SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Get ready for March Madness as San Diego State University is going dancing in Wichita.SDSU's men's basketball team was selected as a number 11 seed on Sunday for the NCAA tournament.The Aztecs will face Houston, a number six seed, on Thursday in Wichita, in the first round of the tournament. This is SDSU's seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the last nine years. They have been to the Big Dance a total of 12 times, and this is their first time under head coach Brian Dutcher. The Aztecs are on a nine-game win streak, with their 82-75 victory over New Mexico on Saturday capturing the Mountain West championship and guaranteeing them a spot in the NCAA tournament.   728

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Downtown several huge murals cover plywood boards that protect businesses shuttered during the pandemic, as they reopen, those murals are coming down."It was definitely, I don't know, surreal." The Tipsy Crow Director of Operations Nathan Colonero said it was surreal seeing a familiar place always packed with friends completely empty.As the pandemic wore on, Colonero noticed a change."You could slowly see the shadow work its way over downtown," Colonero said. Then he got a call from the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I said well we aren't looking to spend too much money right now while we're closed. He said, 'No no no, we just want to beautify downtown and put a whole different spin on it for anyone walking around." It was an idea he could get behind.The partnership recruited local artists, including Pandr Design Co., to paint seven murals downtown between April 27th and mid-May.Some had inspirational messages, like " Stay Strong" and "Things will be okay".Neighbors are loving it."It was exciting to see this art in the city," Two-year-resident MJ Hasoneh said."It was a very beautiful thing that they did and I'm grateful for that," Neighbor Juan Gonzalez said."Honestly it's so nice to see the artwork, obviously all these places have to be closed right now," Ali Calder said while walking her dog.Now that businesses are reopening, the artwork is coming down."I mean they were doing so much beautiful work on them, of course I'm glad that they're taking them down, but it was very good to see because it lifted a lot of people's spirits," Gonzalez said.Colonero shared the same sentiment, "it was kind of sad taking them down, but obviously very excited to open up have people look in and see all the renovations we've done."He and other downtown businesses hope to make up some of their losses during this trying time.The partnership is storing the murals for future use as temporary displays or if needed on other buildings. 1972

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Getting an education these days seems to be getting more and more expensive. But The San Diego Foundation has millions in scholarship money to award to local students pursuing a variety of secondary education options. Students like Jawid Habib, who received money through several years of college and law school. As the son of Afghan immigrants, Habib says his accomplishments meant a great deal, "I'll never forget the moment that I got my college acceptance letter at UCSD and I handed it to my mom and I'll never forget the tears in her eyes and I'll never forget the tears in my father's eyes when they saw that acceptance letter."As happy as that moment was, the reality of paying for school was still a challenge, until he found the Foundation. "It gave me peace of mind, that's one of the biggest things it gave me peace of mind because I was more focused on success rather than focused on how to afford my education," Habib said.Danielle Valenciano is the director of community scholarships at the foundation and tells 10News that last year the non-profit gave out more than .6 million to nearly 900 students. "If we're able to help offset hunger or homelessness or their books or a bus pass so they can get to school every day, we're doing our job as a community to help these students succeed," Valenciano said. The application process for next year is already underway, and there's money for all kinds of education, including community college, career and technical schools and teaching credential programs. Valenciano also says some of their donors are looking for so-called diamonds in the rough, "Students who may not have the best high school grades but there's something there and they have aspirations and they have a goal, these donors want to help these students."And hopefully give them an opportunity to achieve their goals, like Habib who is now a practicing attorney. 1921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Families with children in the county's largest school district will have to wait until next year to have their kids return to the classroom.Today San Diego Unified School District leaders and School Board members announced that the goal for phase 2 of their reopening plan is January.Elementary school students would return on January 4th, after winter break. Middle and high school kids would return on January 25th.School officials say virus spread in the community could jeopardize that plan."We actually anticipate that San Diego County will move into the purple tier sometime in the next few weeks. We know that once the county moves into the purple tier we can continue with phase 1, not phase 2," said Richard Barrera, school board vice-president.Under phase 2, pre-k to fifth grade would return to campus four days a week. They'd be split up into an am or pm session. Fridays would be online. Middle and high school students would be on campus two days a week, also split into two groups, with Fridays on line. Families can still opt for remote learning."I think it's a start, I think it's a plan that should've been implemented on day one, it's just surprising that eight weeks into the school year we're just coming up with this plan," said parent Gina Smith.Smith is a family therapist and mom of an eight-year-old boy. She started a group with other parents pushing for schools to reopen. They've been holding rallies outside the school district offices. She believes the district hasn't done enough to get kids back to class."Absolutely poorly, all the way around, they've had seven months to prepare up until now, and we've had no communication up until the point that we started these rallies," said Smith.The district has been working with UCSD scientists on the reopening plan. School leaders said they've spent more than million on PPE, sanitation, social distancing measures, ventilation, and other precautions.Berrara said it's the district's goal to have a robust testing plan that would regularly test everyone who comes on campus."I don't think there is a single district in this county, or frankly in this country, that can make the claim right now that they know that if somebody comes onto one of their campuses with the virus that they are able to prevent the spread, because we don't have the testing," said Berrera.Smith said she isn't overly concerned about the virus."Our concerns are, should be on par with any normal flu season, and we should take the necessary precautions, but I think we are going to see more cases, obviously, as we have more tests," said Smith.The district implemented phase 1 of its reopening on October 13th. Since that time, there have been more than 4,000 appointments for in-person learning across 106 schools. According to Superintendent Cindy Marten, there have been zero documented outbreaks of COVID-19 and zero documented cases of transmission on campus.San Diego Unified is California's second-largest school district.
