Michelle Obama's nationwide tour for her new book "Becoming" has already helped the book achieve a publishing milestone.Barnes & Noble said Monday that Obama had "the biggest first-week sales of any book this year."Until November, that title belonged to Bob Woodward's Trump administration dissection, "Fear," which came out in September. Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff's officials say a man has been taken into custody after threatening to shoot churchgoers in the north Valley. The investigation began on February 19, when detectives received a Facebook post in Romanian. The post reportedly translated into concerning statements, but nothing specific about the North Valley Romanian Pentecostal Church. A witness reportedly overheard a phone conversation in Romanian on speakerphone. In that call, Ismaiel Damian indicated he was planning on entering the church to shoot and kill many people in attendance with his machine gun. Detectives monitored Damian leaving for the church and took him into custody on Sunday.A .38 Special Taurus revolver was located in his vehicle. Damian was booked into a jail for misdemeanor use of an electronic communication to terrify, intimidate, threaten or harass.  907

MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — The Martin County Sheriff's Office said a 28-year-old man faces poaching charges after deputies said he was caught with two gopher tortoises at a state park.Deputies responded Sunday evening to Seabranch Preserve State Park and found the suspect, identified as Robert Lane, on the ground.The sheriff's office said Lane pulled two endangered tortoises from their hole and was on the ground searching for others.Lane was in possession of a male and a female gopher tortoise when deputies caught him.They said he admitted to deputies that he pulled both of the tortoises from their hole and was going to take them home where he had planned to eat them.Gopher tortoises are a threatened species and federally protected.The case was turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Lane faces charges related to poaching on state property.Deputies said they found the hole where Lane pulled the tortoises from and returned both reptiles to the location.  1043

Millions of people are still unemployed in the United States. On one hand, the unemployment rate has been going down since its peak in June. On the other hand, it’s still almost triple what it was before the pandemic.“I just never anticipated this is where we would be in September,” said Bridget Altenburg, president of the National Able Network.For 40 years, the National Able Network has been helping people find work. But in the past six months, it has been working overtime on that. The organization has been getting roughly 100 calls for employment help a day, serving more than 10,000 people since March.“It is scary for the people that we are talking to,” said Altenburg. “It’s scary for them because we thought it would be a month or two months of unemployment, and here we are, basically six months later, trying to help people navigate who’s hiring.”Altenburg has two key pieces of advice for anyone unemployed right now. One, she is emphatic that there are employers out there hiring.“There are employers that are desperate for people,” said Altenburg. “So, don’t immediately assume that there is nothing out there, so I might as well not look.”Secondly, Altenburg recommends anyone unemployed take a moment to figure out potential jobs in current high-demand fields and think creatively about how your current skill sets apply to those potential jobs.“Don’t sell yourself short in terms of what makes you uniquely qualified for that role,” she added.For example, you wouldn’t think of a restaurant worker having a unique skill set to be a good fit in the IT field, but the National Able Network has been training them to switch over and IT employers are flocking to recruit these workers.“People who have been servers intuitively know customer service in a way that I could never teach somebody that is in IT,” Altenburg explained.In addition to the National Able Network, there is also about 2,400 government-funded American Job Centers nationwide offering free career and job hunt services. In addition, most public libraries, even many community colleges, are offering free resume and some career services help as well.“At Lyft, when we think of the way we can make on communities, we think about how we can use transportation to do so,” said Lisa Boyd with Lyft.The ride-share company has even jumped in to help the millions on the job hunt. It is providing free rides, now in 20 cities, to people going to and from job interviews, job training, and even free rides to work until they get their first paycheck at their new job.The program started in 2019, but at the beginning of the pandemic, Lyft expanded it to help with the increased need.“We have a job access hub on our Lyft website,” said Boyd. “That will help you be able to go in and sign up on a form.”Anyone in need of the free ride while you job hunt or start a new job can go to Lyft's Job Access Page on its website. All you have to do is provide info on where you live, what kind of help you need, and the site will connect you with your local United Way or Goodwill. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A grand jury announced Wednesday that none of the three officers involved in the police killing of Breonna Taylor will be indicted on homicide charges, including murder or manslaughter.Instead, one of the officers, Brett Hankison, is being charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for firing into the apartments of Taylor's neighbors. The class D felony is punishable of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to ,000. Hankison's bail is set at ,000 cash bond.Kentucky law says, “a person is guilty of wanton endangerment in the first degree when, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, he wantonly engages in conduct which creates a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to another person.”The other two officers involved in the shooting, Jon Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, are not facing charges.During a press conference, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron said the state could not pursue charges against Mattingly and Cosgrove, because their use of force was “justified to protect themselves” after being fired upon by Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker.“This justification bars us from pursuing criminal charges in Miss Breonna Taylor’s death,” said Cameron.Cameron also said a witness corroborated officers' claims that they announced themselves prior to entering Taylor's apartment, where they shot and killed the 26-year-old EMT. Cameron said it was "difficult" to inform Taylor's family about the grand jury's decision. "It's been a difficult day. It's a very difficult day for Louisville, the entire commonwealth and the whole country," said Cameron.Cameron expressed his condolences to Taylor's family.“Every day this family wakes up to the realization that someone they loved is no longer with them," he said. "There’s nothing I can offer today to take away the grief and heartache this family is experiencing as a result of losing a child, a niece, a sister and a friend.”With protests expected following the charging decision, Cameron is urging demonstrators to remain peaceful in the coming days.
