TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Attorneys for a former state health employee whose home was raided earlier this month have filed a lawsuit against the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, saying the Dec. 7 execution of a search warrant "was a sham to punish" her for not altering COVID-19 data.The 19-page lawsuit, filed Sunday in Leon County court, is seeking damages and a jury trial on behalf of Rebekah Jones."They entered her home with guns drawn, terrorizing her family," attorneys for Jones said in the lawsuit against the FDLE and Commissioner Rick Swearingen.The lawsuit alleges that Jones' "termination from the Florida Department of Health after refusing to falsify data generated a great deal of media coverage, much to the dismay of the state."In the hours after the raid, Jones posted a 31-second video clip on her Twitter account that showed her opening the door as agents made their way inside with their guns drawn. Sunshine Mills, Inc. is voluntarily recalling some dog food products because levels of a mold by-product are potentially above the acceptable limit.Aflatoxin naturally occurs from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities, according to the Food and Drug Administration.No health issues have been reported at this time. The potential for elevated levels of Aflatoxin was discovered during routine sampling done by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.The recall affects Family Pet meaty cuts beef, chicken and cheese flavors, Heartland Farms grilled favorites beef, chicken and cheese flavor, and Paws Happy Life butcher’s choice dog food.Symptoms include lethargy or sluggishness, a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to eyes or gums or diarrhea.The products were distributed nationwide in retail stores. The American Academy of Pediatrics said 61,000 children in the United States tested positive for COVID-19 last week.The medical professionals said the new child cases reported is the highest weekly figure since the pandemic began. The cases were reported in a one-week period that ended Oct. 29.The organization said that since the pandemic began up to Oct. 29, more than 853,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus. During October, nearly 200,000 new cases in children were reported by state health departments, who track the data"This is a stark reminder of the impact this pandemic is having on everyone – including our children and adolescents," said AAP President Sally Goza, MD, FAAP said in a press release. "This virus is highly contagious, and as we see spikes in many communities, children are more likely to be infected, too. The ACT, the standardized test used for college admissions, has a backlog of scores that still have not gone out to students, and it is causing some to miss out on applying to schools and scholarships.“There’s a lot of anxiety riding on it,” said Sarah Horner, whose daughter, Riley, who hopes to go to the University of Illinois next year. “I’ve watched her get all excited to take [the ACT], and [now] she’s just done, and that’s how a lot of the kids are.”As a senior in high school, Horner is waiting on scores from her ACT, a test she was scheduled to take in April but was not able to until June.“It’s been very tough watching her struggle,” said Horner “And it’s not just me. There are parents all over the United States that are just as upset about this.”Once COVID hit, ACT tests were canceled and rescheduled for the summer. At the same time, the ACT had scheduled to launch a new website feature that overloaded its system and caused it to crash.For parents and students who typically receive scores within two to three weeks of the test, it left them scrambling to find recourse.“It’s devastating. Yes, it is honestly devastating,” said Cecilia Walker, whose son, Seth, was supposed to take the test in March but was rescheduled for July.“It’s pretty much universal,” Seth Walker said. “All of my friends are having the same issues of getting hung up on by the ACT.”Walker is confident he will get into Auburn University.
