SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Google is running a secret research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the tech giant invests to experiment and invent what may be world-changing technologies for the future, U.S. media reported on Monday.According to The New York Times, at the lab dubbed Google X, engineers are working at some 100 projects from robots, smart refrigerators to Internet-enabled dinner plates and a "space elevator," a proposed non-rocket space launch structure.An unnamed Google engineer familiar with the lab told the newspaper that it was run as mysteriously as the CIA with two officers, a nondescript one for logistics on the company's Mountain View campus and one for robots in a secret location.Scientists working at the lab include many roboticists and electrical engineers hired from Microsoft, Nokia labs, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon and New York University. Google's co-founder Sergey Brin is said to be "deeply involved" in Google X.The lab is reportedly headed by Sebastian Thrun, one of the world's top robotics and artificial intelligence experts. He teaches computer science at Stanford University and invented the world's first self-driving car.A Google spokeswoman would not confirm the existence of the lab, but said Google likes to invest in speculative projects."While the possibilities are incredibly exciting, please do keep in mind that the sums involved are very small by comparison to the investments we make in our core businesses," she told The New York Times.

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese commerce official said on Wednesday that the country will work to optimize the import mix of mechanical and electronic products so they can play a bigger role in China's restructuring efforts.Li Jinzao, vice minister of the Ministry of Commerce, made the remarks at a forum of the ongoing 13th "China Hi-Tech Fair" in Shenzhen.His remarks echoed a guideline issued in March on promoting the imports of mechanical and electronic products during the 2011-2015 period, in which China pledged efforts to encourage the imports of high-tech products.Li said that China will improve existing policies to attach more importance to the imports of advanced technology, equipment and components to spur innovation.Meanwhile, he said China will organize more trading events to exchange and cooperate with international businesses, and will continue to push the United States and European countries to ease restrictions on civil high-tech exports to China.

BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists are developing new methods like spraying or dropping hepatitis vaccines into people's noses to replace traditional injections, according to a leading expert on immunology.Such researches were sponsored by a key national science project, according to Wen Yumei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, also the chairwoman of the 14th International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease, which is scheduled to be held in Shanghai next July.At a press conference held here Friday for the symposium, experts believed that broad-coverage inoculations is an effective way in facilitating the country's goal in controlling Hepatitis B.China's Ministry of Health has also credited its national immunization program for having protected about 80 million people from being infected with the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the 19 years after 1992.Recent report showed that about 93 million Chinese are HBV carriers, accounting for more than a quarter of the world's total.
