(KGTV) - A couple in San Diego are spending the holiday telling everyone they know to register as an organ donor."People don't like to talk about their death, but rather than bury these organs or burn them up, you can save lives," says Nancy Marlin, who is recovering from a kidney transplant.Marlin had a genetic kidney disease and would have needed dialysis if not for the donation. Her new kidney came from a co-worker."I was so fortunate," says says. "Someone gave me the most amazing gift."It's a gift her family knows well. Marlin's husband, Fred Kolkhorst, had a heart transplant just 18 months ago after being diagnoses with heart failure."It changes you immensely in ways that are difficult to describe," he says.Kolkhorst and Marlin are rare in that they're a married couple who have both received donated organs. Sharp Memorial Hospital Transplant Coordinator Tammy Wright says she can't think of any couples in her 25 years in the field.Wright says the holidays are the perfect time for families to talk about their wishes in regards to organ donations."It's a time of giving," she says. "The simple thing is to tell your family what your wishes are. If they know what your wishes are, they usually will follow that if something does happen."Wright also says to consider being a living donor for organs like kidneys, which have an 8-12 year wait list for donors."The simple act of saying 'yes' can make somebody live," she says.More information on organ donation can be found here. 1520

SAN DIEO (KGTV) - Parole agents checked on child sex offenders Thursday night to ensure they were in compliance, as part of the 26th Annual Operation Boo.10News rode along with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Agents who went knocking on 7 doors Halloween night."The gates were closed, the lights were turned off, they kind of know what is expected of them," Parole Agent Matthew Holmes said.Some of the stops took us to National City, City Heights, even a marina where a house boat was docked."Most of the time they're compliant, occasionally somebody has to go back to jail, but we just try to hold them accountable for their conditions," Holmes said.That means no alcohol, drugs, weapons, or pornography.Thursday night everyone checked out.One parolee told 10News he's excited to take the next step after his release, "I feel fantastic, the program is great, State Parole is great. It's definitely worth it. I think all this tax payers expense, they're getting their money's worth, I'll tell you that."Operation Boo is just a small part of agents' role of checking in on parolees. Wednesday five parolees were arrested for being out of compliance. 1181

He said joining the Navy is essentially in his blood after his dad and uncles came to the United States from the Philippines, joining the Navy and raising him in a structured military way.“He just exposed me to a lot of aviation growing up, so going to the Miramar Air Show pretty much almost every year was one of them and just being in San Diego you have an airplane flying over you every three minutes, so I always looked up and said okay, I want to do that,” said Velunta.He said he wanted to take his goals one step further.“I wanted to raise the bar and be the first commissioned officer in the family,” said Velunta.So, he did. Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, he graduated from Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. He had to complete 13 weeks of both physical and mental training. Next, he’ll be heading to Pensacola, FL for aviation training, set to become a Navy pilot.“It is pretty insane because this has been a childhood dream for me and to say yes I’m fulfilling my childhood dream is not something most people can say, so it’s exciting for me to be in this position,” he said. 1196

But with Toys R Us no longer in the picture, retailers are finding unique ways to cash in on the billion-dollar industry. Kids will always be drawn to play and make-believe. But for parents, it’s about helping Santa get the deals.“He loves to jump. He loves to run," Chedna Patin said. "So I think this will be a great play station for my baby,” she said while pointing at a piano toy.Patin said this year, she and her husband are buying their son’s holiday toys at a big box store.“Sam’s Club is majorly for groceries, buying bulk. But now as they are increasing their toy collection, I think for parents, it’s a good thing," Patin said. In fact, her one-year-old son Viann’s entire nursery came out of a Toys R Us catalog. But since the toy giant filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, she had to look elsewhere.Since 1948, Toys R Us has dominated the toy market-- last year claiming almost 5% of the .4 billion industry.  Now that they are gone, retailers like Sam's Club saw an opportunity.“We have added about 70 new toys this holiday season," Sam's Club member experience manager, Victor Aguilar said. “We have way more toys than before, that way [parents are] not running around everywhere trying to get their toys. So they can do a one-stop-shop here, buy their food, clothes, toys. They get everything.”Like their “try then buy” food model, Sam's Club is offering toy demonstrations for the first time, ever."We want kids to interact with them, and ask Santa for that gift," Aguilar said. "Or so parents can make sure if the product meets their children's needs."Demonstrations are a strategy to beat out online stores, which now amount to 13% of the holiday retail market.Small, independent toy stores, on the other hand, have another strategy. Chika Sasaki owns Gunnzo, a Japanese toy store in Old Town. Instead of offering the same toys as everyone else, she seeks specialty items.“We always try to have some niche stuff that Toys R Us doesn’t have or a bigger toy store, so it didn’t really affect us," Sasaki said. Whatever the strategy, one thing is for sure.
