BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Sunday more attention should be paid to raising people's living standards while striving for economic growth.Hu made the remarks at a symposium with non-Communist parties and individuals to mark the Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 3 this year.Hu urged the parties and social groups to pursue the people-first principle and help the government to better serve the people."We should always make the improvement of people's lives an important starting point in promoting development in a scientific way and enhancing social harmony," Hu said.Chinese President Hu Jintao (C), also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivers an important speech at a symposium with non-Communist parties and individuals to mark the Spring Festival in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 30, 2011.He said the government would focus on the transformation of its economic development pattern, and try to achieve its economic targets this year, which is also the start of the 12th five-year period (2011-2015).Hu hoped the non-Communist parties and individuals would concentrate on promoting scientific development and put forward practical suggestions for achieving comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).Hu said the past 90 years had proved that unison of ideas, targets and actions in the multi-party cooperation system under CPC leadership guaranteed the country to achieve progress in revolution, development and reform.Hu expressed appreciation for the contributions of non-Communist parties and individuals to social and economic development last year."We must rely on all Chinese people, including non-Communist parties, societies, ethnic groups and people from all walks of life and in different strata to achieve this year's goals for economic and social development," said Hu.At the event, Hu also extended New Year's greetings and best wishes to all people from the non-Communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce and those without party affiliations.Non-Communist party leaders at the gathering gave opinions on issues such as multi-party cooperation, rural social security system, water conservation, strategic emerging industries, education and cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Straits. The meeting was chaired by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has reiterated a strict ban on hepatitis B tests during pre-employment physical examinations as many companies reportedly violated rules to require hepatitis B tests for job applicants. In a statement released Saturday, the Ministry of Health said that no health institutions are allowed to provide hepatitis B checks as part of pre-employment physical tests regardless of whether the examinees provide consent or not.On Feb. 10, 2010, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security jointly issued a circular demanding the cancellation of the hepatitis B tests during the health checks for school enrollment and employment nationwide. However, according to a survey released this week, which was conducted by the non-profit Beijing Yirenping Center, some 61.1 percent of the 180 state-run companies surveyed included hepatitis B checks in their pre-employment physical examinations.More surprisingly, 63 companies said that they would never consider hepatitis B carriers for a job or were reluctant to hire such people.Yu Fangqiang, the principal of the Yirenping Center, said that such violations mainly resulted from light punishment for violations and some health institutions' desire for profits.According to the survey, employers would only be fined between thousands to tens of thousands of yuan if they lose their lawsuits for bias against hepatitis B carriers.Meanwhile, a worker will spend a lot of time, energy and money to file a lawsuit and collect evidence in order to win.Liu Xiaonan, an associate professor with the China University of Political Science and Law, called on the government to hammer out a particular law and set up a special committee to investigate discrimination cases in order to ensure the rights of workers. In the statement released Saturday, the health ministry also ordered a careful investigation of all cases of hepatitis B discrimination, and promised that violators would be exposed and punished in accordance with laws and regulations.Medical tests show that hepatitis B virus can only be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth or by contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person.

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's railways transported about 77.34 million passengers during the fifteen days (Jan. 19 to Feb. 2) before the Spring Festival, the Ministry of Railways said. The figure was about 9.5 percent higher than the same period last year and set a new record, according to a report posted on the ministry's website. There were an average of 5.16 million passengers per day, up 448,000 from the same period last year. On Jan. 29, passengers topped 5.78 million, setting a new record for daily transportation before the Spring Festival, the report said.In the fifteen days before the festival, about 4.80 million passengers left Beijing, 8.39 million left Guangzhou and 5.69 million left Shanghai, while year-on-year growth and those leaving Guangzhou rose the most, up 15 percent year on year, said the report. The ministry said challenges still exist as more snow and rain will hit southern China after the Spring Festival, when passengers are returning.China's busy Spring Festival transportation season runs for 40 days and is calculated in two phases: 15 days before the Spring Festival and 25 days after the Spring Festival, the report explained.

NICOSIA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Cypriot geneticists have reported a non-invasive Down's Syndrome test that could possibly replace the risky amniocentesis procedure now in use.A team of researchers at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics reported in Nature Medicine journal that the new test involves only a small quantity of blood taken from the mother's arm, which is analyzed to detect DNA differences between the mother and the fetus.Philippos Patsalis, medical director of the institute, said Tuesday the new method eliminates dangers involved with amniocentesis testing, which involves sampling amniotic fluid by inserting a hollow needle into the mother's uterus. At present, only women belonging to high risk groups, including older women, are tested for Down's Syndrome, which is the most common genetic cause of mental retardation.Patsalis, who led the study, said the new method would be made available to the medical community after clinical tests are concluded world-wide on 1,000 women within two years.
