ROME (AP) — After months in a Rome jail, a trial has begun for a pair of schoolmates from California who are accused of murdering an Italian policeman during vacation in Italy. The first hearing, held Wednesday, is expected to deal with procedural manners. “Nationwide it's been hitting pretty hard,” Dr. Suchitra Rao. a Pediatric Infectious Disease Doctor at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said.This flu season, however, doctors are seeing something unusual.“It’s a very unusual type of year in terms of the virus we’re seeing,” Dr. Rao said. “We’ve been seeing a lot of Influenza B activity.”Typically, the flu season will start off with one or two waves of Influenza A and end with Influenza B, but this year, that’s not the case.“Influenza B tends to be more deadly or more virulent in the very young or the very old,” Dr. Steve Feagins, the Medical Director at Hamilton County Public Health in Ohio, said.Across the country, kids have been getting sick, causing irreversible damage, or death.A 16-year-old girl in Dallas died last week from flu complications. She was a healthy, active teenager in her junior year of high school.Another 4-year-old girl in Iowa came down with the flu, and it left her blind. The illness caused Jade Phillips’ brain to swell, affecting her vision.The Center for Disease Control reported a total of 32 flu-related pediatric deaths this season, double compared to this time last year. Twenty-one were associated with Influenza B, and five of those were due to a specific strain called B/Victoria.Dr. Rao said this is the highest number they’ve seen this early in the flu season over the last 17 years.“Of those kids who are being hospitalized, they tend to have a more severe illness,” Dr. Rao said. “So we are seeing a lot more kids end up in the ICU this time of year compared to what we might be seeing in previous years.”It’s important to be aware -- especially in children and older adults -- because the type of flu is not always obvious.“You can’t really differentiate one type from the other in terms of how people are feeling,” Dr. Rao said.Both doctors say the flu shot can help. A 20-year-old Bangladeshi woman gave birth to twins -- 26 days after giving birth to her first child.Arifa Sultana gave birth to a boy in late February, according to Dr. Sheila Poddar, a gynecologist at Ad-Din hospital in Dhaka. After a normal delivery, the mother and baby were released from a different Dhaka hospital. Less than four weeks later, she was admitted to Ad-Din hospital."She came to the hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain," Poddar said. Doctors performed an ultrasound and realized Sultana was pregnant with twins.Sultana had two uteruses, a condition called uterus didelphys. Her first baby and the twins were conceived and grown in separate wombs.She did not get an ultrasound before the first delivery, so it was missed, Poddar said."It is not very common to have two uteruses. When the uterus develops, it comes from two tubes, and those tubes fuse together. For some women, the fusion does not occur, and the dividing wall does not dissolve," said Dr. S.N. Basu, head of obstetrics and gynecology at Max Healthcare hospital in New Delhi.Poddar was able to quickly perform a C-section to deliver twins: a boy and a girl. "All three children are safe and healthy," Poddar said. "The mother is also fine."A uterus didelphys is a rare congenital abnormality, and the occurrence of twin gestation has an overall incidence rate of 1 in a million, according to the National Institutes of Health.For it not to be discovered before the birth is even less common."From rural areas, people don't know what is wrong with them. A Buffalo Public School student’s mother wants answers after she says her son’s teacher dragged him down several stairs. “She was dragging him down the stairs by his knees,” said Tasha Dixon. Dixon says she didn’t witness what happened but someone else did, prompting an internal investigation by the district. “I had received a call from the principal and she said my son had been involved in an incident.” She says her son Malik is in a 611 class, which is for special education students. She says Malik also has a disability. “He asked her to go to the bathroom and she told him no because she felt he didn’t need to go. He sat down and she insisted he move so she took him by the legs and thumped him down a couple stairs.” Dixon says she met with the school principal, who she says indicated an eyewitness came forward to administrators about what happened. During that meeting she says she was told since it happened in a hallway, cameras captured the event, however; she was not allowed to see the video because it is property of the district. “In a closed meeting she said it wasn’t a good video,” Dixon said. “How can you have the audacity to touch my son?” A spokesperson for Buffalo Schools says the district did a month-long investigation and found the claims against the teacher unfounded.
