LOS ANGELES (CNS) - County public health officials said have ordered the continued closure of LA Apparel's manufacturing facilities in South Los Angeles, announcing that more than 300 workers have been confirmed with the coronavirus and four have died.The company's manufacturing complex on 59th Street was originally closed June 27 after inspectors found "flagrant" violations of infection- control protocols and the company "failed to cooperate" with the county's investigation of what were then about 150 total infections.According to the county Department of Public Health, an official order was issued Thursday mandating the "continuous closure" of the facility.Officials with LA Apparel could not be reached for comment Friday when county officials announced the extended closure."The death of four dedicated garment workers is heartbreaking and tragic," public health director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. "Business owners and operators have a corporate, moral and social responsibility to their employees and their families to provide a safe work environment that adheres to all of the health officer directives -- this responsibility is important, now more than ever, as we continue to fight this deadly virus."Public health officials said Friday three workers from the plant died in early June, and one more died this month. The agency began investigating conditions at the plant on June 19 after being notified by a "concerned health care provider."According to the department, investigators asked the company for a list of all employees so it could be compared with testing results, but the company failed to provide it.In late June, inspectors found violations at the facility of distancing requirements and infection-control protocols, according to the department, noting that the company was using cardboard as a barrier between workers.On July 4, the company sent the department an "incomplete list" of employees, and by then 198 positive cases had been reported. But as of Friday, that number had risen to more than 300, according to the public health agency.Health officials said that despite the company being ordered closed in late June, LA Apparel reopened the factory with new employees, and company officials tried to prevent health inspectors from entering the facility. 2309

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A vigil held Wednesday for a bicyclist killed at an intersection in South Los Angeles on Tuesday became the scene of another hit-and-run crash that injured a pedestrian."The driver of a tan-colored Honda Accord drove through the vigil at the intersection of Manchester and Normandie avenues shortly after 1 p.m.," Los Angeles police Officer Tony Im said.The video from the scene captured the sedan striking the pedestrian, who is then flung into the air, appearing to hit his head on the car windshield and finally landing on the asphalt.RELATED: GOOD SAMARITAN HIT WHILE HELPING MOTORISTAfter rolling to his feet, he hopped over to the sidewalk on one foot, seemingly injuring his right leg. He then collapsed onto the sidewalk where onlookers came to his aid.As the suspected hit-and-run motorist drove off, a group from the dozens of bicyclists taking part in the vigil attempted to follow the vehicle, including people running after the driver.During the vigil, "some rocks and bottles were thrown toward responding officers and a patrol vehicle, but no officers were injured and no arrests were made," Im said.Police were able to eventually clear the intersection. A department SUV can be seen having its rear window smashed.According to the LAPD's South Traffic Division, the bicyclist killed Tuesday was a man in his early 20s, who was struck by a white Porsche Cayenne SUV. The victim was identified in news reports as 22-year-old Frederick Frazier."The driver of the SUV that hit the young man was heading east on Manchester when the collision occurred. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The number of homeless people counted across Los Angeles County jumped 12% over the past year to nearly 59,000, with more young and old people and families on the streets, officials said Tuesday.The majority of the homeless people were found within the city of Los Angeles, which saw a 16% increase to 36,300, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority said while presenting January's annual count to the county Board of Supervisors.The previous tally found a slight decrease in the homeless population.Two years ago, voters passed a tax hike and housing bond to make massive investments to help solve the homeless crisis.Officials said Tuesday the same people have not remained on the streets.The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, a county agency, said it helped 21,631 people move into permanent housing during 2018 — a pace that could rapidly end homelessness if economic pressures had not pushed thousands more into the streets.About a quarter of the people became homeless for the first time in the past year, and about half of those cited economic hardship as the primary cause, the authority said.To catch up, cities need to overcome resistance to the placement of housing and shelters, officials said.Supervisor Janice Hahn called the numbers "disheartening.""Even though our data shows we are housing more people than ever, it is hard to be optimistic when that progress is overwhelmed by the number of people falling into homelessness," Hahn said.The Los Angeles County numbers mirror similar point-in-time tallies across California, as state officials struggle to address a lack of affordable housing.
