Therapists are volunteering their time to help health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic.A nonprofit called The Emotional PPE Project is connecting medical workers in need with licensed mental health professionals. They can contact each other directly.“We think that's actually very important, because there are so many barriers to people receiving help, one of them being concerns about licensing implications or concerns about stigma,” said Dr. Daniel Saddawi-Konefka, Board Director and Co-Founder of The Emotional PPE Project.Saddawi-Konefka says it started with a simple text from his neuroscientist neighbor in March, saying “what can I do to help?”Together, the two of them created the online directory for volunteer therapists.While others were talking about ventilator and PPE shortages, Saddawi-Konefka realized resilience would be a crucial problem.“Health care workers, they experience higher levels of burnout, higher levels of depression, and despite that are less good at asking for helping, are less good at reaching out for help,” said Saddawi-Konefka.The group hopes to keep the program alive through the pandemic. There have been about 11 natural disaster in the U.S. this year, each costing more than billion.The Montoyas survived Houston’s Hurricane Harvey. Nearly a year and a half later, they are living in just one bedroom of their house, because they can't afford the repairs to the rest of their home. "It became really overwhelming, so I sat, and I just prayed, and I just said, ‘I'm going to leave it at your feet,’” says Monica Montoya.The Montoyas could be any of us. The locations in the path of natural disasters are changing, whether it's floods, freezing or flames."We're starting to see fires where we haven't seen fires before,” says Professor Jennifer Balch, an earth lab director at the University of Colorado.The client expert says forests are drying out, because global temperatures have warmed 1.8 degrees. Fires that we used to see primarily in the west are starting farther east. "So, the Gatlinburg fires in Tennessee, which killed several people," says Balch as an example.Fourteen people were killed and 2,400 buildings were damaged.Balch says she’s worried for the future."We've also seen fires in the tundra ecosystem in the arctic, which we haven't seen fires in the ecosystem seen 10,000 years," Balch says.Balch says heat will also make things bad in the south and east."We're essentially pumping more atmospheric water into the atmosphere, and that that water becomes available for storms," she says.In the Mid-Atlantic, summer-like weather is lasting a day longer, on average, each year. In the Northeast, it’ll be two days longer, and heat waves will become more common, scientists say.But just like in the south, warmer air also means more moisture for storms in the winter.With even more disasters comes more need, and after a while, those big fundraisers we see afterwards lose steam"Community solidarity that follows disaster is often times very short lived, because that pain and the suffering and the long-term recovery process starts to set in for families and for communities," explains Lori Peek, director of Natural Hazards Center.Fortunately for the Montoyas, the family received manpower help from pastor Joel Osteen's mega-church. They just got a new roof. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is offering up several tips to help travelers avoid a nightmare at the security checkpoint during the week of Halloween at the airport.TSA said when it comes to masks, they ask that you refrain from wearing a Halloween mask until after you made it through the checkpoint screening. They ask that you wear a face-covering that's used to help stop the spread of COVID-19. TSA officers will ask you to remove your mask, temporarily, just so they can verify your identity at the travel document checking podium.When it comes to wearing a costume, TSA recommends you wear it after you go through the checkpoint because it could trigger an alarm, which would lead to you getting patted down.TSA also recommends that you put "realistic replica props" like pitchforks, chainsaws, brooms, or axes in your checked bag. It's a phenomenon where we can feel emotionally lost of something without physical contact.“And that which is missing is something that normally provides us with some contentment, some solace, some feeling that we're safe and that we're amongst others who we can rely on as a bio-behavioral resource,” said Emiliana Simon-Thomas, PhD, Science Director at the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley.Simon-Thomas says hugs can help us communicate trust and support. She says even incidental moments of touch in the community, like brushing shoulders at a concert or giving someone a high-five, can help you feel reassurance.“I'm really worried about people who are absolutely alone,” she said. “I worry a lot about people who are ill and are in a situation where they're not allowed to be in company their loved ones.”For those people, she suggests focusing on a memory of the last time they hugged someone they love.It may sound odd, but some researchers also suggest hugging yourself.Touch is also associated with better heart health and higher levels of oxytocin in the brain.
