SHANGHAI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Austrian President Heinz Fischer here on Friday expressed his confidence in the success of the Shanghai World Expo and expectation for further economic and trade cooperation between his country and China.The Expo would have profound influences on the social, economic and culture development of the host city Shanghai, Fischer said in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng.Austria hosted the 1873 World Expo.Fischer said Austria would actively participate in the Expo and Austrian Federal Chancellor Werner Faymann was expected to attend the opening ceremony.Despite the financial crisis, China was the only market of Austria that saw an increase in export volume in 2009, said Fischer.He called for further cooperation in such areas as economy, culture, science and sports.Austria's statistics showed that the trade volume of its export to China recorded a year-on-year increase of 5 percent in 2009, while China's customs said China-Austria trade hit 4.33 billion U.S. dollars from January to November last year.China has now become Austria's largest trading partner in Asia, and second largest outside the Europe and the fourth largest exporters to Austria in the world.Fischer arrived in Shanghai Thursday, or the 100-day countdown to the opening of the Expo. BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The recent number of earthquakes above 7-magnitude in 2010, though slightly more than average, was still within normal scope, said the China Earthquake Administration Monday.The administration cited that the frequency of the quakes were uneven. "It is a normal phenomenan of earth movement," it said.Some panicked netizens linked the recent spate of earthquakes to Doomsday Day as depicted by Hollywood disaster film "2012" shown in 2009.China is an earthquake-prone country, witnessing a total of 145 quakes on average on the mainland each year, with 20 quakes above 5 magnitude.

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- A severe drought has affected 69.6 million Mu (about 4.64 million hectares) of arable land and left 12.7 million people and 8.4 million livestock short of drinking water, said China's drought relief authorities Saturday.The figures nearly doubled the average level for corresponding periods over the past years, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.The drought had caused huge losses and serious drinking water shortages in the affected areas, said Liu Ning, vice minister of water resources.Local governments have put 750 million yuan (110 million U.S. dollars) and mobilized nearly 9 million people to cope with the draught, which temporarily helped 7.4 million people and 3.6 million livestock out of drinking water shortages, Liu said.He called for prompt allocation of more relief funds from the central government and more efforts to ensure drinking water safety and spring irrigation.The dry spell started last autumn and has hit southwest, south and part of north China. The seriousness, duration, areas affected and losses are rarely seen in history, said the Ministry of Civil Affairs Friday.Severe drought would continue to ravage the already hard-stricken southwest China as no major rainfalls are expected in the next three days, the China Meteorological Administration warned Saturday.

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior Syrian official underlined on Sunday the importance of cooperation with China, especially in the fields of agriculture and food security.Talking to Xinhua on the sidelines of a joint Afro-Arab ministerial meeting, Nabi Rasheed, an aide to the Syrian minister of agriculture, said his country pays much attention to cooperation with China on agriculture and food security and looks forward to more joint projects in this regard."Syria and China cooperate with each other in the long term through the exchange of delegations and training programs. A high- level Chinese delegation led by the agriculture minister has visited us recently, when we discussed opportunities and means to boost agricultural cooperation. Syria will also take part in the 2010 Shanghai EXPO," the Syrian official said.Rasheed who headed his country's delegation to the Joint Afro- Arab Ministerial Meeting on Agricultural Development and Food Security which kicked off on Sunday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, said the current meeting has attached greater importance due to the drought which haunts many Arab and African countries and the global financial crisis.The recent food crisis caused the prices of many food stuff to ratchet up and the global financial crisis forced many countries to cut funds allocated to agricultural development, said the official."I hope the meeting will lay a concrete foundation stone for cooperation between Arab and African states at this vital stage," he said.The Syrian official added that the meetings aim to establish a common Arab-African strategy on agriculture and food security, pointing out that there is a plan to set up a follow-up, steering and coordination body along with a special fund to support the implementation of decisions to be sanctioned by the ministers.Rasheed added that his country has already taken tangible steps on food security, "Syria has successfully made food security years ago thanks to governmental policies and its support for the agricultural sector.""We have achieved this goal," he said, yet adding his country still faces challenges due to the recent drought which is the worst in 50 years.
