SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Countywide influenza cases hit a season high last week, and three more residents died due to flu complications, county health officials announced Wednesday.The county's Health and Human Services Agency confirmed a total of 616 flu cases last week, beating last week's season-high of 545 cases. The county has confirmed 6,094 flu cases so far this season, compared to 18,137 a year ago.The county's flu death toll now sits at 45 after two men, ages 44 and 33, and a 101-year-old woman died due to flu complications. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was operating a panga boat carrying several undocumented immigrants when it capsized off the coast of southern San Diego County earlier this year, killing two men aboard, was sentenced today to nearly seven years in federal prison.Julio Cesar Murillo-Arce, 42, pleaded guilty earlier this year to federal charges stemming from the Feb. 3 boating accident off the coast of Imperial Beach.He was sentenced to 78 months in prison in connection with the boat fatalities, and an additional five months for violating the terms of his supervised release stemming from a separate maritime alien smuggling conviction last year, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.According to court papers, Border Patrol agents spotted the boat in the early morning hours of Feb. 3. It began experiencing engine trouble about 150 yards off the coast, prosecutors said, then eventually became inoperable.Prosecutors say Murillo-Arce told the others aboard not to identify him as the boat's captain, then dove into the water.The boat was capsized by a large wave, sending all six occupants into the sea. Four were able to make it to shore, but Ramon Ponce-Rodriguez and Modesto Rodriguez-Ballesteros did not.Ponce-Rodriguez was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, while Rodriguez-Ballesteros was initially hospitalized in critical condition and died Feb. 4.The surviving occupants of the boat told investigators that the boat's captain abandoned the vessel and swam away, despite being told some of the people aboard could not swim. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - CVS Health announced Thursday it is expanding its COVID- 19 no-cost testing program by adding 35 more test sites at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thrus across California, including three locations in San Diego County, amid a surge in new coronavirus cases.The opening of additional test sites on Friday adds to the 107 locations previously opened statewide, including 14 in San Diego County.The nearly 200 additional test sites opening across the country this week are among the more than 1,400 locations CVS Health has opened since May and expand the company's testing capacity to more than 1.5 million tests per month, subject to availability of supplies and lab capacity, according to President and CEO Larry J. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Just after midnight, a full rail closure between Oceanside and San Diego to accommodate work along the passenger and freight rail line will go into effect and continue until 5 a.m. Monday.The closure will affect four rail services operating on the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor: North County Transit District COASTER, Metrolink, Amtrak and the freight carrier BNSF.On Monday, riders are encouraged to plan for increased travel time as trains could be delayed.Full rail closures are routinely scheduled to advance rail construction and ensure worker safety. During the upcoming closure, construction activities are planned for the Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization project and the Mid-Coast Trolley project.In Del Mar, stabilization work continues on the bluffs. Crews will weld and test tieback anchors along previously placed support columns and pour concrete for retaining wall installation on the upper bluffs near 12th Street. Crews will also place concrete panels along previously installed support columns and backfill the area on the upper bluffs north of Torrey Pines State Beach.Officials said the Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization 4 project to repair drainage infrastructure and stabilize portions of the 1.6 miles of coastal bluffs is scheduled to be complete this fall.In San Diego, ongoing construction activities are planned throughout the Mid-Coast Trolley corridor.
