The U.S. government is officially investigating Facebook.The Federal Trade Commission confirmed in a statement Monday that it is currently investigating Facebook data practices as the company faces new scrutiny from the Cambridge Analytica scandal."The FTC takes very seriously recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook," said Tom Pahl, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. That ranks sixth in the world and in the company of countries like Spain (65.27) and Mexico (58.24)The U.S. also leads the world with 6.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19. India (5.5 million), Brazil (4.5 million) and Russia (1.1 million) are the only other countries with at least 1 million confirmed cases of the virus.Johns Hopkins reports that daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 dropped throughout the month of August. The Salt Lake Tribune reported late Monday night that at least one person has died in a 'shots fired' incident on the University of Utah's campus. According to the university, it asked those on campus to "shelter in place" Monday night as authorities looked for the gunman, and other possible victims. Traffic was reportedly blocked off, and mass transit was shut down in the immediate vicinity of the shooting. The suspect is said to be 24-year-old Austin J. Boutain, who was wearing a coat, jeans and beanie, with a teardrop tattoo on his face. Friday's action is certain to be challenged in court by LGBTQ groups and others.The policy shift, long-sought by the president’s religious and socially conservative supporters, defines gender as a person’s biological sex. The Obama regulation defined gender as a person’s internal sense of being male, female, neither, or a combination.The Trump administration said that the new rules come with a .9 billion budget reduction over the course of five years. The Secret Service arrested a man near the White House on Monday, after they had been told to be on the lookout for a man who allegedly threatened to kill "all white police" there.Monday afternoon, police in Montgomery County, Maryland, alerted the US Secret Service that the man planned to go to Washington with the purpose of killing officers at the White House, according to a USSS statement. About an hour later, Secret Service officers spotted him on Pennsylvania Avenue near Lafayette Park, according to the statement. He was arrested without incident. Officials say charges are pending.The Secret Service's protective intelligence division was notified at about 2:55 p.m. ET to be on the lookout for Michael Arega of Dallas, who the Montgomery County Maryland Police Department said was heading to Washington for the purpose of killing "all white police" at the White House, according to the statement.
