Cats are nature's fuzziest little killers. But sometimes pet owners don't want their dead prey to end up in the house. Enter Amazon engineer Ben Hamm. Hamm is the owner of a “sweet, murderous cat” named Metric, who is fond of killing birds and bringing them inside. Metric is the reason Hamm learned to code. He initially got the fuzzball to help with a rat infestation problem."He turned out to be a pitiless, unrelenting serial killer," the engineer said in jest during a presentation at 502

DENVER — On World Autism Awareness Day Tuesday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill that expands medical marijuana use. Advocates have been fighting for two years to add autism to a list of qualifying medical conditions in Colorado.“I definitely believe it’s going to help kids for many reasons," said Michelle Walker, a parent of an autistic child who has other conditions that qualified him for medical marijuana. "One of the biggest reasons is I’ve seen it. I’ve seen my son’s life change. I’ve seen our family’s life change. It’s done a 180, and we’re not the only ones."Walker and her family moved to Colorado for the sole reason of obtaining medical marijuana for her son. He was able to start using medical marijuana to treat his seizures but said she also noticed a difference in his overall behavior."So I know it is an option for others and that it can be a beneficial option," Walker said.Walker and other families were at the Colorado State Capitol last year when a similar bill was vetoed. Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper did not sign off on the bill because he said more research was needed."It was heartbreaking," she said. "I cried, and my son has access, but to look in these families eyes after they had fought so hard, it was crushing."Those parents cried happy tears when Polis signed the bill on Tuesday. Jackie Bess brought her son Jackson to the governor's office to take part in the celebration. She hopes the move will help normalize the use of medical marijuana for autism ensuring parents will be able to talk about it with their child's doctor."Right now doctors won’t talk to us about it," Bess said. "Definitely, it will help other families."Bess and Walker agree that medical marijuana might not be the right solution for all kids with autism, but they believe families should have the option to try it."We’re not saying medical marijuana for anyone, anything," Bess said. "We’re saying autism is special and it requires some more tools in our toolbox," 2008

Congress will approve a total of 5 million in election security funding, according to two sources familiar with the deal. The money, which comes in the appropriations bill set to be released Monday, is a compromise: significantly higher than the 0 million Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had 316

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Wednesday that the "breaking point has arrived this week" for the US immigration system.Speaking from El Paso, Texas, the head of the US border security agency said that on Monday, CBP encountered the highest total number of migrants in years, with more than 4,000 in a single day, the vast majority of which were apprehensions of people illegally crossing the border. That number was broken again on Tuesday.McAleenan said the agency is on pace to apprehend and encounter "over 100,000" migrants this month. Ninety percent of those are expected to be for illegal border crossings."March will be the highest month since 2008," he said.In March 2019 alone, almost 40,000 children will come into CBP's custody, McAleenan said, adding that the "potential for a tragic incident" during a border crossing or in overwhelmed agency facilities is "clear and present."He said the danger increases as the weather gets hotter. In December, two Guatemalan children have died after they were detained with their fathers after crossing the border. For months, administration officials have been warning that the changing demographics -- more families, children and a majority of Central American arriving -- were causing strain on resources, but the overall numbers of people arriving at the border are now set to reach levels not seen in a decade. The last time the monthly number of border arrests was above 90,000 was in the spring of 2008. During the unaccompanied minor crisis of 2014, the highest monthly total number reached 61,357."This stark and increasing shift to more vulnerable populations, combined with the overwhelming numbers, and inadequate capacity to detain families and children at ICE and Health and Human Services, respectively, is creating a humanitarian crisis," said McAleenan.CBP is taking over 60 migrants to the hospital each day and is encountering people with severe medical conditions, according to the commissioner. For instance, in the past four days, CBP has seen infants with fevers of 105 degrees and a 2-year-old suffering from seizures in the desert. 2146

Diaper maker Pampers recently announced an initiative to install 5,000 changing tables in hopes of making changing tables more accessible for dads. The lack of public changing tables in men's rooms became a national issue last year when Donte Palmer of Florida posted a video online that went viral showing him squatting while trying to change his child's diaper. Pampers said Palmer is involved in its project.According to a study cited by Pampers, 9 out of 10 dads have gone into a public restroom and not been able to change their child's diapers. Pampers' goal is to have the 5,000 changing tables installed throughout North America by 2021. Pampers said in a statement that it is working with Koala Kare to identify 5,000 high-need locales for changing tables. Pampers said it will be targeting places such as parks and recreation centers, community centers and libraries. Pampers said it has already identified 500 locations, and those locations will have their changing tables installed in the coming weeks. “We know that dads want to be able to bond with their children by taking them out and about, and that means the inevitable diaper-duty no matter where they are. In many instances today, instead of it being an easy, straightforward task it’s a moment that causes angst because the facilities needed are not always available,” said Andre Schulten, Vice President and General Manager Baby Care North America, Procter & Gamble. “We are proud to announce our commitment to provide 5,000 changing tables for installation in public restrooms by 2021 to help address the inequality hands-on dads face when it comes to taking care of their babies.” 1669
