Safety-wise, there’s a lot riding on your tires. But many car owners don’t routinely inspect the rubber they are riding on or know what to look for.“Tires are what connects us to the road, and if they are worn, that will reduce your car’s stability and traction,” says David Bennett, AAA’s manager of repair systems.Here are five situations where experts say changes in your driving conditions, tire wear or damage are common — and easy ways to make your tires last as long as possible.1. You moved to a new place with a different climateIf you’ve recently moved from, for example, Southern California to Colorado, your driving conditions are now vastly different. And switching to winter tiresmight be in your future.But don’t wait for the first storm. If your car starts to swap ends, or spin, that’s “not a fun way to discover that you need different tires,” says Matt Edmonds, executive vice president of online retailer Tire Rack.Ask your new neighbors, or an expert at a tire store, what the locals use to stay safe on the roads. Or you can use an online tire guide and user reviews to choose new tires.2. You hit a pothole, nail or curbWhile you’re checking your tires’ pressure — which you should do at least once each month — run your hand over the tread surface to see if there are any nails stuck in the tire or cuts in the tread or sidewall, Bennett says.If you find a nail, don’t pull it out or you might wind up with a flat tire. Instead, drive to a tire repair shop and get them to pull out the nail and, if necessary, patch it.Often, tires are damaged by running over a pothole or rubbing against a curb while parking, Edmonds says. Look for bubbles or bulges that could indicate a developing problem and result in a high-speed blowout. Damage on the inside of the tire is harder to spot and might require a trip to a tire store for an expert’s inspection.3. Your tires are losing tractionTires that have lost all or most of their tread can feel fine while driving in dry conditions. But once rain or snow hits, they lose traction and braking distances increase, Bennett says.To measure tread depth, insert a quarter into the tread in the center of the tire with George Washington’s head pointing toward the tire. If the tread obscures the top of his head, your tires are in good shape.If the top of Washington’s head is even with the tread, the tires are still safe to drive on, but it’s time to start shopping for new ones, Bennett says.4. You hear tire noise, feel vibration or ‘pulling’These are all indicators that something is wrong either with your tires or, in some cases, with the alignment of your front wheels. As the tread wears, tires can become noisy, according to Edmonds.Tires that wear unevenly can cause a vibration through the car, which is commonly felt through the steering wheel. The car is pulling when it doesn’t track straight, slowly wandering either left or right. This is often caused by misaligned front wheels.5. You bought your tires more than six years agoRubber dries out over time, and even if there’s still plenty of tread, the sidewalls can crack.The date the tires were manufactured is printed on the sidewall and is usually preceded by DOT for the Department of Transportation. The first two numbers stand for the week in the year it was made, and the other two are for the year. For example, if your tire has “1109” printed on it, then it was manufactured in the 11th week of 2009.Edmonds says that tires should not be in continual service for more than six years or, if a car was garaged for extended periods, 10 years from the manufacturer date.Tire care basicsTires are expensive, but if you maintain them correctly, most tires provide reliable service for up to 60,000 miles. Here’s how to keep your tires in good condition so you can drive safely:Buy a tire gauge and pump. Tire gauges typically cost less than . And instead of inflating at crowded gas stations, buy a battery-operated inflation pump for less than and do it at home.Locate your tire pressure level. The correct tire pressure level is usually listed on the yellow sticker often found in the driver’s side door jam.Check your tire pressure at least once a month. To get an accurate reading, check your tires in the morning before you drive anywhere. Tires heat up when you drive on them, and this throws off the inflation amount.Don’t forget your spare tire. Inflate your spare tire if you have one. Many cars now are sold without a spare but have an inflation pump and a can of tire sealant that will, in an emergency, both inflate and seal the leak in your tire.Check your temperature. For every 10 degrees the outside temperature drops, a tire’s pressure will decrease by one pound per square inch. So, if you haven’t adjusted your tire pressure since the summer, you could be riding on underinflated tires that won’t handle as well, will wear more quickly and reduce your fuel economy.Rotate your tires regularly. Doing this will make sure your tires wear evenly and last longer. Ritzy Los Angeles County suburbs.They all could be the next Paradise.A McClatchy analysis reveals more than 350,000 Californians live in towns and cities that exist almost entirely within "very high fire hazard severity zones" — Cal Fire's designation for places highly vulnerable to devastating wildfires. These designations have proven eerily predictive about some of the state's most destructive wildfires in recent years, including the Camp Fire, the worst in state history.RELATED: Governor Gavin Newsom lays out plan for wildfire preventionNearly all of Paradise is colored in bright red on Cal Fire's map — practically the entire town was at severe risk before the Camp Fire raged through last November, burning the majority of homes in its path and killing 85 people.Malibu, where the Woolsey Fire burned more than 400 homes last year, also falls within very high hazard zones. As does the small Lake County town of Cobb, much of which was destroyed by the Valley Fire in 2015."There's a lot of Paradises out there," said Max Moritz, a fire specialist at UC Santa Barbara.RELATED: Wet winters no longer reduce wildfire risk in California, report claimsAll told, more than 2.7 million Californians live in very high fire hazard severity zones, from trailers off quiet dirt roads in the forest to mansions in the state's largest cities, according to the analysis, which is based on 2010 block-level census data. