pawning my things since pretty much two weeks in,” Cohagan added. “I think he’s a sociopath. I think he’s a con artist.”She said that she’s spoken to at least two other women who say they dated Law. The stories of falling in love and being ripped off were similar.Police do not know where Law is at the moment. The warrant for his arrest is out, and local towns and law enforcement agencies are aware. Meanwhile, they have been able to locate some of Cohagan’s things including her cameras, expensive purses, and a watch.
