It's been said that 2020 will be known as "The Death of The Working Mom" as many find it is not humanly possible to manage distance learning, a career, and life at home. A digital marketplace for working mothers aims to make sure that women remain in the workforce and stay supported.As a single mom of three, Chandra Sanders does it all. And all was fine until the pandemic. “Due to COVID-19, my most recent project that I accepted was in commercial and retail, and that industry was seriously impacted from COVID-19 and was the first to shut down. Due to that shutdown, my project was shut down along with my income,” Sanders said.She refused to be negative though. And while stressed and anxious about her income, she turned to the internet.“I found the Mom Project doing a regular Google search online,” Sanders recalls. When she found it, The Mom Project happened to be hiring for its own team. She landed a job and couldn't be happier. Chief Community Officer Colleen Curtis says The Mom Project has now served over 2,000 companies and connected thousands of moms with employment.“People are coming to the realization that this can’t be how it is for everyone, forever,” Curtis said.The Mom Project was born in 2016, by you guessed it, a mom. Who, while on maternity leave, read a statistic. It said that 43 percent of skilled women leave the workforce after becoming mothers. Founder Allison Robinson didn't want moms like her to choose between a career and a family. Four years later and the digital marketplace is seeing change.“We’ve seen an incredible response from both sides of what I would say the marketplace, as a mom, we knew that the pain point was there for moms and it was really that we were feeling the tensions between being a great mom and being great at work but what we’re seeing is the incredible demand from companies,” Curtis said.When we asked what challenges women face now, as they navigate through the pandemic, Curtis says The Mom Project is noticing some tough things. “It's been disproportionately difficult for moms, specifically moms of color, but also, just moms. The emotional labor of adapting to new situations: work from home, kids are now home, all the way from babies to college kids, and your village has been stripped away,” Curtis said.Chandra Sanders says part of her new role at The Mom Project is to help other moms. Specifically, to help moms of color find and achieve her same success.“I must say it's the first job that I’ve had that I’ve felt welcome as a mom, as a woman, I didn’t have to hide that and as woman of color I didn’t have to hide that either,” Sanders said.Sanders says her former roles in commercial and retail industry were challenging. "Being a Black woman in an industry where I’m the only Black woman you have to be very careful about what you say, how you dress, the tone of voice that you’re using and you have to be careful about everything that you do,” Sanders said.Now she's on a mission to both change the workforce and pave the way for others.“Many companies now have these initiatives, want to hire a diverse workforce they really want that- their human resource departments are in charge of reaching out to the mom project and to candidates to ensure their workforce is diverse.”And she says, she's been there. Laid off, struggling as a single mom. She wants others to know, focusing on the good and the positive will help propel you forward.“I can do it, and I did it and we’re going to make sure other people can do it too,” Sanders said. In what is normally quiet Cajun country, the sound of shoveling sand rises above all else right now.“Just filling a few sandbags to make sure that we get any water intrusion through the doorways of house,” said Joe Soudelier, who was filling 28 sandbags in Morgan City, Louisiana.In this region of the state known as Acadiana, there are worries about water coming in courtesy of Hurricane Laura.There are many shrimp trawlers visible along the Louisiana coast. About an hour west of Morgan City, people in Iberia Parish, and in other nearby parishes make a living off the water. Now, though, the water that supports their livelihood is a potential threat to their lives.Storm surge along the Louisiana coast could be more than 10 feet in spots. Coupled with strong winds, they are dual concerns with Hurricane Laura.Still, many here won’t evacuate, like Shannon Zeringue, who lives in a trailer.“It’s been there for like 30 years,” she said. “Kind of sunk in the ground. So, I think I'll be okay.”There are shelters open for residents, but Zeringue worries about exposure to the coronavirus. She is counting on sandbags for protection and said she regrets the last time she evacuated.“One year we left and we spent all kind of money going and doing everything and it was like - it was just a waste of money,” Zeringue said. “We could’ve just stayed. And makes it hard for people who don't have money like that to try to evacuate.”Really, though, it is about people taking care of each other in this area where Cajun bonds are strong.“People help each other out every time there's a situation like this,” said resident Al Richard. “And they all give a helping hand to everybody."That was something witnessed first hand, as Soudelier came over to help him.“Everybody helps clean up, pick up and get back to normalcy,” Richard said, “and then we appreciate each other after it’s all over.“It is an ending they are already looking forward to with Hurricane Laura. 1967

It was a scary situation. A motorist flagged down deputy Jeremie Nix on Wednesday, saying their 3-month-old child was not breathing. If not for Nix being at the right place at the right time, the baby named Kingston might not have survived. According to the Marion County, Florida Sheriff's Office, Nix performed "life-saving measures" on the child, such as chest compressions. After Kingston remained unresponsive, Nix took the child to a nearby hospital. Within minutes, doctors were able to treat Kingston. Doctors told the sheriff's department that Nix's swift actions saved the child's life. By Thursday, Kingston was out of the hospital and back home with his mother.  717

IOWA CITY, Iowa — A young child died due to complications from coronavirus in June, the first confirmed death of a minor in Iowa during the pandemic, the state health department belatedly announced Sunday evening.The Iowa Department of Public Health said the state medical examiner’s office concluded its case investigation Aug. 6 into the death of the child, who was under the age of 5. But the death wasn’t reported in the state’s statistics until Saturday, more than two weeks later.“The child’s death was publicly reported this weekend after ensuring the individual’s identity would remain protected and notifying the family,” the department said in a statement. “We have made every effort to protect the identity of this child, while the family grieves this devastating loss. Again, we send our sincerest condolences.”The department says the medical examiner performed a full range of testing to determine the cause of death and the child’s health history was taken into account.“Ultimately, COVID-19 was deemed the cause of death,” the statement said.The confirmation of the state’s first child death comes one day before dozens of school districts are prepared to begin the school year on Monday — a development that has many educators and parents already on edge.Iowa Gov.
