"Can a doctor really properly diagnose the dehydration over tele-medicine?"Flynn says Telehealth is great for those over the age of 40, who know and understand their bodies. Health officials in Santa Clara County, California, say that they have traced 94 cases of COVID-19 to a youth basketball tournament that took place illegally at a nearby indoor sports complex last month.According to CNN, Courtside Basketball Center in Rocklin, California — located northwest of Sacramento — hosted a "Fall Fest" tournament on Nov. 7 and 8 that featured several teams and dozens of players and coaches.On Friday, The Mercury News reported that a total of 94 cases of COVID-19 — including 77 in Santa Clara County alone — could be traced back to the tournament.The Mercury News says the outbreak includes 39 "middle- and high school players," three coaches and 35 additional contacts."This outbreak is a troubling reminder that the widespread prevalence of COVID-19 in our community threatens all of us, and does not limit itself to geographic boundaries," Santa Clara County's assistant public health officer, Dr. Monika Roy, said in a statement.The California Department of Public Health said in a release that is has opened an "enforcement investigation" into the tournament's operator.CNN reported last month that the Courtside Basketball Center's website included a note that urged anyone who was in attendance for the tournament to get tested for the virus, "regardless of whether they have symptoms."As of last month, CNN reports that the complex had hoped to host four more basketball tournaments by the end of the year. The center's website now says it is "closed until further notice."Santa Clara County — which is located south of San Francisco and is home to the city of San Jose — has among the strictest COVID-19 restrictions in the country. Hospital nurses in Philadelphia are ready to go on strike amid a surge of coronavirus cases across the country, according to the union. The union said in a statement that 800 members of the union at St. Mary Medical Center are planning to picket on Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the main sticking points is minimum staffing levels, which is the proportion of patients to nurses in a hospital.“Safe staffing is the main issue in our negotiation--it's why we organized last year in the first place,” says Kathy McKamey R.N., who works on St Mary's MG2 unit and has been at the hospital for 10 years, said in a statement provided by the union. “Trinity has refused to commit to the minimal safe staffing guidelines every study out there has said improve patient outcomes. But the truth is, even if they had, we don't have the staff to fill them because our wage scale is so far below that of area hospitals. Nurses are literally fleeing to other hospitals 20 minutes away where they can make to more an hour. My unit alone has lost 20 nurses since January; the perioperative areas have lost 35 nurses in the last year. The grids are meaningless if you can't find nurses to fill the spots."Adding to nurses’ concern is the possibility of having to report to work while infected with the coronavirus. Here in the U.S., states are handling vaccine distribution in different ways.Most are going with health care workers in direct contact with COVID-19 patients first, but plans could change.“So, we need to set realistic expectations that there will be guidance that's different in different states. The guidance will evolve as we get more and more vaccines. And that doesn't mean anything's wrong or we've changed our minds, it’s just the way it's going to roll out,” said Stacy Hall, Director of Louisiana’s Public Health Immunization Program.Louisiana plans to let its hospitals and EMS distribute the first doses to their staffs. It’s a strategy not just to protect the valuable workers, but to hopefully get the public on board.“I'm really eager for them as the first group to really learn the science about the vaccine and step up and be vaccinated. I think that'll set our whole campaign in Louisiana and nationally on the right track,” said Hall.As for the cold storage of the vaccine, Louisiana doesn't see it as overly challenging.They also plan to use the state immunization information system to track who needs second doses and where the vaccine is being used most.“I want us to keep going back to that.
