It was not the graduation ceremony Sarahi Avalos thought she would experience when she started high school -- but this celebration it is one she and her fellow graduates have earned a thousand times over.“Unbelievable. I thought I’d never make it,” Avalos said.She is fighting cancer, and her treatments have been so intense that she was not able to attend class at school. Avalos had to finish her classes from Diamond Children’s Medical Center at Banner UMC.  Avalos is one of five teens honored in a ceremony inside the hospital Thursday. Other honorees included Maiya Harris, Garrett Nesbitt, Austin Thacker, and Christopher Tom. 646

It's no secret that this is a challenging time for many, and the insurance industry is reacting to the new world we're in as a result of COVID-19.They're implementing everything from rebates and refunds to new policies.As many aspects of life are different now, motorists are traveling less and getting in fewer accidents. Recent events have also caused an increased interest in life insurance.“More customers are considering life insurance (as) an opportunity for us to help them recover from the unexpected around COVID,” says Kristyn Cook, senior vice president of agency marketing at State Farm Insurance.Interest in life insurance is swelling across the nation and being noticed industry wide. The Insurance Information Institute helps people understand insurance and what it does.Insurance Information Institute director Janet Ruiz said COVID-19 got people thinking.“I think they’re concerned and thinking about mortality and illness in the world,” Ruiz said. “It’s always important to have life insurance but sometimes people are so busy, they’re not paying attention to these types of needs they have whereas right now they’re looking at their financial picture and thinking, ‘Hey, I should have life insurance for my family and make sure they’re taken care of if something happens to me.’”And she says they have more time to prepare for catastrophe.For State Farm, that's helping people navigate what could happen in your region."There are very real significant risks relative to wildfires in California or hurricanes in Florida, or storms in general,” Cook said. “One of the things we pride ourselves on not just helping people recover when something happens but how to help them think about risk mitigation on the front end.”Cook says State Farm's 19,000 agents across the country are talking to clients about how to protect your home. Things like taking inventory, reviewing what kind of coverage you have and what you can do to structurally to protect your home. These are things, that before COVID-19, people would push off for a later date.“People are home and they have more time sometimes to think about the what if scenarios and that intersects with our reach out by our agents to say how can we help you," Cook said.Another big change is automotive coverage. Auto insurance customers policy should check their policies and reach out to their agents. Companies are sending refunds or rebates to customers due to changing driving habits.“We call it good neighbor relief program,” Cook said. “Payment flexibility, options relative to providing relief, we announced a dividend, a return of value to customers to the tune of billion recognizing they are doing less driving and there are fewer accidents.”Some are beefing up homeowner and renter policies, again, thinking about things as they're home and reviewing their properties.“If there’s a water leak, they’ll detect it quickly and get it fixed and they’re not having as much theft because they’re around the house and so you don’t have the thieves coming in while you’re at work,” Ruiz said.She also said most agencies are allowing you to put off payments for a month or two if you need a financial break. State Farm realizes that looks different for every customer and their unique situation. 3275

It's hard to know what salaries will look like next year.Staffing firm Robert Half surveyed senior managers and found 72% of companies have maintained the same salary or slightly increased pay for new hires since the COVID-19 pandemic began.More than a third are more likely to negotiate compensation with candidates now versus a year ago.“That’s telling me that these positions that have been hard to fill, there is so many information technology security positions available, they're looking for data analysts data scientists,” said Paul McDonald, Senior Executive Director at Robert Half.Workers can also broaden their search outside their geographic area. More companies are willing to hire full-time remote workers.“It’s one thing to talk broadly about what the compensation desires are for you and your family or you,” said McDonald. “The other side is don’t go too far in that first conversation. The negotiation happens after you have an offer.”If the company won’t budge on pay, they may offer other benefits, like help paying for home internet, more paid time off, and opportunities to upskill.Robert Half says roles in IT security with the least amount of experience make just under 0,000 a year on average.The salary range can be adjusted by geography, along with advanced degrees and certifications.There are salaries for some 470 positions listed on RobertHalf.com. 1390

INDIANAPOLIS — It has been quite a journey for Kari Wegg.She had been working tirelessly as a NICU nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for more than 25 years when she found herself fighting for her own life with COVID-19 in that very same hospital.“It’s devastating. I never thought something like this could happen to me,” Wegg said. “It’s been so hard because I was healthy, and I thought if I ever got it, I would be fine.”Wegg first got sick in June and diagnosed with pneumonia. Then in July, she, her husband and two children tested positive for the coronavirus.“I do work in a hospital,” she said. “My husband also works in a hospital. It’s very possible we got it from the hospital.”Her family had mild symptoms and recovered quickly. However, Wegg did not.“It’s been since July since I’ve seen my boys., and I haven’t been able to hug them or love on them, and they miss me so much,” Wegg said.Wegg was put on a heart and lung bypass machine on Aug. 19. She says her doctors discussed removing care.“Their dad had to sit down and tell them their mother might die, and they’ve had to try and cope with that,” she said.But Wegg says her husband wouldn’t give up. Calls were made, and she was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago on Sept. 5 for a double lung transplant.Northwestern was the first hospital in the country to perform a double lung transplant on a COVID-19 paitnet, and Wegg was only the sixth such patient to undergo the surgery.“I am eternally grateful to the family of my donors,” Wegg said. “I don’t know anything about them or how they died but they gave me the gift of life.”Grateful to be alive, but devastated financially with non-stop medical bills, she suffers in her bed, while her fellow healthcare workers continue the fight. Wegg says she even has coworkers who have died of the virus.Wegg says she's praying that more people take the virus seriously."I’m hoping my message as a nurse who didn’t expect any of this can get out there and bring it home to people who don’t necessarily want to wear a mask or want to isolate themselves or quarantine," Wegg said.
