Here's what's making headlines in the political world on Saturday, November 24 2018:Trump administration asks SCOTUS to hear transgender ban- In yet another aggressive attempt to bypass federal appeals courts, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's policy that bars most transgender individuals from military service. The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter and later officially released by Secretary of Defense James Mattis, blocks individuals who suffer from a condition known as gender dysphoria from serving with limited exceptions. It also specifies that individuals without the condition can serve but only if they do so according to the sex they were assigned at birth.District courts across the country have so far blocked the policy from going into effect. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in one challenge earlier this fall and the DC Circuit will hear arguments in early December. Read more 1022

Geese are terrifying. Everyone knows this. Their bites hurt land they have no respect for children or the elderly. In fact, they are the second-most terrifying bird behind turkeys (large, tenacious) and ahead of crows (eidetic, vengeful). So this momentous trio of photographs showing a Canada goose absolutely trucking a high school golfer near Blissfield, Michigan, is just a reminder of the natural order of things. You can have, as one Twitter user put it, a "quiver full of bird maulers" and a whole high school athlete's worth of physical power, but the goose is going to win every time. It's science. The unlucky human sacrifice here is Isaac Couling, a member of the Concord High School golf team. According to Blissfield Golf Coach Steve Babbitt, Couling, 16, was competing in the Madison Tournament at the World Creek Golf Course in Adrian, Michigan, when terror rained down."The group just finished teeing off on hole #7 and were walking down the fairway," Babbitt told CNN in an email. "They were aware of a goose nest on their left which they were looking at but not bothering when from behind them and to the right came the guard goose (protecting the nest)."Then came a rather alarming escalation, a whole Shakespearean tragedy in three acts. The Blissfield Athletics Twitter account explained that Couling was caught off guard by the charging bird as he was keeping an eye on another, probably equally threatening, goose. As Couling attempted to flee the chaos he tripped, allowing the goose a clear coup de grace.Said Blissfield Athletics on Twitter: "And you thought golf was boring?"Massive credit should also be given to Devon Pitts of Blissfield, the photographer who caught this inspiring moment of nature in action."You can say (she) was at the right place at the right time," Babbitt said.Fortunately, Couling is fine despite his close brush with winged evil. He tells CNN he was able to pick up the game where he left off, though only on the goose's terms."My clubs fell out and the goose guarded my golf clubs, so I had to finish with my teammate's clubs," he said. "The coaches had to go out with golf carts (to chase it away) while I finished the hole."  2192

Grab your headphones and prepare to be blown away.NASA just announced it has heard the first-ever "sounds" of wind on Mars. But if you're expecting howling, swooshes and crackles, you're in for a surprise. These are vibrations, captured by NASA's InSight lander, which touched down on the Red Planet just last week. The craft will stay put until November 24, 2020, measuring quakes that happen anywhere on Mars. This week, the craft recorded something unexpected."InSight sensors captured a haunting low rumble caused by vibrations from the wind, estimated to be blowing between 10 to 25 mph (5 to 7 meters a second) on Dec. 1, from northwest to southeast," the agency said.An air pressure sensor and a seismometer recorded the noise through the vibrations in the air and vibrations around the aircraft "caused by the wind moving over the spacecraft's solar panels."This is the only time when vibrations from the lander will be recorded by the seismometer, since it will be moved by the craft's robotic armed and placed on the Martian surface, along with other instruments. The craft's landing comes as part of NASA's mission to explore the planet's deep interior.InSight lander's sensors are designed to detect quakes and air pressure through wind vibrations. The lander will measure whether tremors have the same effect as earthquakes. The Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS), the seismometer, will use the vibrations to help scientists configure more about the planet's interior."Capturing this audio was an unplanned treat. But one of the things our mission is dedicated to is measuring motion on Mars, and naturally that includes motion caused by sound waves," Bruce Banerdt, the InSight principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a statement. To better hear this bass sound, it's better you bring out your headphones, or your subwoofer, as NASA suggested. You can hear the sounds here and listen to NASA's news telecon with a panel of scientists here.The-CNN-Wire 2011

FROSTPROOF, Fla. — The horrific act of violence done to an elderly beagle named “Max” is so severe it’s bringing tears to the volunteers tasked with saving his life. The beagle was found wandering December 11 near a home on the 500 block of Otto Polk Road in Frostproof, Florida. A good Samaritan cleaned Max’s wounds and then called Hardee Animal Rescue Team (HART), a nonprofit based in Wauchula, Florida to save his life.“Knife wounds on top of his neck and the big laceration across his back and a bullet on his head and a bullet on his ear,” said Leigh Sockalosky, the president of HART. “He got a blood transfusion yesterday. He was doing well but we did the blood transfusion to boost him up because the tissue, a lot of it dies and you have a lot of infection you are battling.” 808

HAWTHORNE (CNS) - Southern California-based SpaceX will look to achieve another milestone late Friday evening when it attempts to launch the first test flight of its sleek capsule designed to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. The Crew Dragon, a stepped-up version of SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft that is used to carry cargo to the Space Station, is scheduled for to launch at 11:49 p.m. California time Friday from Cape Canaveral in Florida, propelled by a Falcon 9 rocket. The Crew Dragon mission will be unmanned, testing the new ship's capabilities and ability to self-dock at the Space Station.PHOTO GALLERY: SPACEX ROCKET LAUNCH LIGHTS UP EVENING SKYCargo-carrying Dragon capsules are usually captured by the Space Station's robotic arms and brought into the docking bay. The Crew Dragon is designed to dock and un-dock on its own.The Crew Dragon being launched Friday night will be carrying a sensor- laden mannequin, outfitted in a SpaceX spacesuit, along with about 400 pounds of supplies and equipment. The spaceship is expected to arrive at the International Space Station at about 3 a.m. California time on Sunday. The ship will remain docked at the station until about 11:30 p.m. Pacific time March 7, when it begins its journey back to Earth. It is expected to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean -- slowed by four parachutes -- about six hours later.VIDEO REPORT: No, it was not a UFO. SpaceX launches rocket into space off California coastAssuming the test flight goes well, SpaceX is scheduled to actually launch astronauts into space for a short demonstration flight this summer, possibly in July. NASA has already chosen astronauts Robert Behnken and Doug Hurley for the historic mission. Assuming no issues with that flight, two other astronauts -- Victor Glover and Mike Hopkins -- will later become the first humans carried by a Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station. 1929
