SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second person has died and three children remain hospitalized after a fire tore through a Logan Heights home Sunday morning. The family’s oldest son told 10News his mother and father, who he identified as Nicolasa Mayo and Jose Romero, were killed in the fire. His two younger sisters and brother remain in the hospital following the blaze. The 26-year-old says he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man tells 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home. "My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.The fire started around 4:30 Sunday morning on the 3100 block of Clay Street. "The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm. The curtain was open and I looked across the neighbors house was just bursting in flames," said Maria Orona, who lives nearby. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out. One witness who was nearby when the fire started told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through bars in the windows, unable to escape.At least three fire engines and dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze.At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire, but the metro arson strike team was called to the home to investigate.A GoFundMe has been set up for the family to help cover funeral expenses. 1541

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A surfer was found unconscious, face down in the water near Pacific Beach early Wednesday.San Diego lifeguards were notified of the woman in her 30's just after 8 a.m. inside the surf zone at Tourmaline Surf Park.10News spoke to Jason Glover, a paddleboard surfer who set up a robot-camera on the beach to capture surf videos. One of the clips captured the audio of the exact moment bystanders found the woman unconscious.“Hey! Hey! Call 9-1-1,” they said. Fellow surfers immediately pulled her out of the water and started CPR. Lifeguards continued life-saving efforts once they arrived, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Mu?oz.The woman began breathing again and was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital, but her condition was not immediately known.“They immediately brought her in. But that’s what surfers do. Whenever there’s a crew out here, you know you’re going to be fine because everyone looks after each other,” Glover said.It's unclear what caused the woman to become unconscious. 1042

His wife and 5-year-old daughter were waiting for him in the nearby food court."The urinals were taken so I went into the stall," said Gonzalez. Gonzalez went inside the stall at the far end."I'm finishing up my business, and I see a cell phone pop out of the stall next to me and pop back like that," said Gonzalez.He says the phone slid against the back wall just enough for the camera lens to be visible."Wow, did that actually happen?" said Gonzalez. Gonzalez' confusion quickly gave way to action."I was angry and felt violated," said Gonzalez. He told another man to get mall security before turning his attention to the stall."When you looked at the stall, he had it blocked with paper towels. You couldn't see in, top to bottom. Kicked the door a little and told him to get out," said Gonzalez.Gonzalez says the man that emerged was in his early 20s, about 5'10", 175 lbs, with curly, light brown hair. Gonzalez told him what he saw and the man denied it all."I was pushing him back, holding him in place so he couldn't leave," said Gonzalez.The shoving moved into the hallway, before the man slipped away and raced off. Gonzalez says what makes his skin crawl the most is the paper towel setup, which may mean the man had been in there awhile, taking photos. "The scariest thing is probably what if there were kids in there. You can put photos and videos online. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Sheriff's Department employee has been removed from duty after reportedly sharing a vulgar image.Although 10News hasn't seen the image, it was described as a vulgar image depicting George Floyd. The department says the image was shared electronically and was brought to the attention of leaders by a member of the department. The employee hasn't been identified."We were so disgusted that an employee may have shared such a vulgar image that we took immediate action," the department said in a statement to 10News.The department says the employee was removed from their official duties and had their peace officer authority removed."The Sheriff's Department does not tolerate any acts or actions by its employees that are a detriment to our core values. We also cannot comment on an active investigation because of Penal Code 832.7," the department added.An internal affairs investigation is underway, the department says. 962

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After seven years of demanding that their death and disability benefits be restored, San Diego City Firefighters finally had their voices heard after the City Council voted unanimously to bring the benefits back.The council made the decision less than five minutes after the firefighters arrived at City Hall and was met with a standing ovation.The benefits were eliminated after the passing of Proposition B, so all firefighters hired after 2012, about 350, never received them."All other firefighters across the state and most across the country have a defined death-and-disability if killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty, they have a pension, and they have pay parity," said Jesse Connor, president of the firefighters union.The benefits provide city employees injured in the line of duty and unable to continue work 50 percent of their base salary until death. For those killed in the line of duty, the money would go to their spouse.After lengthy back and forth talks between the city's firefighters union and the city's labor negotiators, an agreement was made.But, in that time, the union says it had trouble with recruitment and retention, leading to countless hours of overtime as firefighters continued to serve the community every day and hour of the week.Now, they say they are feeling thankful that all firefighters will have equal benefits."It's amazing," said 17-year veteran of the city's fire department, Tony Tosca. "The word 'unity' comes to mind.
