SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thursday San Diego city leaders announced the city will be joining AARP’s network of age-friendly communities.This means elected officials have made a commitment to prepare for San Diego’s aging population with policies that will focus on AARP’s “8 Domains of Livability” which include communication, civic participation, housing and transportation.At a press conference in front of San Diego City Hall, Councilmember Chris Ward said the city is committed to building a “sustainable and inclusive city where San Diegans of all ages and abilities can have long, active, and productive lives.”San Diego now joins Chula Vista, La Mesa, and the County of San Diego in becoming an age-friendly community.“San Diego’s membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and our local partnership with The San Diego Foundation are essential to helping residents live easily and comfortably in their homes and communities as they age,” said Ward.“This is just the beginning, the hard work begins, the implementation part of it is where it’s at,” said Joe Garbanzos with AARP California. “It’s good to see that the city recognized that this is good framework to use to help advance livable communities in the area.”Kevin Mayor Faulconer was not present at the news conference, but wrote the following statement.“Here in San Diego we’re focused on building more affordable housing, increasing mobility choices, and creating livable communities to improve the quality of life for all San Diegans, including older adults,” said Faulconer. “We also recognize the importance of preparing for San Diego’s aging population with policies that enhance healthy aging, civic participation, and social inclusion. San Diego State University's planned Mission Valley campus will generate more than 45,000 daily vehicle trips once its built out, according to a new draft environmental impact report.In November, San Diego voters approved a plan for SDSU to turn the SDCCU Stadium site into a Mission Valley campus. It will allow the university to grow from its current enrollment of 36,000 to more than 50,000. "It's great, it's allowing more students to come in and get their education started," said Tyler Ollison, who just transferred to SDSU. The university is planning more than just a campus in Mission Valley. It also is proposing a 35,000 seat stadium, 4,600 residential units, 400 hotel rooms, and 95,000 square-feet of retail, restaurants, and a grocery story. Plus, the university plans to build 1.4 million square feet of campus office and lab space, and 100 thousand square feet of medical office space.Its new draft environmental impact report says the project will ultimately generate 45,174 new daily trips to and from the campus, in already bustling Mission Valley. "Our project proposes a number of signal re-timings, and expansions of turn lanes, and a number of entrances and exits throughout the site," said Gina Jacobs, SDSU's vice president for the development. Jacobs added the project calls for a new road from Fenton Parkway into the campus. The draft EIR also studies alternate forms of transportation, including how the on-site trolley stop can figure in. The project completion is expected in 2037. Meanwhile, the new stadium is expected to open in 2022. SDSU is now taking feedback on its draft EIR, which can be viewed here. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say a man was stabbed by his ex-girlfriend in a home on 3500 block of Adams Avenue just before 2:45 p.m. Sunday.A witness said she saw the man hobbling after the ex-girlfriend as she drove off. The witness followed the car long enough to get the license plate number.The man was bleeding from the right thigh.Police say neighbors jumped in to help the man, before he was transported to the hospital. Police say he is in stable condition.The ex-girlfriend returned to the scene and was arrested. Police say another man was arrested, who was involved with the ex-girlfriend.Adams Avenue westbound at 36th Street is shut down, and may reopen around 6 p.m., according to police. 728

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California’s coronavirus cases are surging and health officials say social gatherings and people not wearing masks or keeping their distance are fueling the rise. Yet it’s businesses that are paying the price in the form of revenue-sapping restrictions. Business owners say that’s not fair and some medical experts say they have a point. Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a professor who specializes in infectious diseases at the University of California, San Francisco, said restrictions targeting entire classes of businesses aren't very fine-tuned and don't address specific activities that are driving the increase. 635

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --Three hours after returning from his deployment, Navy Lt. Eric Turner went to Seaworld. Not for the same reason as most visitors though - he was there to surprise his wife. Beckie Turner is a trainer. Hundreds of people pack in to see the "Dolphin Days" show at the park. Beckie does it every day, but Wednesday, September 13 there was something different going on backstage. "She's not expecting me, she thinks I'm on medical hold or something like that," her husband told 10News Reporter Bree Steffen.  "I hope she's not mad haha." Lt. Turner is back early from his 11-month deployment in the Middle East. The couple was reunited after he walked down the arena stairs, people cheering as Beckie got out of the water and embraced her husband. "It's nice to have him home," she said, tearing up. "Thank you all for being a part of it, it's really special." Eric and Beckie have four kids, have been married 10 years, and both of their parents served in the Navy.  1035
