SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - By the time polls close Tuesday night at 8 p.m., the San Diego County Registrar of Voters could have already processed more than 1.1 million ballots. Registrar Michael Vu says it's possible the first results of the night, released sometime before 9 pm, could account for up to 70% of the total vote.Those numbers will include more than a million mail-in ballots that the Registrar has already received and processed, as well as any in-person votes cast between Saturday and Monday.But those early numbers may not provide clarity."In our world, nothing is over until the election is certified," says Vu.Certification doesn't happen until December 3. And mail-in ballots can still arrive at the Registrar's office as late as November 20th to be counted, as long as they were postmarked by November 3."There's 196 contests on the ballot," says Vu. "For some it will show really wide gaps. And in others, it will show like it's neck and neck and it will continue all the way through until we certify the election."For races that may be close, like the San Diego Mayor's race, those late arriving ballots could be the difference between winning and losing."When you have such a close race at the local level, 10,000 or 20,000 votes left to be counted could be quite significant," says Evan Crawford, Assistant Professor of Political Science at University of San Diego.Crawford says it's common for local races to have changes after election day, noting that early results aren't official until every ballot is counted."We might have to prepare ourselves to not know on election night," says Crawford.He points to the June Primary election for Mayor, where City Councilman Scott Sherman led Barbara Bry for the second spot in the November election. As more ballots went into the final numbers, Bry overtook Sherman to advance.Thad Kousser, the Political Science Department Chair at UC San Diego, says voters should use patience when looking for a clear winner."Even though the game ends on election night when the polls close, no one can cast a ballot after that, it's going to take a while to tally the points for both sides," Kousser says. "And those results are also going to be misleading because there were really strong partisan differences this year in who wants to cast a ballot through what means."That extends to the Presidential race as well. Kousser says states that process mail-in ballots early, like Florida, could see a large Democratic lead in the first round of numbers released. He says Republicans have traditionally preferred to vote in person.Conversely, Kousser says states like Pennsylvania, where mail-in ballots can't be processed until polls close, may see the opposite.Either way, both Kousser and Crawford say accuracy is the most important focus of election officials."Getting it right is more important than getting it quickly," says Kousser. "And making sure that no one claims a quick victory, when a close margin could be overturned by legitimate votes that have a right to be counted.""We have these local election officials," says Crawford. "They're doing the job. They're doing the work. At a certain point, we just have to remind ourselves of that and have some trust in that." 3236

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine rolls out to healthcare workers, at least four have had severe allergic reactions after getting the shot.The cases include two healthcare workers in Alaska and two in the UK. In the UK cases, both individuals carried epipens.“So these were people with a history of severe allergies and not just severe allergies like you got hives, but they had allergies where they encounter certain things in the environment and their body shuts down,” said UC San Francisco infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Chin-Hong.All four have apparently recovered.At this point, doctors aren’t sure what caused the reactions. Generally speaking, allergies when your immune system overreacts to something harmless.Pfizer’s vaccine has 10 ingredients that fit into four categories.The active ingredient is mRNA. These are temporary genetic instructions for your cells to build a small, harmless fragment of the virus’ shell to train your immune system, similar to setting up a punching bag to train a boxer.Then there are fats to stabilize and transport the mRNA, salts to maintain the pH, and sugar to prevent the solution from degrading while freezing.All the ingredients are considered standard. Dr. Chin-Hong says he was struck by what’s not in the vaccine.“They didn't have egg products or any of those kinds of things that people might be allergic to,” he said. “They didn't have live virus, which might also elicit a response.”The only ingredient with a history of allergic reactions is polyethylene glycol, or PEG, one of the fats that acts as an oily bubble for the mRNA.PEG is also in Moderna’s vaccine and it’s common; it’s found in ultrasound gel, laxatives, injectable steroids and other products.Although PEG allergies are rare, the FDA says people who are allergic to any of the 10 ingredients should not get the vaccine.However, experts say people with common allergies should not worry.“A lot of people have minor food allergies or bee-sting allergies or peanut allergies or environmental allergies,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “They may even carry an epi-pen because sometimes it gets severe. Those people would not be excluded from getting this vaccine.”The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology issued guidance saying people with those common allergies, including to latex and medications, “are no more likely than the general public to have an allergic reaction” to the vaccine.After every shot, people who get vaccinated have to wait 15 minutes so healthcare workers can monitor them for a reaction. Should one occur, interventions like epi-pens are very effective.The FDA said people with a history of allergic reactions to vaccines or injectable drugs can still get the shot, but they should wait 30 minutes for slightly longer monitoring.The odds of having a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine is about 1 in 760,000. That means you’re more likely to be struck by lightning in a given year, which the CDC estimates is about 1 in 500,000. 3048

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Another child has been diagnosed with E. Coli linked to animals at the San Diego County Fair, San Diego Health and Human Services officials reported Tuesday. The latest case involves a 6-year-old boy who visited animals at the fair on June 22, officials said. The boy began showing symptoms of Shiga-toxin-producing E. Coli (STEC) four days later. He was not hospitalized. 2-year-old Jedediah Cabezuela died of the illness and three other children were sickened by E. Coli, fair organizers said Friday.RELATED: Family mourns toddler dead after E. Since we asked doctors to be on the lookout for STEC, they are more likely to test patients exhibiting symptoms.” E. Coli can incubate over a period of 10 days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As COVID-19 cases continue to surge across California, many San Diego County businesses are struggling with the latest restrictions. Richard Bailey, mayor of Coronado, is now asking California Gov. Gavin Newsom to reconsider the latest stay-at-home order.Bailey called the order inconsistent, arbitrary, and ineffective."Shutting down businesses that are not contributing to the spread of COVID will not reduce the number of cases, will not reduce the number of hospitalizations, but it will put tens of thousands of people out of work," said Bailey.Restaurants can no longer offer outdoor dining and playgrounds are closed. Personal care services, hair salons, and barbershops are just some businesses that have to shut down for three weeks. Bailey said while COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rising should be taken seriously, some of these closures don't make sense."We should all have a really firm understanding of what our risk level is based on our own demographics and our own underlying conditions. There's no data to support that outdoor dining is a significant risk for transmission," Bailey said.In the letter sent to Newsom on Monday, Bailey asked for a reconsideration of the latest health order based on data specific to San Diego County and a new public health strategy."We should treat citizens like adults and put in place recommendations that really emphasize all the best practices that will slow the spread," he said.Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state's Health and Human Services Secretary, explained Tuesday that only 10 percent of ICU capacity is currently available in the Southern California region, which San Diego County falls into."The transmission is now so widespread across our state that most all nonessential activities create a serious risk for transmission," said Ghaly.He said part of the regional stay-at-home order is based on our experiences with flattening the curve earlier this year and the success of other countries that implemented similar shutdowns."Belgium, when they imposed a nationwide closure, the positivity rate in just three weeks fell from 21 percent to 8 percent," said Ghaly.Bailey said there should be a better plan to slow the spread without causing significant harm to small businesses along the way."They're picking winners and losers, and unfortunately big businesses are the winners, and small businesses that can barely afford it are becoming the losers," said Bailey.In the meantime, Bailey is encouraging business owners to follow the state orders, so places like salons and restaurants don't lose state licensing."We're really just trying to help businesses be compliant to the state order," he said.Newsom has yet to respond to Bailey's letter. 2733
