OTAY MESA (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday released the names of a 70-year- old man and the two San Diego police officers who shot him in Otay Valley Regional Park in Otay Mesa when he allegedly pulled out a handgun that turned out to be a replica.Around 6 a.m. Thursday, Officers Jeremy Huff and Filip Perry from the Neighborhood Policing Division were in the park, near the 500 block of Beyer Way, to conduct an outreach and cleanup operation in conjunction with other city agencies when they encountered Carlos Soto, who was staying in an illegal encampment, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department."When officers approached the man, he produced a handgun," Brown said. "Officers gave the man commands to get on the ground. (KGTV) -- The mother of one of the 15 Marines injured in a fiery training accident at Camp Pendleton said she panicked when she learned her son was one of the wounded.RELATED: Officials: 15 Marines injured in Camp Pendleton training accident“It made my heart hurt to see him for sure, you know, with his face all burnet and knowing how bad burns hurt,” said J.R. They stood there all night. They never leave him alone,” she said.Samuel Koontz posted on Facebook he has second and third-degree burns to his face but won’t have permanent scars.He wrote the vehicle, also called a Track, “Exploded and the track caught fire, me and my squad exited out multiple ways some being injured more than others. Me and some of my squad mates got out and went back to pull the rest of our brothers out that couldn’t do it for themselves for various reasons.”He also asks people to pray for the Marines still hospitalized and some badly injured.“it’s just kind of a traumatic thing I think when you go through something like that,” J.R. Koontz said. “I believe they put all the guys that were hurt in the accident in the wounded warrior battalion so that gives them time to go over what happened."The Marine Corps is not paying the flights and hotel stays for the families visiting the injured Marines. (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the COVID-related death of an Oceanside grandfather who worked security on the Sprinter train.Matthys Kemp, 67, first became sick around mid-September."A cough and fever. Just thought he was coming down with a bug," said daughter Rinali HillNot long after, his symptoms got worse. Hill says on September 20th, he ended up in the ER."They admitted him. He had double pneumonia and COVID," said Hill.After two weeks on oxygen, Kemp was placed on a ventilator and sedated. He developed a blood clot in his leg and kidney issues.On November 1, Kemp, a father of two and grandfather of three, passed away."Just glad he's not in pain anymore," said a tearful Hill.Hill says her father was kind, generous and well-liked."He definitely had a huge smile and huge heart for everybody," said Hill.Hill says Kemp worked with the North County Transit District for the past decade, including the last five years for the contractor that provides security on the Sprinter train."He loved his job. Felt like he had a purpose, showing up every day in his vest. Felt like it was his Superman cape. Took pride in getting people to their destinations," said Hill.Hill isn't sure where her father contracted the virus, but says he was diligent about wearing a mask at work.His long-held wish, known to his family for years, was to have his body donated to science. Hill says when she reached out to local research facilities, they say it wouldn't be possible because of his COVID-19 diagnosis."That’s what he wanted and unfortunately we couldn’t do that for him," said Hill.Hill is now sharing her father's story, urging others to take precautions."Please wear a mask ... This virus can leave behind a family that can’t say goodbye in person, couldn't get hold their hand. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up early Saturday morning for the Oceanside half-Ironman. The race is a total of 70.3 miles of biking, swimming and running. For one local Camp Pendleton marine, the race meant so much more. Captain John Watkins participated in the Ironman in memory of his daughter, Amelia Mae Watkins, also known as Millie. Millie passed away when she was just 10-years-old from neuroblastoma last year. Since Millie's death, her family raises money to raise awareness about her specific type of cancer. The Watkins raised over ,000 dollars for this race.
