SAN DIEGO — San Diego is playing a pivotal role as a testing ground for the future border wall while the region prepares for President Trump’s visit Tuesday.WHY SAN DIEGO?The region, specifically Otay Mesa, was selected as a location for the eight prototypes because of site accessibility to construct and the ability to evaluate the wall as part of a larger, existing border infrastructure system, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Ralph DeSio.San Diego County’s value as a construction site was detailed in a presentation made by the Department of Homeland Security and obtained by NPR.CBP officers can compare the performance of the prototypes to underperforming existing materials in the same location, according to the document. The CBP allocated 9,000 to replace the primary fence and replace the secondary fence with a wall in the 2017 fiscal year.Despite the federal green light, the San Diego City Council formally opposed the project.The group voted to support Councilmember Georgette Gómez’s proposal to oppose the Border Wall Funding Act of 2017.In her resolution, Gómez cited a San Diego Association of Governments and Caltrans study on the economic impacts of border delays on the cross-border economy. The study found the effects of border crossing delays cost .2 billion in foregone gross output and more than 62,000 jobs in both the U.S. and Mexico economies in 2007."As a city that is invested in the binational economic development of our region, it is important to oppose the building of a wall and focus our resources in enhancing our border infrastructure to ease access of goods and people," Gómez wrote.“The border wall is a huge mistake for our region economically and environmentally. I am happy the City Council voted to pass my resolution. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 43-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday morning with serious injuries after the car he was riding in crashed into four parked cars on a Mountain View street, police said.It happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on South 40th Street just south of Imperial Avenue, San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims said.A 38-year-old man was driving a 2005 Honda Civic southbound on South 40th Street when the car drifted to the right for unknown reasons and struck four parked cars, Heims said.The 43-year-old man, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Honda, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a fractured neck, which was not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said.The Honda driver was uninjured and 31-year-old man in the back seat of the sedan had a complaint of pain to his leg, Heims said. 847

SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - A young man and woman who had been dating were found dead in the doorway of a home in the Lake Murray area of San Diego in what authorities said was a murder-suicide.Police received a call about 8 p.m. Tuesday of someone being shot in the 6300 block of Budlong Avenue.When officers arrived, they found 19-year-old Willow Singer and her ex-boyfriend 19-year-old Thomas Hayes with gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to Lt. Anthony Dupree of the San Diego Police Department. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 19-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of fatally shooting an acquaintance at a San Ysidro motel.Customs officers who recognized Jonathan Orduno of Chula Vista from a be-on-the-lookout bulletin took him into custody at the San Ysidro Point of Entry on Thursday night in connection with the death last week of 22-year-old Adrian Torres-Garcia, according to San Diego police.A housekeeper found Torres-Garcia dead in a rented room at a motel in the 100 block of Calle Primera shortly before noon March 18, homicide Lt. Matt Dobbs said. The victim, a South Bay native with no known permanent address, died of at least one gunshot to his upper body.RELATED: San Diego police investigate death of man at San Ysidro motelDobbs declined to disclose a suspected motive for the shooting or release details on what led investigators to identify Orduno as the alleged killer.
