(KGTV) - Escondido restaurant owners made the decision to stay open for indoor and outdoor dining after a court ruled Friday evening they must be take out only.On Grand Avenue, it looked like a time warp. People were back under tents and umbrellas eating and drinking on the patio and some indoors.At Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria, the sign in the window blinked "Open.""The restaurant business isn't something you can say hey close, open, close," Tony Pepperony Pizzeria Owner Joe Locricchio said.That's exactly what he's been dealing with for the last 10 months."We have livelihoods on the line... I have single mothers okay, they need to buy diapers. I have guys that haven't had a job and they're walking out of here with money every night in tips." Locricchio said his 80+ employees are like family.Staying open hasn't come without challenges.He said he was criminally cited by Alcoholic Beverage Control and issued a cease-and-desist order by the City of Escondido.His restaurant on Grand Avenue just opened 17 days ago.When asked what he had to say to critics who think he should close and are worried about the coronavirus killing San Diegans, he said, "listen, my heart goes out to everybody that's passed away, one death is too many. To those critics who have something to say about my decision, listen I respect their decision. I respect that they have the choice to not have to come here they don't have to support me, all I ask is to support my decision."He said strangers have yelled and ranted to him about his decision.He said what is more compelling, is how the community has shown their support, "it's been an overwhelming response. It makes my hair stand up, I'm going to be honest with you, the community has been unbelievable."Other restaurants are staying open too and Locricchio encourages more to follow their lead.This while hospitalizations continue to soar and health officials say it's safest to stay home.Locricchio said the choice is yours.He said the criminal citation means he could have his Liquor License temporarily taken away. Election season may be over, but two weeks after polls have closed, campaign signs still fill yards and roadways in much of the country.It's not uncommon to see political signs stand for a year after Election Day. And while the placards create plenty of visual litter, what's more concerning is the physical litter they can cause.Judith Enck, the President of Beyond Plastics says candidates need to take responsibility for their political signs."Lots of people who run for office run more than once," she said. "If they were in a two-year term, they're going to need signs in another two years, so they really should go out and collect the signs and store them somewhere and reuse them."Enck also says that because a candidate's campaign is already responsible for putting up the signs, they should also be responsible for taking them down after the election.She adds that most campaign signs aren't recyclable. While most signs used to be made entirely of cardboard, newer signs often now include a plastic coating. The coating protects the ink from sun, rain and snow, but also means candidates can't recycle signs after the election.Enck argues that in most cases, the plastic coating on a cardboard campaign is unnecessary."They pop up like mushrooms in the month of October, so I'm not sure that all that plastic coating is necessary," she said. "I would recommend to just go back to regular cardboard, and then you could actually recycle the signs."Enck adds that the metal posts that hold up campaign signs can be recycled, but they need to be separated from the signs and taken to scrap metal recycling centers. 1628

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County woman says she was scammed at a gas station by a performance 'worthy of an Oscar.'"We pull in and my husbands about to pump in the gas," said Alice. An ordinary trip to fill up turned eventful last month at the Shell gas station on Santa Fe Drive. "I see a man pull up in a black SUV, brand new and shiny," said Alice. Alice says a man in his 30s got out of the GMC Yukon and approached them."He was in head-to-toe designer clothes," said Alice. In the backseat was a well-dressed woman and a little girl."He says, 'Excuse me, Sir. I'm here vacationing from Dubai with my family and my wallet was stolen,'" said Alice. The man asked for some money for gas and then took out a ring."Here, take my ring. It's worth 0. I have money and plenty of jewelry at home. I just need money for gas and food," said Alice.Alice told the man to keep the ring and then had her husband put in on a pump with their credit card."I believed their story ... I put myself in their shoes. I would be devastated, and I would want someone to help me," said Alice.Days later, she learned from her cousin in Los Angeles those strangers were scammers. "I was the 4th person she knew of personally that this happened to. I was duped," said Alice."Then this past Wednesday, Alice was back at the gas station and filling up, when she saw something familiar," said Alice.It was another new GMC Yukon. Inside was a different family. She saw them talking with a young man, before pulling out a ring. "I ran over put my hand in front of the guy and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a scam!" said Alice. She learned the family had a similar story about vacationing from Dubai. The SUV sped off, leaving behind a woman hoping others don't fall victim."It makes me angry. It's the giving season and they take advantage of that. They're actors. They played their part perfectly. They're going to get an Oscars, and I handed them the award," said Alice.Alice believes both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. She says she contacted the sheriff's department but was told this incident would likely be defined as panhandling, which isn't a crime. 2184

Embattled Missouri Governor Eric Greitens announced on Tuesday he will resign over the scandals that have dominated his tenure.The Republican governor has been embroiled in scandal for weeks. Last month, a Missouri state House committee released a report alleging that Greitens subjected a woman to non-consensual sexual activity and violence. (KGTV) - Neighbors in Encinitas are warning people about the dangers of the Sago Palm after two dogs on the same street passed away from sago poisoning.Ronnie Steinau says her dog, Luna, died within 24 hours of eating some seeds from a Sago Palm."She was the happiest, tail wagging, loved everyone and 'she's the kind of dog that everyone loved because she was so sweet," Steinau says. "We had her for about a year. We miss her."After posting about Luna on social media groups, Steinau learned a neighbor had a similar experience."We had no idea there was something so deadly all around us," says Alissa Dalaut.Dalaut says her dog Saber ate some sago palm seeds in December and died a few days afterward, despite aggressive treatment from her vet."We felt horrible, and we wished we would have known how toxic and how fatal and how dangerous these plants are," says Dalaut.According to PetMD.com, the sago palm contains a toxin called Cycasin. It can cause severe liver damage. Other symptoms of sago poisoning include:VomitingBlood in fecesBloody diarrheaIcterus (yellow coloration of skin and gums)Increased thirstIncreased urineBruisingBleeding easily (coagulopathy, DIC)Neurological signs such as depression, circling, paralysis, seizures, comaDeathThe toxin is found in the sago roots, seeds and leaves. She has since had them all removed. Steinau also had a sago palm removed from her backyard and has plans to cut down another on her porch.Now the two women are warning others of the dangers in their neighborhood."If you have them in your yard and you have children or pets, you're asking for trouble," says Steinau.Steinau would also like nurseries to do a better job of telling people about the dangers associated with sago palms and other trees when they're sold.
