SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the most controversial developments in San Diego's recent history is now welcoming its first residents. The One Paseo development has leased about 60 of its planned 608 housing units, most of which are still under construction. The complex aims to put everything within the reach of its residents in a live, work, play environment. The model units are even staged to make the most discriminating apartment shopper feel right at home. The fridge is stocked with sodas, candy, snacks, and even beer. "If you come here, it's like living on a vacation everyday," said Jay Rey-Hiplito, Kilroy's vice president. "We've got pools, we've got fitness centers, if you're into the best restaurants, you can walk right across the street."RELATED: One Paseo set to open in Carmel Valley following numerous setbacksOne Paseo packs 608 housing units into three buildings just south of Del Mar Heights Road. Rey-Hipolito says with San Diego's supply crunch, renters are willing to live in dense apartment complexes like One Paseo. He says they are increasingly looking at the housing units as places where they rest, spending their leisure time and entertaining at the amenities. The complex includes two pools (one saltwater), a community room, and an expansive gym. In all, that's why he believes the price is right for the units. Studios start at ,350 a month, and the model two-bedroom, at 1,058 square feet, goes for between ,600 and ,800 a month."Instead of looking at price, it's important to focus on value," Rey-Hiploito said. "When you're looking at what you get, you may no longer need to have a second car, you may not need to have a gym membership anymore."RELATED: City Council approves slimmed down One PaseoOne Paseo is a three-pronged, 0-million development that includes housing, office, and retail. The San Diego City Council approved a larger version in 2015, but nearby residents, and the owners of the mall across the street, led a referendum that ended with the current scaled down development. So far, 237 units are available. The development includes 61 affordable units for households earning up to 65 percent of the area median income. The full construction should be complete by the first quarter of 2020. 2259

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Now that the Democratic Party has officially backed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, it’s time for the Republican National Convention. The four-night convention begins with a roll call on Monday evening from delegates who take turns stating their pick for the nominee. California Republican National Committeewoman and Delegate to Republican National Convention Harmeet Dhillon said they are expecting a unanimous vote for President Trump and VP Mike Pence. Then, top republicans and citizens will speak through the next few nights. President Trump is expected to speak Thursday evening, but the schedule also shows he will be in the program to some capacity every evening. This would typically be a time when hundreds from California attend, but with coronavirus restrictions, that’s not possible this year. Dhillon said California would typically have 170 delegates, an equal number of alternates and guests, but that number has dwindled to just 6 for 2020. She said everyone in Charlotte has taken multiple coronavirus tests and said she feels safe with the health guidelines being practiced.Dhillon also said that she encouraged people who would not be flying to the RNC to donate the money saved from staying home. She said it typically costs thousands of dollars per person to travel to the convention.“I asked a lot of people to please contribute that money toward the candidate of your choice in California so I think the cancellation of this event has actually led to a lot of, hundreds of thousands of dollars being invested back into California,” she said.A schedule of the week can be found here. 1630
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the San Diego Zoo's oldest residents was euthanized due to age-related illnesses Wednesday. The zoo's male African lion, M'bari, had been suffering from a degenerative kidney, large kidney cyst, and spinal arthritis and under veterinary care before the decision was made to put him down, according to park spokesperson Andrew Jones. At 15-years-old, M'bari had exceeded expectations of a lion's average lifespan, which is about 10 years in the wild and can exceed 25 years in captivity, according to the zoo."In recent days, his condition had steadily worsened, despite attempts by animal care staff to modify his habitat to make him more comfortable," a statement from the zoo read. "This morning, because of his worsening quality of life, animal care staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him."M'bari was introduced to locals at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 2004 with the opening of Lion Camp when he was about two years old. He eventually moved to the San Diego Zoo in 2009, and has most recently lived with his mate, Etosha, in the Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey habitat. Perhaps the most vocal of the pride, visitors were routinely treated to M'bari's mighty roar when visiting the park."His early morning and late afternoon roars could be heard throughout the entire Zoo," officials said. 1358