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says its maps show places where wildfires are likely to be extreme due to factors including vegetation and topography.The maps aren't perfect in their ability to forecast where a fire will be destructive. For instance, the Coffey Park neighborhood of Santa Rosa isn't in a very high hazard zone, but powerful winds pushed the Tubbs Fire into that part of the city, largely leveling the neighborhood in October 2017.Coffey Park was built "with zero consideration for fire," said Chris Dicus, a forestry and fire expert at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In the meantime, experts say the current maps, created about a decade ago, still provide an important guide to predict where wildfires could do the most damage, in the same way floodplain maps highlight areas that could be hit hardest during severe storms.The at-risk communities identified by McClatchy also should serve as a starting point for prioritizing how California should spend money on retrofits and other fire-safety programs, Moritz said.California's state-of-the-art building codes help protect homes from wildfire in the most vulnerable areas, experts say. But the codes only apply to new construction. A bill introduced by Assemblyman Jim Wood would provide cash to help Californians retrofit older homes."This will go a long way toward these different municipalities (in showing) that they deserve funding," Moritz said.McClatchy identified more than 75 towns and cities with populations over 1,000 where, like Paradise, at least 90 percent of residents live within the Cal Fire "very high fire hazard severity zones." 3555

(AP) — A jury on Monday recommended the death penalty for a Southern California man convicted of killing a family of four with a sledgehammer and burying their bodies in shallow desert graves.Jurors in San Bernardino made the recommendation for Charles "Chase" Merritt, 62, in a case that puzzled investigators for years after a couple and their two young sons vanished from their home in 2010. Their bodies were found three years later.Merritt supported his head on his fists and closed his eyes as the verdicts were read. He also spoke briefly to his attorney.He was convicted this month of the murders of his former business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer, and their 4- and 3-year-old sons, Gianni and Joseph Jr.Merritt had pleaded not guilty and his lawyers didn't offer witnesses during the penalty phase of his trial, insisting he is innocent.San Bernardino County Superior Court Judge Michael A. Smith set a Sept. 27 hearing to formally sentence Merritt. He thanked the jurors after the verdicts were read, saying he knew the decision was "extremely difficult."Authorities said they believed Merritt killed the family as McStay was cutting him out of his business making and selling custom water fountains. When the family disappeared, there were no signs of forced entry at their San Diego County home and their car was found parked at a strip mall near the Mexico border.For years, no one could figure out what happened to them. In 2013, their bodies were found in shallow graves in the desert after an off-road motorcyclist discovered skeletal remains in the area. Authorities also unearthed a rusty sledgehammer that they said was used to kill the family.Merritt was arrested the following year. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the area of the desert graves in the days after the family disappeared and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account. Merritt also had referred to McStay in the past tense during an interview with investigators.Authorities concede the case against Merritt largely focused on circumstantial evidence and that questions remain about what happened at the McStay home.During the trial's penalty phase, prosecutor Britt Imes asked jurors to consider any possible motive for the killing of two young boys, whether they could have been witnesses to the murder of their parents or simply victims of callous killings."There is no motive that can be ascribed to the killer of a 4-year-old and a 3-year-old that passes muster," he said.Merritt's attorneys didn't call any witnesses during the penalty phase, instead appealing to any lingering doubts jurors may have had about killings they say their client didn't commit."From the very beginning, this case screamed doubt," defense attorney Raj Maline told jurors. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 32-year-old man is expected to survive a stab wound to the abdomen after being attacked by a suspect who rode up on a bicycle and assaulted him on a bridge in the Hillcrest community of San Diego, police said.The victim was with friends on a bridge in the 3900 block of Vermont Street when the bicyclist rode up about 9 p.m. Saturday and stabbed him once in the abdomen, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect rode away southbound on the bridge.
