SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of people packed the stands at the Coronado High School football field Friday, for a celebration of life in honor of Justin Meek.The Coronado High School graduate was one of the 12 people killed at the Thousand Oaks shooting on Nov. 7.The 23-year-old is remembered as a hometown hero, as he died helping protect others from the gunman’s bullets.RELATED: Coronado native among victims of the Thousand Oaks bar shootingMeek moved to Thousand Oaks to attend California Lutheran University. He worked at the Borderline Bar and Grill. Though he often worked as a security guard, the night of the shooting, he and his sister were working as promoters for ‘College Night’ events. When the gunshots started, Justin began helping people get out of harm's way. He was shielding them from gunfire when he was shot and killed. His sister made it out of the bar. The Meek family released a written statement that described Justin’s strong interest in the safety of others since Sept. 11. After college, Meek's family said he wanted to join the Coast Guard and then go on to become a U.S. Marshall. Meek’s mother served in the Air Force, his father served in the Navy, and he too felt a strong call to service.“Justin was a genuine, kind, loving, caring, compassionate, hardworking, talented man and a friend to everyone he met,” the statement reads. “He was a loving son, protective brother, and hero to all.”There is a paddle out for Meek on Saturday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Friday morning, SANDAG’s board will decide how to spend 0 million throughout San Diego County between roads, public transportation and other projects. According to a budget released by SANDAG, most of the funds will go towards transportation, not roads. The move has some throughout the county concerned that not enough will go toward roads in need of repair. “I'm pragmatic about it and I do worry about the fact that these tend to suck up all of the money and leave nothing left for highways,” said El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells.The concern comes after SANDAG announced “5 Big Moves.” The project focuses on the future of public transportation. Read all five points of the plan below: Complete CorridorsThe backbone of a complete transportation system that leverages technology, pricing, and connectivity to repurpose how both highways and local roads are used and managed. Complete Corridors would increase safety, capacity, and efficiency; provide dedicated space for high-speed transit and other pooled services; manage demand in real-time; and maximize use of existing roadways. Local roads are designed and operated to equally accommodate all users, including transit, cars, bikes, pedestrians, and commercial vehicles. Features may include dynamically managed curb space, transit amenities, bike facilities, pedestrian refuges, or smart intersection systems. Smart intersection systems would improve safety for all modes through use of sensors and alerts to vehicles and individuals, and could give transit priority treatments that make transit faster and more reliable. Wireless charging at parking facilities, intersections, and/or roadways will support future induction charging for zero-emission vehicles. Complete Corridors will provide connections to the Mobility Hubs network and infrastructure to support use of shared, on-demand Flexible Fleets. Transit LeapA complete network of high-capacity, high-speed, and high-frequency transit services that incorporates new transit modes and improves existing services. New high-speed services could include grade separated or tunneled services that span long segments with limited stops connecting major destinations. Potential improvements to existing transit lines include double or triple tracking, higher frequencies, dedicated lanes, and signal priorities managed through Complete Corridors. These routes will connect to Mobility Hubs and provide travelers a true alternative for traveling to work, home, and major destinations as fast or faster than driving. Transit services will feature better integration with other services for limited transfers with better timed connections, offer more individualized transit services, and transition to electric or alternative fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Mobility HubsPlaces of connectivity where a variety of travel options come together to deliver a seamless travel experience in the heart of the communities where people live, work, and play. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Former Congressman Darrell Issa is standing behind a political ad that the San Diego chair of his own party has called highly inappropriate.The ad, running on local television, takes aim at Carl DeMaio, a key Issa opponent in the race to replace Duncan Hunter in California's 50th Congressional District. The campaign commercial presents itself as a retort to a recent DeMaio ad that questioned Issa's dedication to President Trump. Issa's ad turns that around. However, the attacks appear to get personal. The ad uses images of two news article headlines in The Hill and The Los Angeles Blade that describe DeMaio as "Gay." It also uses images of MS-13 gang members when talking about DeMaio's stance on a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants (DeMaio said in The Hill article that he supports a path for well-educated immigrants and those who came to the U.S. as children.)San Diego Republican Party Chair Tony Krvaric described the ad as highly inappropriate."We encourage all candidates to stick to the issues," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Explosions rang out Thursday and Friday at an ocean view La Jolla home where FBI agents served a search warrant. Agents were checking the house at 625 Wrelton Drive in an ongoing investigation when they came across “certain materials,” said FBI Special Agent Davene Butler. The County of San Diego Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT) and San Diego Fire-Rescue were contacted for help to detonate and dispose of unstable chemicals. The material could not be safely moved from the neighborhood, Butler said. On Thursday, people who live near the home were evacuated for their safety, according to the FBI. On Friday, they were told to shelter in place. The bomb squad detonated Perchloric Acid in the backyard around 1 p.m."The reason we're blowing them up is, if they are handled improperly, they can blow up on their own," said Robert Wise, of the Environmental Protection Agency. Federal search warrants show a man named Alex Jvirblis owned the home. Jvirblis passed away in August. He owned a materlal science company called Curtis Technology, giving him access to the chemicals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members of a DUI crash victim shared emotional stories about their loss at the driver’s sentencing hearing Friday. Lauren Freeman cried as statements were made about the Feb. 2018 crash in Ocean Beach. Prosecutors said Freeman drove the wrong way on a transition ramp between I-5 and I-8, crashing into Justin Callahan’s car. “I'm Justin's father, he is buried next to his sister who died in 2005. So I think that there's a rule somewhere that children aren't supposed to die before the parents,” said Callahan’s father. Callahan was headed home to Ocean Beach from his job in Chula Vista when he died. RELATED: DUI driver pleads guilty to 2018 wrong-way crash on I-5 rampDuring the hearing, Freeman gave a tearful apology, saying she would do anything to change what happened that night. She also said she hopes Callahan’s family can one day find it in their hearts to forgive her. Freeman pleaded guilty to several charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. She was originally charged with murder but that was dropped during a plea deal. As part of her agreement, Freeman will serve 11 years, eight months in prison. 1176
