CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A North San Diego County woman was awarded child support from her ex-husband nearly 50 years after she says he left her with a young daughter. Toni Anderson makes no apologies for going after the man she calls her "deadbeat ex" for having her raise their 3-year-old daughter on her own. Anderson says her ex-husband chose to go to Canada rather than pay court-ordered child support in the early 1970s. "I kind of put it on the back burner and just kind of forgot about it over the years," said Anderson. She supported her daughter while working as an interior designer in Los Angeles at a firm her daughter now runs."I'm not negating the fact I was able to send my daughter to college, Paris. We traveled and had a good time. But the money runs out." MUST READ: Graffiti referencing New Zealand left at Escondido mosque after possible arsonAnderson admits she rents her part of the house. And now that she's retired, money is tight. Then it dawned on her."I realized in the middle of the night one night last year, 'Hey, there's no statute of limitations on child support.'" Anderson looked up old court papers and last month notified her ex-husband, who's now living in Oregon: she wanted him to pay up. But the amount she was seeking now was way beyond what he was asked to pay nearly a half-century ago."He was only supposed to give me like a 160 dollars a month. Well, that was 50 years ago. That today is a lot more money."With accrued interest of 10 percent a year, what would have been a total payment of some ,000 is now more than 0,000. "I don't think enough women get this. And I think they're afraid."MUST READ: Escondido company recalling avocados due to possible Listeria contaminationAlong with getting what she's due, Anderson wants to spread the word to other single parents in California: You can still collect. And to those who skipped out, her message is for them to watch out."I think he's a little bit panicked.," said Anderson of her husband's reaction to her pursuit. "And I'm very happy because I was panicked all these years. Now, it's his turn."Toni Anderson's lawyer, Sara Yunus, Esq., an Associate Attorney for Antonyan Miranda, LLP, tells 10News a private hearing in Vista Court Wednesday resulted in a settlement of 0,000. 10News also reached out to her ex-husband's attorney. There has been no response. 2379

CHICAGO, Ill. – In 2016, some 33 million ballots were cast by mail, about one quarter of all votes cast. With pandemic protocols and precautions in place, experts estimate a record-breaking number of mail-in votes this election cycle.Voting by mail has been in place for more than 150 years – since the Civil War.“It's become so common in the United States that since 2010, about a quarter of the electorate has voted by mail in federal elections,” said Lawrence Norden, director of the Election Reform Program at the non-partisan Brennan Center for Justice. Some states have what’s known as a universal vote-by-mail system, which means they mail ballots to all their voters. But in most states, voters must request an absentee ballot.“Most of them have made exceptions for 2020, because of COVID and so what we have left is only a handful of states where you need an excuse to vote by mail,” said Norden.According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, normally 34 states and Washington, D.C. allow no-excuse absentee/mailed ballot voting. Those include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.Five automatically mail ballots to voters: Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. And specifically, for 2020, at least four more have done the same: California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Vermont. For months, President Donald Trump has claiming that mail-in voting leads to mass fraud.“The mailed ballots are corrupt, in my opinion. And they collect them, and they get people to go in and sign them. And then they — they’re forgeries in many cases. It’s a horrible thing,” he said to reporters in April.Experts say that’s not true. While there have been a few examples of fraud committed in mail voting, in modern history, studies indicate it’s not common at all.“The chances of somebody committing fraud in mail voting is about the same as somebody getting struck by lightning,” said Norden. “It's extremely rare.”Rejection is more common.According to the Brennan Center, during the midterm elections, nationwide more than 430,000 mailed ballots were rejected due to delays, minor defects, and voter errors. In some states, rejected ballots affected minorities at higher rates than white voters.Norden recommends voting as early as possible when using a mail-in or absentee ballot.“Do it early, so you can avoid the kind of last-minute complications that sometimes we've seen,” he said. “The number one reason that mail ballots don't count is because people get them in late.”Even with the vote-by-mail expansion, there are still variations in deadlines and rules. Experts say it’s also important to make sure you follow your state’s specific requirements. 2999

Carnival Cruise Lines announced Thursday that they are canceling several cruises until early 2021 due to COVID-19.In a press release, the cruise line company said that all P&O Cruises to the Caribbean were canceled until Jan. 2021, and cruises from and to Southampton, Arcadia, and Aurora were canceled through February.P&O Cruises is part of the Carnival Corporation.“With evolving restrictions on travel from the UK, unfortunately, it is necessary to cancel these itineraries," P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said in the news release. "These further cancellations vary according to ship as well as complexity and length of itineraries, advice, and guidance regarding ports of call and current air availability for fly/cruises. We are continuing to monitor the overall situation closely and will certainly reintroduce cruises should the opportunity arise, and it is feasible to do so.”Carnival also stated that they were delaying the return of Carnival Paradise, Carnival Magic, Carnival Valor, and the Carnival Spirit until next year "after scheduled dry dock enhancements are completed in the first half of 2021.""This extended pause in our operations has also impacted shipyard availability, and we've had to reschedule required dry docks," Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line in the release. "As we continue to work through issues related to our eventual return to operations, we are committed to providing our guests and travel agent partners with certainty where we can, although we regret disappointing our guests. We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our guests and hope to welcome them back onboard soon."According to the Washington Post, the cruise line company also plans to sell 18 ships, which makes up 23% of its fleet. 1792

Cancer treatments can take a toll on the mind and body, leaving many patients feeling alone and isolated. Now, senior citizens fighting cancer, like Mary Hill, are able to escape their hospital rooms through virtual reality.By putting on a pair of goggles, Hill now spends her chemo appointments on stage at Red Rocks Amphitheater as an orchestra plays classical music all around her virtually, while in reality, she receives cancer treatments. “Wherever it is that they want to be that’s not a hospital room, we give them the opportunity to go there,” said Kyle Rand with Rendever, a company designed to reduce social isolation through shared experiences in virtual reality.Rendever is operating in more than 200 locations across the U.S. and Canada, serving seniors by offering them hundreds of virtual experiences to choose from.“The magical part about this is that they get to move from the hospital room that they’re in to all of a sudden being at the Red Rocks, or being standing on the Eiffel tower, or being in Brazil,” Rand said.Medical experts say this kind of distraction therapy is very helpful, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.“In the middle of this pandemic, a place that we’re not able to go to right now and enjoy and everyone loves Red Rocks,” said Nikki Caputo with UCHealth. She says adding VR for patients is somewhat challenging for an already busy staff, but that the benefits are well worth it.“From a mind, body and soul perspective, being able to put on a headset and take your mind to a completely different place, it's quite something,” she said. It's something patients like Hill say helps them escape during this pandemic and ultimately overcome depression and isolation.“With COVID, I don’t go anywhere,” she said. “I’m safe and secure and there’s an outside world that I can think about instead of myself.” 1848

BUIZINGEN, Belgium (AP) — To ensure the merriment of millions of Belgian children, the government is offering a special exemption from the stringent coronavirus measures to beloved St. Nicholas. The saint always delivers bountiful presents on the morning of Dec. 6. In a tongue-in-cheek letter Thursday, Belgium's health and interior ministers soothed the worries of youngsters fearing they might go without presents. The officials said Nicholas wouldn’t have to quarantine after arriving in Belgium from Spain, where he lives, and would be able to walk rooftops to drop gifts into chimneys even during curfew hours. They wrote: "Do what you do best: make every child happy. We are counting on you.” 707
